Was watching the minn Ohio st game. The thing I kept seeing with minn was the qb continuing to look over to the side line so he could adjust the play call. Used almost entire play clock. Really reminded me of su the last two years.
I am hoping this year no matter who is in at qb that they can make the adjustments at the line quickly without constantly having to get the calls from the side line. Only way we will be able to go faster and keep defenses off balance.

Need a quarterback to do that.

That’s a standard college thing, not a negative reflection on the QBs.

I don't like the looking to the sideline thing, but I get why it's become the norm. You rush to the line, the coaches get to see the defense and signal the play, then you hopefully snap the ball before they make any changes.

This is common. There's pre snap calls, check with me's, slow, medium and fast tempo. Anything you can do to get the advantage on the defense. You want to get the right play against the look the defense is giving you. It doesnt guarantee success but it gives you more opportunities.

I expect for the Ohio game anyway, the SU offense will attempt to operate at a breakneck pace all game long. Hoping to see a ton of yardage, a ton of first downs and a ton of points.

It is go time for this offense. Let’s do it.

It’s so funny that you hear all
Of these coaches in the acc talk about how everyone has caught up and playing fast doesn’t help Syracuse anymore. When I think we can all agree they haven’t played fast the last two years. At least not consistently.

I think having every single starter on offense being in the system for their third year will allow them to crank it back up. Only exception is Bleich and Tucker and it’s their second season with the team. I expect pace and a “mutiple” type offense to come back and have some success early against Ohio!

Agree you want the best play call against a D. My issue is it should be the qb making those adjustments quickly at the line of scrimmage not always having to get the call from the sideline. Qb should be able to read D quickly and make adjustments at the college level.

Tempo will always be a problem for defenses. Its execution thats been the issue for SU. UCF and Boise st tempo was really fast last night. SU 2020 had to go slower because of all the deficiences we had. I expect tempo to pick back up tomorrow night.

Are you saying the QB shouldnt get the play call from the coaches? Im sure there's times when the QB is coached to know what to call against certain looks but most of the time the coaches make the calls based on what they see on the field. Im a little confused in what you are saying. Are you talking post snap when you say reading the defense?

That's what I'm hoping to see, too.

OU won't know what hit 'em, after last year's anemic offensive film.

Boise and UCF played at breakneck speed last night. Faster than we ever have.

Every tempo offense does it, just not all of the time. Look at Baylor when they were racking up crazy yards and points. They did it too. It depends on the opponent and situation and on how well the offense is executing.

Agreed. Tempo without execution (and discipline) = what we have seen over the past 2 seasons. There is the perception on the board that the "league has figured out the scheme, it's too easy to defend, the play calling sucks," whatever. The fact is we have been so incredibly dysfunctional on offense that defenses could easily limit the entire offense, control the LOS, and pummel the QB at will. Tempo didn't matter (made it worse). The scheme didn't matter.

I'm hoping we see a return to true tempo because it will have layered significance. 1. Is the impact on the defense. 2. Maybe even more importantly IMO, it will speak volumes about player development, coaching, communication, discipline, and culture.

Absolutely spot on. Good stuff.

They ran 59 plays a game last year. They did not run their offense 16, 17, 18 they averaged 80 plays a game, in 19 it was about 75
