Curious to see how the OL graded out. I have a gut feeling that they will feel the need to keep servais at center, which will hurt because he’s better off at tackle. I don’t think heckel is very good and 99 for liberty was kicking the interior guys asses for most of the game.

I just watched midway through 1st qtr
Pass protection wasn’t bad
We had littke rushing yards in 1st qtr
You can re watch on espn plus I’m boarding plane will watch it when I get home

B-/C+. Didn't just dominate but didn't give up many sacks, TFLs. Decent protection, Decent Run blocking. Had changes mid game. Heckel looked too light and tired but we know what he gives us.
Room for improvement. Next game.

Need Heckel healthy. Went out when he got hurt. Also, although the OL got a little better as the game went along, I didn’t like the blocking on short downs. Zero ability to get any push. Don’t know how many times we had 2 or 3 yards to go and we didn’t get it. That’s concerning.

Looking over the breakdown of runs we ran manly ran to the middle and right.
Left 7 att 13 yards 1.85 avg
Middle 21 att 110 yards 5.23 avg
Right 16 att 69 yards 4.31 avg

Run game really picked up after the 1st quarter and our bread and butter was the trap play up the middle with a mix of a few sweep/pitch to the right and little attempts to the left side.
Pass protect was solid for most of the game.
Penalties where good until towards the end of the game picked up some holding calls late.

I would give them a B- grade overall manly on the back avg of 4.4 per carry ;).

I thought our inside runs were bad due to lack of push. Too many 2nd or 3rd and 2-3 and we got stuffed. The yardage up the middle is deceiving because of moe’s 42 yarder late in the game.

A good bit of our outsides did get pushed inside where help was waiting and we did not get much out of them, we did have some success late running to the right just off tackle.
Yeah Moe's one run up the middle really helped the yardage does make it look better taking it out drops the yards per carry up the middle down to 3.45 avg.
The first two drives also really hurt the running game going 3 att 2 yards and a sack for -5.

Important to remember than the most improvement is from game 1 to game 2. I think particularly so with new units and both lines.

I suspect that Liberty is better than people think. They are going to beat a team they shouldn't.

I’m one of those people. I don’t think they are very good at all. They wouldn’t beat an ACC team unless they pulled an upset vs GT. Other than the big WR I don’t think they have a player that would start for us. We were our own worst enemy yesterday.

I give them a C.. i dont think the issue was a push I think it was confusion on who to block. Dino even said as much in his presser.

I think the 2-3 skill guys for liberty had more twitch than any of ours.

Eh, coaches say things. It’s in tape. Mano a Mano we weren’t getting any push.

Agree. Maybe they were a little more amped up than normal, but people would probably be wise to ignore their scores the rest of the year. It will probably depress you and really won’t be all that meaningful in the grand scheme.

We have a lot to improve on. New faces need more time to gel.

If they had a quarterback they might have made it a game. They had a good rb as well.

At any rate we will find out soon enough.

but when we zone block we really dont try to get push and that probably cause some issues on the goal line.

Some of the comments I've seen about not being able to get any push on lesser competition, not opening holes etc. sound exactly like what people were saying after the w. michigan game last year, fast forward to November and we're running all over Wake and BC. Its going to take a few games for these guys to gel.

People say “push” but we zone block - opening holes to create lanes for the RB.

Yes we zone block, but we still need to knock people backwards. I don’t buy the we didn’t have tape on them when it comes to 3rd and 2. They way they defended the long passes sure, but there’s only so many stunts you can do in the trenches. They just seemed to stand up our blockers on short yardage runs up the middle which seemed like we ran 25 times.

Actually two separate things. In zone blocking the OL is less concerned with “driving” the opponent backwards, instead is more focused on not allowing penetration into the backfield.

Instead of driving the man down the field, the OL is responsible for different areas or “zones” so to speak. In fact, you will almost see the OL turn perpendicular to the play, to seal off their man, opening seams.

It’s very effective in the running game, however, it is far different than what most kids running HS. It will take some time for this OL to gel, as they need a lot of communication and understating of different fronts thrown at them.

That’s why we had a bit of trouble initially in the run game against Liberty - they prepared for entirely different looks and fronts.

most of the plays that Liberty shut down were because we blocked the wrong people..

Well those wrong people stood our lineman on their heads too often.

Somewhat off topic, but is anyone else surprised Qadir White literally hasn’t played or let alone traveled ? For such a highly touted recruit I’m borderline shocked he’s not making an impact on this OL...

Makes me question the validity of NYC 4 stars... Like Wayne Morgan question...

Yepp, in an RPO, where the OL has to keep within 3 yards, should the QB read pass.. (ZBS usually sideways). Noticed many times the OL would push/stop, push/stop, push/stop, to stay within 3 yards. If Def maintains position, it plays into def gap control.

Do I want Man/Power? Absolutely - on some calls.. But that RPO/ZBS scheme lets us take advantage in the pass game. Sometimes you can't have it both ways.

Saw it a little different. Heckel had some bull rushes he slowed down, let 1 through for a sack. Also had 3 pancakes in the first 2 series. None of us know the calls, but there is often 1 guard help, or even 2 to get the middle.

Not having film here certainly didn't help in preparation for line calls. That's really important.
