OT: Jake Locker announces retirement from NFL

This should lock up Locker as one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history, even though there seems to be an awful lot of them lately. I'm not really surprised these athletic quarterback's, who dominated in HS, and college, seem to be busting at an alarming rate. Other then Russell Wilson, who also has an accurate, rifle for an arm, I can't think of any dual-threat quarterbacks that are having a successful NFL career.

At least Locker gets to head into retirement at 27, having earned closed to $20m in his 4 year career.

Locker never really lived up to his billing in college at Washington imho. But I admire him for not just cashing in the paychecks if his heart's not in it.

Anyone want to venture a guess whether or not the Titans number 2 draft pick will end up property of the Eagles for a bunch of draft picks?

Oddly enough, Locker was one of the best/better MLB up and comers and decided to stick with football in college. Even more odd is that Russell Wilson was, too.

A lot of NFL teams panicked in the first round that year. Locker, Gabbert, Ponder.

Dalton and Kaepernick were still around in the second.

What a great thread(s)

One of the few running jokes/themes that I've been around long enough to remember and one of my favorites. I can't wait until he makes a "comeback."

That was the NFL lockout year. So a lot of those teams weren't able to negotiate with free agents the way they normally would. There was an injunction that enabled the league to conduct the draft--and several teams actively sought to fill QB holes that they otherwise might have addressed via free agency. Hence why a team like Minnesota ends up reaching for a marginal Ponder in the first round.

Anybody who saw his tape against SU might have thought he was the best QB prospect in years.

He peaked really early.

Imagine if Flaherty, Giruzzi, Maljo were chasing him around in the NFL. He'd have to put the extra rings on his toes.

Many have made that mistake, too bad

I heard some guys trying to figure out why he wouldn't cash checks to hold a clipboard for a few more years.

He's 26, has banked 20m, and is one hit from becoming a vegetable. I applaud the guy for making a smart life choice rather than chasing a few more dollars.

he's taken some awful shots. good example of why nfl teams want pocket passers. it takes a long time for these guys to develop (especially locker, just wasn't a good passer anywhere) and they injure their brains and legs too much before they ever get where they need to be.

That's why I hate the mobile QB in the NFL... It takes so much time to learn the speed of the game and defensive tendencies/philosophies... When things break down in their early years and they're not sure what to do with the ball, their instinct is to run, this makes them vulnerable.

RGIII looked like he was going to be a game changer, Shanahan wrecked him. Hopefully he can come back.

But, I'll say this, if there's ever a QB as dynamic as Michael Vick, that get's it from a mental standpoint, offensively that team can own the league.

with college qb play getting better and better. maybe someday teams will be able to go to a disposable QB by committee approach the way they do with running backs. not anytime soon, i'm thinking 15 years from now.

I wish.

But it appears to me that Kelly and his OC, Pat Shumer, have decided to go with Bradford.

One thing about Bradford that surprised me - he's only 27.

Nick Foles is 26.

I think we saw him play his first game, right?

In the Dome?

He looked awfully good to me that night.

I think that was the night of the god awful all orange uniforms?

He was never a good quarterback. On paper he was a legend. On the field he was just a guy.
