Who has had the better career in their respective sport?

Tough to argue with Jeter's numbers, impact on the game, or the # of rings.

Jeter was the premier player for arguably the most recognizable franchise in sports. Numbers, rings, clean nose.

Jeter has been a slightly above avg SS for a winning team. if he had played with the Mets would we even be having this discussion?

No, because he would've broken his ankle four times and the Wilpons would probably stock the locker room with whatever he is allergic to.

Jeter. I am a Red Sox/Patriots fan. I respected 2 Yankees Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. I don't hate Peyton Manning, but never really respected him because the media loved him and until this year's AFC title game he really never scared me in a playoff game. I still remember crapping bricks in Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS when the Sox were clinging to a 2-1 lead and Jeter came up with the bases loaded and 2 outs. It was so scary and then Jeter laced that triple and cleared the bases and I thought the Sox were done, but obviously they came back.

I will miss Jeter he was classy understood the rivalry never disrespected anybody and was one of the catalysts of 5 WS winners. Peyton Manning is just this generation's Dan Marino with 1 SB win unlike Marino. Manning is an all-time great, but I won't miss the dude as an opponent like I will miss Jeter. Manning is a great player. but Jeter's greatness is higher IMO.

Yes, rings aside his numbers speak for themselves

But are you factoring in that Peyton has 5 MVPs to Marino's 1?

Jeter all day...the yankees may not have won every big game or series they played in his career, but i never recall him laying eggs in big moments in his career. You can't say that about Peyton. Peyton Manning is Brett Favre. There is no difference in their careers really.

gotta go with Peyton.

how many MVP's?? 5? 6?

hes got a title, been to 2 others.

Jeter has been awesome for sure, but as arod once so eloquently said..."Jeter has never had to lead. He can just go and play and have fun. He hits second — that's totally different than third or fourth in the lineup. You go into New York, you wanna stop Bernie [Williams] and Paul [O'Neill]. You never say, 'Don't let Derek beat us.' He's never your concern.”

theres a lot of truth in that insult.

love me some Jeter, but Mr Bounce into a Double Play, I mean, Mr Clutch...doesnt really have the killer numbers that Peyton puts up.

MVPs in football are a joke. Only QBs or RBs can win them. They are about who puts up the best stats not who is actually most valuable. Any decent QB with Denver's WR core last year would have put up ridiculous stats. Same with Brady in 2007.

Marino put up those fantasy numbers in a difficult era these days Brady/Manning/Rodgers/Brees are coddled like babies compared to Marino/Elway/Montana.

Jeter is the greaer player IMO and he never won a MVP. Jeter didn't pile up numbers he was just damn good and came thru in the clutch for his team and played the hardest every position in baseball for 5 WS members. Jeter is 5-2 in WS and Manning is 1-2 in Super Bowl.

Also, I think Jeter is one of the few players who I feel played cleaned unlike A-Roid in a very dirty ERA within MLB.

If we found out Peyton Manning used HGH to recover from his neck fusion I honestly wouldn't be surprised.

Brett Favre had great numbers too. Why doesn't anyone consider him close to being the best of all time?

good point.

for me, its because he often closed his eyes and chucked it.

if we are saying who the best QB of alltime is, then thats different...im going with Elway, but for this little timely exercise...Peyton wins over Jeter.

Don't let John Madden read what you wrote. Madden slurped Favre more than any player during his time as a broadcaster. Simms slurps Brady more than Manning, but does slurp both but not the Madden-Favre level.

Favre won 3 MVPs in a row, but that dude gambled more than Ben Affleck in Vegas. Manning is a great QB, but the rules protecting QBs and preventing DBs from touching WRs after 5 yards have inflated this QB generation's numbers. Manning has 5 MVPs 1 SB wins, Brady has 2 MVPs, 3 SB wins. Just like A-Rod 3 MVPS 1 WS, Jeter 0 MVP(however this Sox fan would concede Mauer or Morneau forget which one of them stole one MVP from Jeter) 5 WS titles.

Morneau

regardless if numbers. There was never a time that Jeter was considered even the best at his position for a single year.. Phil rizzuto won a ton of rings and was below avg but being a yankee he gets looked at differently.

Best Qb to me us still Unitas. Numbers dont tell everything but if Jeter had played on a bad team he wouldn't have lasted more than 5-7 years.

Jeter. I am a Red Sox/Patriots fan. I respected 2 Yankees Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.

I'm actually a Braves fan. Oddly enough I really can't stand any northeast professional teams except for the Bills. As much as I don't like the Yankees, I do like Jeter and Rivera. I actually thought Jeter was overrated for the first part of his career but he's to the points now when the numbers speak for themselves. I can't help but respect the guy and the way he has handled himself during his career.

Jeter never hit the HRs of your prototypical 3rd or 4th hitter, but always hit in the .300s played decent SS and was a clutch player. Jeter didn't put up the A-Rod power, but he was the better player for the Yankees.

Dustin Pedroia is Derek Jeter of the Red Sox right now. He isn't going to put up Robinson Cano numbers, but he hits .300, is clutch and is the leader of the Red Sox like Jeter was/is for the Yankees.

No, because he would've broken his ankle four times and the Wilpons would probably stock the locker room with whatever he is allergic to.

That assumes that the Mets didn't trade him after a 2 years for a third baseman who went bust. I lost track when the count went over 100 of who played for them there.

Jeter, no question. But I gotta admit I do like the Manning brothers SportsCenter commercial.

Jeter has 100% had a better career than Manning. MVP's mean nothing. Jeter has the rings. Manning chokes in the clutch.

It is a really hard comparison. Jeter is a great player, but he has never been considered the best in his sport. I would say Peyton.

Jeter. .312 career hitter. Mr clutch in playoffs. 4-5 gold gloves. Great great leader. 5 Rings. 3,000 hits.

First ballot HOFer.

As I mentioned above, I am hardly a Yankeees fan but this sums it up for me when you compare the two. I totally agree.

Derek Jeter has 3,339 hits, 528 doubles, 256 HRs, 5 silver sluggers(A-Rod, Nomar probably robbed him of more due to steroid usage)
Jeter is all-time leader in post-season hits with 200 with .308 average.

Yet because he never put up the HRs to win an MVP it makes Manning better. This is a very subjective question, but amount of MVPs is not how I would decide.
