Orangeyes ...Sad news

Wow, terrible news. Thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family. My sincerest condolences.

My wife can't understand why I am a bit teary eyed hearing this news about someone I never met in person. That's Dan though, he always treated everyone like a dear friend. I'd get a pm following a random line in a post and Dan and I would talk back and forth for a while, like old friends.

Turns out we grew up on the same street in Syracuse, years apart however.

I always considered it an honor when Dan liked one of my posts, even more so now.

RIP Dan, you'll be missed brother.

War Damn Orangeyes.

It is with great sorrow to inform everyone that Orangeyes (Dan Johnson) passed away last night after a valiant months long fight. There was not a bigger SU fan than Dan. Not just football and mens basketball, but also Lax, womens basketball, womens softball etc.

He will truly be missed by a lot of people, not just this fan community but by the many other friends he had made and of course his family and relatives. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers and keep Dan in your hearts.

We will post details of the arrangements when we know them.

God bless you Dan, we'll miss you.

To read about all he was going through the past several months, and yet to see him posting articles and participating on this site, truly was inspirational.

Sincerest condolences to his family. I hope they take a tiny bit of solace in knowing how much enjoyment he brought to thousands of strangers here.

God bless ya, Dan.

Thanks for the news Rick. Incredibly sad. Although Dan and I only met once, we traded many messages through the years and especially immediately prior to his hospitalization. He knew that for me, he was the board. I am saddened beyond words.

This alumnus and fan will be affixing some combination of OE and DJ to the shirts I wear on game days this year and urge all who knew Dan to do the same.

My deepest sympathy to Dan's family. Somewhere in heaven, Ernie Davis is showing Dan around and helping him get settled.

As always you said it the best. God rest Dan's soul.

A very sad day for Orange Nation. Dan was a patient of mine several years ago when I was working at Crouse. When I found out he was Orangeyes, we struck up a conversation about all things SU sports and talked until my supervisor insisted I tend to others. I dare say I have never in my life met a more passionate supporter of Syracuse sports. Best wishes to his family.

What a legacy. One man, through his incredible fandom, has touched so many lives and become such a fixture that he not only receives, but unquestionably deserves to be spoken of in reverential tones. The outpouring of love not just here, from largely people who were never lucky enough to meet the man in person (I'll always deeply regret not getting that chance), but also from the Syracuse athletics community and media, is just incredible.

I can only imagine how proud OrangeOnions and his family must be of Dan. I can only offer my most sincere condolences, but it's pretty clear this was a life exceptionally lived.

Son of a gun. I have been gone all day and come home to this. I feel so depressed right now. I really thought he was on his way to recovery and would be back here posting articles soon.

RIP Dan you are going to be sorely missed.

I'm sure I share the same feelings as everyone else. Brutal news.

I will say when I stumbled upon whatever iteration of this site some 10-12 years ago; this one user in particular put us all to shame. He had the enthusiasm of the biggest ten year old fan with the perspective of a savvy vet. Throughout the meltdown losses, blowouts, national championships, bickering about politics or "coach ___ must go" this guy stayed above it all.

He was better than most if not all of us in that regard and in most regards. When I logged in this morning i was confused, it didn't make sense... Still doesn't.

But if we get something out of this, it's to enjoy every game, every moment discussing what we all love and to be enthusiastic.

With that said...
