OT: Hurricane Sandy

This storm seems to be up manhattan and the eastern coast. Holy crap.

The building across from my office fell down. Well, the front did (8th Ave?).

Power essentially out below 39th St in NYC.

38% of CT without any power...but most blame Pasqualoni and DeLeone for that..

This one? Stay safe. Be multiple

My brother is in lower Manhatten. Says everything below 42nd is out plus hot water was shut off where he is.

Just saw the entire east side lose power. A power plant exploded on the the FDR at 14th. I still have power at 37th on the west side, but it seems to be creeping up on us.

Brother just texted me that. He thinks this is worse in NYC than people thought it would be.

Much.

Much.

He's watching cars float down avenue C. Also said part of an apartment building collapsed in west village.

They are purposely shutting down power because of the encroachment of water in subways, underground utilities etc. My son lives a mile from there (rivington st) and the utility company called about an hour after his power went out (power went out about 9:15 or so) to say it was a purposeful act to shut down the power and you are right its going east to west.

This is a pic from the NYT from the building right next to mine. I basically have the same view of the city. The right side is south of about 40th. Still power north of that.

I live in jersey City (directly on the other side of the Hudson from lower Manhattan) and I'm really nervous to see what my city looks like in the AM. Around 730pm, the Hudson breeched the bulkhead and water poured in for hours (high tide was 845). I live about a 1/4 mile from the Water and everything is flooded all the way to here and beyond. Cars completely submerged. Crazy stuff. All you see is a darkened city with transformers blowing constantly and nonstop sirens in the distance. Very eerie. Tomorrow mornings high tide could be another punch to the gut I'm afraid.

from about :26 to 1:03, quite an explosion, going to take some time to repair the damage

How is everyone doing with the storm? All my family is in Cuse and some other realatives spred through New England.

basically if you lived in syracuse and didn't hear anything on the news - you would think it was just a typical late fall crappy day outside.

Well? How bad is it in JC?

We have seven trees down, power lines crushed on two sides and multiple houses with trees on them in the neighbor hood. Trapped on our street and 100% power outage in our town here in CNJ.

This turned out to be a very bad break for NYC and LI, but not so bad for those of us north of the Tappan Zee. Sun's been out most of the morning where I live. Intermittent breezes with gusts up to about 30 MPH. That's not much different than the winds were yesterday at the "peak" of the storm. Very little rain. Only a dozen our so homes in our town lost power and very little evidence of storm damage/debris. All-in-all this part of NYS (between Albany & Poughkeepsie east of the Hudson) has been through at least 3 or 4 storms worse than this in the past 12 months.

For those of you who are in the real storm zone I hope your friends and family are safe and I wish you a speedy recovery.
