OL Grade

Need Heckel healthy. Went out when he got hurt. Also, although the OL got a little better as the game went along, I didn’t like the blocking on short downs. Zero ability to get any push. Don’t know how many times we had 2 or 3 yards to go and we didn’t get it. That’s concerning.

That's what worried me last year after the WMU game but ED had to run to hide those flaws...thus I was worried he wouldn't last the year if that kept up.

Is it possible everyone knows every run is up the middle thus clogged? That being said, I'm sure Babers/Lynch have more options in store for Maryland regarding spreading the D more.

Also, as the other teams D tires I think the OL push gets stronger and stronger as they are in better shape. Early in games it seems a lot tougher to do as the D is fresher.

Actually two separate things. In zone blocking the OL is less concerned with “driving” the opponent backwards, instead is more focused on not allowing penetration into the backfield.

Instead of driving the man down the field, the OL is responsible for different areas or “zones” so to speak. In fact, you will almost see the OL turn perpendicular to the play, to seal off their man, opening seams.

It’s very effective in the running game, however, it is far different than what most kids running HS. It will take some time for this OL to gel, as they need a lot of communication and understating of different fronts thrown at them.

That’s why we had a bit of trouble initially in the run game against Liberty - they prepared for entirely different looks and fronts.

Two early sacks were the only negative yardage plays all game

I think we are going to see a ton of swing passes to the backs this year. All three have good hands are are good in space.

Somewhat off topic, but is anyone else surprised Qadir White literally hasn’t played or let alone traveled ? For such a highly touted recruit I’m borderline shocked he’s not making an impact on this OL...
Not really. I never understood those who think owning our state is essential to success. Marrone was right in that NY kids don't play enough.

Dino places so much on his linemen being able to play fast and not slow the O down which i understand if we play fast. Against Liberty we didn't and that advantage was lost.

Anything about Q specifically or just because he's a NY kid?
