OT-Burn it all down

Major college sports football and basketball are getting to be like the wild west. They've always been a wink wink here's the cash or car thing but being this being out in the open opens the door to many interesting directions including agents, IRS and what kinds of contracts they are to say the least.

I'm not against these guys getting this money and it's obvious some people have a heck of a lot of disposable income to pay this type of cash to spend it on a player. I'd hate to be a coach in these 2 sports.

To be honest, seeing the Top 25 filled with SEC and Big 10 schools is a bigger turnoff and the goofy bias voting system really makes college football a lot less enjoyable for me. I don't watch bowl games anymore, which I used to love watching no matter who played.

To me, the biggest issue for roster continuity isn’t NIL, it’s the unrestricted transfers.
The NCAA has lost any leverage they had in this area. They should have agreed that athletes were employees. They could have unionized and then all of these issues could have been collectively bargained.

Oh yeah, I haven't watched a non-Syracuse bowl game in forever. Used to love it, but now just don't care. Who is playing? Half the team sat out and 60% of the guys out there won't be on the team next year. FUN!

schools find 10 million of a player. All good, But you have to do it again in 2-3-4 yrs. What if he gets hurt. Do you have a backup that you spend 4-5 million on? How long before teams have a bigger budget than the NFL?

Jealousy will be a big factor also

Nobody cared when schools were wasting money on lazy rivers, other ridiculous amenities in locker rooms and football facilities. As soon as that money went directly to players instead of wasted on other things people started to care and cry outrage.

If we had the money to compete, people wouldn't care so much.

I do find it amusing though that people are willing to shell out big commitments to players who haven't stepped foot on a college campus. Imagine how much money Cecil Howard would have received for completing 18 passes his senior year.

We should offer the guy eleventy million dollars. There's nothing governing these contracts, so I'm sure you can get out of it if you had to.

Even this supreme court (Alston) admitted that paying college athletes is unpopular. The whole thing is a SS.

hate to say it but at some point something bad will happen.

money, religion and women. always.
What could possibly go wrong when you give a 18 year old young man 10 million dollars and he is big man on campus?

I there’s definitely been a massive change these last several years. That’s a lot to pay for an unproven commodity but it’s their money, not mine. The NCAA, conference commissioners, athletic directors, and university presidents had decades to put in place some sort of equitable system but they punted the problem down the line to maintain a status quo that disproportionately benefitted them until the courts struck them down. The blame falls solely at their feet. The players deserve to compensated for what they bring and there wasn’t a system for that until everything came crashing down, after those other parties fought so hard to prevent the players from reaping many of the benefits.

I do hate that the college football we knew and love is essentially dead but I’m hopeful that a new system will eventually emerge that is enjoyable. I can’t say that I’m confident that system will be perfect, or even great, but I’m hopeful it resembles some sense of decency and normalcy. When that occurs though is the question. It does feel like the current set-up is destined for a crash at some point so I am confident in that there will eventually be changes, but who knows when that will be. How it’s set up presently is predominantly at the expense of the consumer without much guaranteed return. I don’t know how viable that is if/when there is a negative shift in the economy. Fans are already feeling the hurt and it’s when the stock market is at record highs, inflation rate slowed (albeit right after a period of high inflation), and near full-employment. Does the NLI system function efficiently when everyone is pinching pennies? To be determined. But, I’ll hazard a guess and say no. Tickets aren’t cheap and fans are now directly footing the bill for the players. For the rich teams with massive fanbases, it could survive, but the rest will flounder. Someone needs to be working on an equitable system but there are too many greedy parties to where progress could be paralyzed. The SEC and Big Ten certainly aren’t helping the sport as a whole, they are more so focused on themselves. It’s an understandable mindset, but it’s not great for the long term health of the college game itself.

This is a little bit different, but I wouldn't be surprised if the headline greatly oversells what's going on here.

For example, it might be structured like this:

Year 1: 200k
Year 2: 300k
Year 3: 500k
Year 4: 9 Million

IF he doesn't leave for the draft before then, the school gets to decide before year 4 if they want to pay him 9 million or cut him from the team. Basically, these NIL contracts are likely non-guaranteed.

That's to say nothing of possible inflationary clauses like maybe 5 million of it is for winning the Heisman and the CFB playoff.

I'm not going to quibble with the amount that guys are being paid, it's more how they are being paid and the lack of basically any restrictions at all on how you're now able to operate within the system. The NCAA sucks, but there needs to be some sort of governing body with the ability to standardize how all of this is done. Perpetual free agency with blatant and unabashed tampering year in and year out does not make for a very enjoyable product from a fan perspective.

Only the schools can stop this. If they don't like it then admit the kids are employees, collectively bargain and pay them directly.

Disagree. Lazy Rivers for athletes was always stupid

I’m all for them getting all they can get, but I can pretty much guess how I would have handled things if I was given that type of money at that age.
Probably wouldn’t of ended well is what I’m guessing.

No, there's no reason to protect rich boosters from their money.
