Just wondering
We kept our Mid Level Exception which gives us the money to sign a player like JJ Barea possibly, who we have reportedly offered a contract to. If we signed Chandler outright we would have lost that. This was a great move by the front office.
I read that by doing sign and trade with Dallas we retained our MLE which we wouldve lost otherwise. Dallas offered Chandler 1 yr/20 mil, once we offered our deal Dallas pulled back their deal and allowed the sign and trade. NBA cap rules are insane but this is what ive took from it lol.Is that true? How does that work? I have seen varying reports on the mid level; I've read that you lose it by going under the cap at any time in the "summer", which we would've done when we got Billups. But I'm not sure.
Mainly they did Dallas a favor, I think. Dallas gets a trade exception which they used to get Odom. Chandler could theoretically sign for more money with Dallas for the sign and trade as well, but I don't think he did?

@Knicks, rumor has it we are involved in a 3 way deal with ATL and Golden State that would package out Toney Douglas and bring Jamal Crawford back to NYK. What do you think? If Crawford is our sixth man I love it.
Well, were using the MLE $ to try and sign Barea. Who knows, all I know is we saved some kind of trade option that allows us 5 million dollars to sign someone else, I was under the assumption it was the MLE but maybe its not? It's so much to follow, but I'm not sure how we'd save the MLE on a sign and trade vs a FA. (And how could CHandler get $20 million? No one can get that in a single year).
Crawford is interesting, but if we moved Douglas, who is our PG? Barea, if we sign him? Man, Chandler is going to have to do a LOT of defensive work this year.
And of course, ESPN claims the Knicks LOST their MLE in the Chandler move. Who the hell knows.
I like TD, but i'll trade him for Jamal Crawford any day of the week. Against Boston with Amare injured, if Melo wasnt in the game we had ZERO offense. Jamal Crawford would not have been shut down like TD was. Also people talk about TD's defense, he was abused by Rondo in that series and thats putting it gently.I thought we still lost our mid-level exception b/c we were under the cap.
Would not like that trade. Douglas would be a nice complement to what the Knicks have with his defense and 3-point shooting

There is talk that the Clippers might be the next team to go for Paul. He has indicated in the past that they would be a team he would consider being traded. Also, if Chris Paul ends up playing the year out in New Orleans and enters the free agent market next year. The Knicks are still in play for him actually because of a new CBA rule. I don't understand the whole rule, and its more complicated than the stars taking a pay cut. Something like if a players salary takes up a certain % of the cap that player can take a % of his salary and cut it down to a certain number. And if Melo, Chandler, and Amare do that to a certain number (not sure what the number was), and if Paul comes in at not a max deal but slightly under the Knicks could actually fit him in. Considering Chandler, Paul, and Melo are "BFF's" according to reports, it wouldn't be shocking to see happen.
It's far fetched, I wouldn't bank on it. A lot has to happen for it to work, but its not impossible from a couple reports I read. I still think Paul ends up being traded at some point this year to a team he can "live with" playing for long-term. I would be surprised if Paul touches the free agent market.
Its not looking too good for TD in NY. Talks seem to be heating up between NY/ATL/GS which would bring Jamal Crawford back to NY for Douglas/Balkman/Walker.The Knicks had to move Turriaf before they could sign Chandler, so a trade was going to happen regardless between Washington and NY for Turriaf. When Chandler said he was signing with the Knicks it only makes sense for Dallas to do a sign-n-trade and get something in return. Even if its late draft picks, get something out of it. And if they can unload a few other bums they didn't want in the process all the better. Even if it means they get new bums. At worse they kick the tires on them and cut them. No harm no foul.
Douglas is the teams starting point guard. Bibby is now the backup. Douglas plays defense which is why he will start. With Douglas and Chandler now starting the Knicks defense is much much improved which has been the main goal this offseason. Improve on defense.
The starting 5 is now...
Chandler
Amare
Melo
Fields
Douglas
Not championship worthy but not awful. Should be no worse than a 4 or 5 seed in the East.

Theyre saying now that Douglas will not be included in a Jamal Crawford trade so no clue who theyre offering. Anyone who thinks our backcourt is fine is crazy. Jamal Crawford would be a huge upgrade over any guards we have.Sounds like an Isiah-type fantasy basketball move

Earlier in the day that was the rumor. It has since been squashed and so have trade talks for Crawford. I wouldnt mind packaging Fields for Crawford but it doesnt sound like anyone is interested in that.Tony Douglas is going nowhere. They aren't and won't trade him. Trust me. Whatever rumor you hear is a rumor that is not true. He is there only option at the point. Bibby isn't a starter anymore. Plus Douglas is the Knicks ONLY perimeter defender. They can't trade him

Well the Knicks went after JJ Barea. Offered the 2.5 mil exception reportedly. It's been squashed because the Knicks won't trade Douglas no matter what. Douglas is the starting PG for 2012, not up for debate.
yeah as a backup. Tony can also play the 2-guard spot and can slide over there at times when needed. The Knicks backcourt is a mess right now. Fields regressed last year as the season went on and Douglas is their only dependable guard player but he is coming off major shoulder surgery.Well the Knicks went after JJ Barea.
