Whenever this thread pops up I feel genuinely sad for Oshae. Such a great kid and he does some great things on the court. He should 100% be on a roster right now. I hope something works out for him soon.

Are we sure the agent gave him bad advice? (it could certainly be the agent though)
Perhaps they advised Oshae to take the money, and Oshae decided to bet on himself in FA.

Its tough when a player like Oshae goes to FA, because teams are not going to risk tampering by back channeling info for a fringe player like Brissett. And he tends to get the leftovers... you have to be the lucky one that gets beyond the vet minimum, as most teams are over the cap and use up their exemptions.

Whether it was the agent, Oshae or both, an unfortunate call. There are certainly different tiers of life changing money, but having $1 to $1.5m less after taxes can certainly alter your life a fair bit.

I have to wonder if there was more to this situation behind the scenes? I get betting on yourself, wanting a better opportunity, and all that, but you would think his agent had to know at least a little bit if his client had a market?

Pre-NIL, we knew college guys got bags through back channels. Does it happen in the pros? Like are there situations where a team will pay a player indirectly maybe sometime in the future to NOT take his player option?

In this case, a team like the Celtics would be motivated to do that if paying Oshae to not take his player option benefits them in significant luxury tax savings. May seem unlikely, but I find it hard to believe that NBA teams operate completely within the rules all the time.

The salary cap, and the fact that almost every team is above the cap line causes issues in terms of what teams are willing to promise the agents of fringe player. Capped teams are limited in terms of what they have to offer FA's... they have an exemption or two to sign FA's above the vet min, but they tend to give those to rotation level players, not more end of bench guys like Oshae. And now because of the hard cap, a handful of teams don't even have those exemptions to offer anymore, which puts the squeeze just a bit more tight on veteran end of bench guys.

Teams certainly backchannel info. But front offices want to retain their credibility with agents and don't want to make false promises to them especially on lesser players.

As a fringe player, you hope to get a little raise from the team you are on. Or hope to get a portion of an exemption as a FA. But it doesn't always break your way - and teams aren't going to guarantee fringe players before the signing period.

The only case of back-channel money I remember hearing about was with Andre Kirilenko and the Nets. The owner was allegedly paying him through one of his Russian businesses. At that point in his career, Kirilenko didn't end up adding much. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I don't know of any other cases.

Sooo…he did the exact opposite of what he always says? I get wanting more playing time, but just baffled a fringe player would turn down a guaranteed year in the NBA. Hope he can grind his way back.

I will never understand how he went undrafted, fought his way into the NBA, became a fringe/bench player on a championship team and then turn down a guaranteed contract from them. I could understand if he was a fringe player who excelled when given an opportunity for a lot of minutes due to a rotation player being out (ie: Jordan Poole). He had some good moments when he came off the bench but nothing exceptional to make him believe that he could be a highly regarded free agent.

In his first G league game he played 20 mins and had 8 pts, 9 rebs, 3 asts and 2 stls. The second game he played 26 mins and had 15 pts, 7 rebs and a steal.
