OOC: Villanova adds 12th game

From the article:
They open on Aug. 29 at FBS Syracuse, the first meeting with the Orange since 1975.

Raise your hand if you remember Bill Hurley's Fumble?

Villanova was a team we should've defeated easily...they had a few good athletes but were really about on the Ivy League level. We did come from behind and beat them by a TD though t avoid an embarrassing loss. The 1975 team was frustrating...I think they were really close to winning 7-8 games. That would have given them a bowl. We had to wait until 1979 to break the streak. IIRC, we had BillyPreston and Otis Wilson at LB. Both NFL players.

A link to look at the records back in Maloney's tenure

That was a good team. Coach Maloney put together a pretty good defense that season that keep us in a lot of games.

The LB you are remembering was named Ray Preston, who had a nice career with the Chargers. His son was a fine football player who shunned us. Billy Preston was still going around in circles, playing an excellent keyboard. I think Lindy Hess was Preston's main running mate at LB in those days. Larry King was a solid DB and I think Ken Clarke was our best DT. He would go on to play for the Eagles.

Hurley was a promising frosh RB who fumbled returning a kickoff in the Penn State game at a time when we had a realistic chance to beat them. He would make up for that later in his career, at a different position...
