OK, I am hosting an office Christmas party at my house at the same time the SU-NC State game is on. Obviously this presents a dilemma about watching the game while everyone (30-40 maybe) are packed in my house. So, do I:

a) Forget the game and watch it later
b) Since everyone knows I'm a Cuse fan, turn it on during the party in background
c) Sneak upstairs and watch it live and come back down during timeouts and halftime
d) Blow the party and head to the sports bar to watch in peace
e) None of the above, your idea instead

Let's see...not sure what possibilities are within e). D) will probably get me divorced and in big trouble with the office gang. C) is possible, but can't push my luck too many times sneaking. B) is looking good but it's not very Christmas-y and maybe makes me look a little like Scrooge. I guess a) is the answer which I knew all along, although d) is tempting! LOL

I think I can speak for most guys. I've never arrived at a party and was disappointed when sports were on the TV.

I think you'll be okay. Put it on mute, crank some Christmas tunes, and let sports fans enjoy a game.

Yeah, I love Christmas, but I can't tell you one time where I thought "Awww man, I wish we could turn off this sporting event because it really takes away from the spirit." To me it only makes it better. Don't over think it. The people who don't want to watch, won't.

You could play it off as "oh look, the #1 team is on, I guess I'll just leave this game on for general sports fans."

The reality is, for me, I'd rather just DVR and watch later vs. trying to get snippets here and there plus knowing the outcome before really being able to absorb into the game. I'm sure you'll wind up with A.

Now the problem is: and you know it will happen, some jack-hole at the party - who you sacrificed watching the game for - will be peppering you with scores and/or the outcome from his iPhone the whole night. Especially if they are down or lose. This will piss you off mightily and jack-hole guy (who of course doesn't have a specific team of his own) will never be on the same footing the office ever again. But he will probably not ever realize that or why.

It's gotta be on in the background. No one will mind especially if they know you're a 'Cuse fans. And I agree with Houston, smart phones are the devil when it comes to attempting to DVR. I can't even go without checking my own phone if I'm missing a game.

Simple choice ... wife/party or SU-NC St. game. Easy. Go to the sports bar. Come on, getyour priorities straight!

Freaking pull out all your TV's from around the house. Decorate it up for and SU Christmas. Place them around the freaking house. Rent or borrow some more. Put the game on every TV. Throw out some SU T's to your guests and do it up! Brats, sides, steaks, shrimp etc... Convert them to the Orange side. Share with them the, "TRUTH". I'm just saying.

Personally, I would tape it and watch it later. I can't stand watching sports in a crowded setting with a lot of distractions. I like to focus on the game, and without the sound you end up with a lot of "what the heck was that!?" moments. And playing host to a house full of people, you are bound to miss some crucial plays.

But maybe that's just me.

I would probably have it on mute in the background. You will undoubtedly miss lots of the game due to the party. So I would tape it as well, and watch again if you feel you missed half the game.

Put the game on in the background and set out a dozen pyramid-shaped piles of cocaine and employ several prosties to work the party. You'll get to watch the game uninterrupted by your annoying co workers and they will all have the night of their lives.

Very funny Tristy...sounds like a plan! And yes Houston, there's always a jack-hole in the crowd.

I gotta ask why you scheduled an office party at the same time as the game, unless you just forgot to look at the schedule first.

Change the start time to the party to 8:00. Watch the game. As people start to show up game should be almost over. Every one is happy.. Then drink like a fish and forget things you did.. Will not be fun the next day but I bet you have fun getting to that point... :-/

Each year I get together with a bunch of the guys in my high school graduating class. We were in a restaurant/bar the night of the Florida game two weeks ago and I made a point to DVR the game. Luckily, when I got to the restaurant, my seat faced the bar and the game was on one of the TVs. Of course I couldn't hear it but I was able to keep track of the progress of the game. Since we won, it made watching it the next morning that much more enjoyable. My vote for you is to put it on in the background without the sound and keep the Christmas music blasting.

That was my thought as well. Bad scheduling on your part. The whole "I didnt realize there was a game that night" is frankly amateurish. It's your house right? Freaking put the game on. End of discussion. My wife would kick me in the nuts if I didnt put the game on party or no party.

My dilema is worse. Daughter is performing at the Civic Center at 7:00 tomorrow night and seeing the game is on at 6:30 I'm prettty much 'ed. Needless to say the phone will be on checking updates.

One counterexample: the Sunday before Christmas 2001; the Georgia Tech game was on in the background at our neighborhood Christmas party. It was, in fact, not very Christmas-y and I did become Scrooge.

But that does seem like the best option; shouldn't be too much of a problem unless we play badly and swearing/pouting/yelling/divorcing ensues.

I got invited to a surprise 40th bday party for my wifes best friend the night of the SU-Maine hoops game in 2009. Terrible game and it was the one where we led 60-12 at halftime. Well I wasn't happy we were going to this party (for the record neither was my wife) but it was one of those things we had to do.

Anyways the TV was not on and would not have been turned on until I made my way into the family room and commandeered the remote. I then said "hey I think Syracuse is playing tonight, right?" 30 minutes later I was high fiving guys I had never met after Wes made a one handed dunk on an alley-oop.

Put it on...and they will come.

You get to see your co-workers 260+ days per year, you get to see SU basketball games, what, 40 games per year. Obvious choice is obvious.

Well I knew there was a game on. Was shooting to have it on the 10th but the Mrs. said there was too much other stuff going on then so couldn't do it. Sounds like your wife is into Cuse more than mine (not doing my job well). Fortunately, my son and daughter will both be home from college and I trained them well...they are Cuse fans, so we can gang up and have the game on. Don't want to tick off wife too much, I may pay for it later (hint hint). Maybe I'll stay up all night watching the reply in peace. Good luck with your daughter.

You sound like a good husband and father. For god sakes, put the game on tho.

I was just busting your chops. She will eventually forgive you. At least you have the kids brainwashed so you did your job as a parent well. I would have to think that most every guy that will be attending your house will be saying to themselves "I hope he has the game on."

And yes my wife is a rabid sports fan. One of the first questions I asked when I met her. She could have been wanted for murder in 6 states and I was more interested in her sports knowledge.

Honestly bro? Option B is the only option you have. You can even turn on Christmas music, turn the TV on mute, and keep the game on. Chances are a good amount of partygoers will want to watch the game also. No shame there. Have a good party!

Option C is the only choice. Background watching sucks.

Just be really loud when you're at the party, tell a funny story or two before the game and then run upstairs. It's the Costanza philosophy - leave them wanting more. You can return at halftime, tell another funy or two, and get back upstairs ASAP.

You're already giving these people access to your home, they can live with limited access to you.

Put the game on and tape for it for later as well. As stated prior you'll likely find out the score regardless so may as well try and catch a glimpse when you can.

If anyone gives you about it being a Christmas party, simply point out that Syracuse has a player named Christmas at PF.

Yup. Always DVR it even when its on at the party. You'll miss a ton of plays by "hosting"
