Ollie just lost it

I actually don't think it was a foul. If anything the uconn player initiated contact.

The ville player jumped up to block the shot, and he was not gonna hit the uconn guy. The uconn player then stuck his ass out where the ville player was gonna land, forcing the ville player to hit him.

On the surface it looked like every other play where a 3 pt shooter gets a guy in the air and is legitimately fouled, but in this case I don't think so.
Don't think it matters. It's a foul.

I don't want to start a thread over this, but I hate it when people complain when others get angry over referees. That's just what fans do and I think most of us know that calls even out but in the moment we aren't exactly objective. (Except for the Michigan and OSU games, the referees killed us in both)

Storrs fans take it to another level. It's really funny reading the conspiracy theories over there.

This isn't fans complaining they are fine to do that, this is the coaches reaction that is being discussed and almost all agree it was a missed call. I can't reward my kids for throwing tantrums even if they are correct because its the wrong way to go about anything. Granted the Ref was very quick on T number 2 and should have tried to walk away after T #1 IMO but still you cannot do what Ollie did and not get at least 1 T.

Yup. And, we don't know exactly what he said. It could have been very T-worthy.

I don't know the rule on that for sure, but I don't see how it's different than a defender sliding under a guy who's already in the air, and trying to draw a charge.

Very true and what was said could have been why the 2nd T came so quickly. The bottom line is that Ollie lost his composure thus the thread title. I've seen plenty of Coach's get upset, argue and pursue the refs but usually there is some measure of control of plan to get a T fire up the team and move on. I had the distinct impression that Ollie was seriously out of control and melting down.

It has been a point of emphasis this year to not reward the shooter for jumping into the defender. I thought on that one it was a foul because even in his standard form he would have gotten hit. I so see what you are talking about and there was a great example latter in the game where Hancock pumped and jumped into the defender while flinging up a crazy one. The refs correctly called nothing.

On what planet was that not a foul? He was completely in the right.
No doubt it was a foul but it occurred on the floor before attempting a shot. The Uconn player actually took one dribble before lunging into the L'ville player.

Ollie is a young coach and he overreacted. Hopefully, he learns nothing from the experience and continues act like an idiot on the sidelines. Having lived in CT for 7 years, I mean this from the bottom of my heart...

JB would have gone ballistic if that had happened to Trevor or CJ. He most certainly would have drawn a T, but probably not the second.

The post game presser would have been EPIC, though.

Young JB would have gotten tossed!

Lets be real. Knight threw chairs on the court. It wasn't thattt big of a deal. I actually liked how he reacted. If you watched the game you could tell how big of a missed call that was.

Ollies youth and running at the official is what got it. It was a foul but I have seen much more obvious on shot fake lean in 3s. As for being a big call... the ville already re established control. Ollie made a rookie coach mistake. The call was not pivotal until it resulted in 4 free throws and no more ollie.

Whether the call was right or wrong is not the point. Ollie going haywire is. He would tell his players to walk away from arguing a call and he should have or an assistant should have pulled him away.
Bottom line is, you don't show up an official. That's an automatic T that should then shut your mouth.

If storrs wants conspiracy and officiating blunders that matter... try the marquette call the ncaa admitted was wrong, the ohio st abomination in the elite 8 and the late game michigan calls in the ff last year. It happens on a much bigger stage in much more obvious form without double techs. Oh and we have more beef in that regard too. We deserve a break for once when it matters.

Somebody gets it. :)

Ollie won't be there in 3 years.

Good point. The "rule of thumb" there, if you will, is that a player in the air must be given a place to land, and if you didn't have position on him before he left the ground, you cannot have it after. The UConn player initiated the contact, taking away the defender's landing place while he was in the air, so the decision rests on whether a disadvantage was created. And if yes, then by whom?

And just as a comment, if the Louisville player had closed out the shooter the right way - as every coach he's ever had has tried to teach him - instead of hurling himself wildly into the air in a ridiculously JV attempt to block a shot, none of this happens.

Same. For a long time, I've suggested that officials be made available for questions immediately after the game, just as players and coaches are required to do so. I'd like to hear their explanations/excuses for the multiple horrid blown calls every game.

Anyone see what happened last night in the NHL in the DET/LA game? Brutal...

I don't understand how, with 4 officials on the ice (at least one of whom seems always in the way) and with video replay capability, how they missed that. Supposedly every goal is reviewed, but one announcer last night claimed it was "not reviewable" which doesn't seem to make sense.

It'd be one thing if puck had barely gone out of play, but it looked to be a good 15-20 feet over the glass and into the netting.

The year after the NHL (in a lame and transparent attempt to justify Hull's "No Goal" in the '99 SCF) stated that all post-season goals were reviewed, John LeClair shot the puck through the side of the net against the Sabres in the 1st round of the playoffs. Goal counted.

Yes, if not even higher, LOL! According to the rulebook, the ref is supposed to blow the whistle when he "loses sight of the puck." That obviously didn't happen.

Hah, I was being conservative,

I didn't have a rooting interest in the game, but I'd hate if that goal (which resulted in an extra 2 points for the Wings, and 1 "lost" point for LAK) had any impact on playoff seedlings or qualifications.

Apparently that same ref had a fan ejected last night too lol.

Someone might not have thick enough skin to be officiating a basketball game.

Horrible non-call. He's right to be upset, but you cannot do what he did (scream, run out of the coaching box, etc.) and not expect to get T'd up.

And, is it just me, or does Ollie seem to constantly be in need of a stool softener?

He always looks like he's on the verge of crying on the sideline. Bad call and understandable meltdown by Ollie (particularly in light of frustration over team's struggles), his over the top reaction deserved a tech but seemed dumb of the ref to overreact even more by throwing him out instead of defusing the situation. The ref showed himself up even more on that bad call by throwing him out. Now millions will see his bad call in constant replays because the ref escalated an already bad situation. No winner here.
