OT: John Harbaugh, Sean Payton, Doug Marrone, others on Michigan's radar

How long a rope does Jimmy have Getting that kind of dough ? 1 year , 2 maybe. Good litmus test for people who think spending money on a big name buys you a winner.

He has free reign. The expectations are obviously high, but he's going to be off-leash. He has the buy-in of everyone associated with UofM from the current players to the former players, alumni, fans, etc. which is huge at Michigan and has not been present since Carr left.

I love that there are still some idiots that are sticking with the idea that he's going back to the NFL after weeks of blabbering about how he'd never leave the NFL to begin with.

I said during the season he would be UM's first choice and you were the one who scoffed to me that UM had problems with Harbaugh.
I love the hire for Michigan because he is going to troll the hell out of Urban Meyer and will drive Ohio State nuts.
However Michigan sold its soul to get Harbaugh 8 million a year and he will leave Michigan for the NFL probably within 4 years when the first appealing NFL job becomes available. Michigan can't play the academic snob card at the SEC anymore because this is an SEC move.

There was some bad blood with some things that Harbaugh said near the end of Carr's tenure. Fences had to be mended in early December once it became obvious what needed to be done.

Harbaugh's not going anywhere. I don't know him, but from what I've heard from people that have been spot on during this process, they think he'll retire at Michigan.

What does this have to do with the academic snob card? Michigan is still an elite university with a kickass aerospace program, this doesn't change that.

I'm just surprised that the Jets haven't entertained the idea of Harbaugh as head coach.

The academic snob card isn't directed at you. Michigan has just claimed they are above the fray when it comes to football. This move is an SEC move hiring Harbaugh I am not saying that is bad it's just Michigan is now Alabama.

If he is in it for the long haul Urban will get health problems by year 5.

That would be great but it won't happen. In any case, I despair that even a great coach could do something to improve the Jets. Pete Carroll couldn't do it, Parcells did get them to the AFC championship but retired shortly thereafter, and Belichek knew what hell it would be to coach the Jets and headed to New England.

Huh? He's an alum who commands a high salary. If Syracuse wanted to go hire Doug Marrone, if Marrone had the success level of Harbrough, would need to pay up as well. Would that make Syracuse Alabama? Further, I'd like if we were considered Alabama. God knows they probably have caught us in the academic rankings along with the likes of Penn St and Northeastern.

He will win from day 1, recruits will line up to play for him, and Michigan's "big time" national perception gets a major boost. It's already a major win for Michigan, no need for your litmus test.

The real litmus test, in the SU universe anyway, is whether the decision to promote a coach with ZERO head coaching experience sets the program back an additional 5-7 years.

They did. He wouldn't go there. He wants to stay on west coast OR go to Michigan his old school. He wouldn't entertain the idea of any east coast NFL jobs

Agree he will win early at Michigan. I think he only stays 2 years, 3 tops...but he will have that program winning overnight. Wouldn't be shocked to see him bring many NFL assistant coaches with him there as well which will also help them win early.

The Jets are the Jets. And that's why they'll always be the Jets. :( They do "Jet" things to stay that way.

He probably told them they had the wrong number...and they believed him. My team is horrible. I must live with the fact that the Ken O'Brien and Vinny Testaverde years will probably be the best we'll see for another decade or so.

Somebody better send a memo to OSU , MSU , PSU , Utah , Minnysota , Rutgers and the rest of the teams that they must bow down to the 50 million dollar man. Look for an exodus of upper classman as well.

lol wut? Anyways, good for Michigan - I really didn't think they'd pull this off. I hope this drives Franklin from Penn State and sends them back into a tailspin.

Personally, I do not want someone named as HC who has only 2 years of coordinator experience (Coughlin is back next year, IMO) to be my HC. Just because the offense has 'gotten better as the season has gone on' does not make someone Giants HC material. Will he ever be? Who knows? He may be the second coming of Vince Lombardi, but he is not being named HC after 2 years of coordinator experience.

As you say, I am very excited about next year - at least on offense. Defense? :noidea:
I think McAdoo will be, provided they have success next year and beyond. I believe that's the gameplan.

And for the rest of you, we've covered Marrone to the Giants before...never in a gazillion years will he come in as HC.

The New York Football Giants in 90 years of operation...have hired 2 HC's from outside the family. Back to back and defending SuperBowl Champion DC Bill Ansparger, which was about as much of a 'hot coach' as there could be...and Dan Reeves, who was recommended to Wellington over whiskeys and cigars by Tom Landry (Once a Giant, always a Giant).

Where Marrone could come in handy, is when McAdoo is in charge, and O79 here points this out...he's raw, so Marrone would be a good choice to be the asst HC and OC...but WITHOUT play calling responsabiltys.

Gonna need an adult in the room.

I believe he should be used to this arrangement.

he has to shoot that down, cant have anything hanging over TC or the team in general.

if they fail next year...Reese, TC and McAdoo are all gone, even if the offense is prolific.

but there is enough indication that if this works, they would want to keep this offense in place for the end of Eli's career.

You can't have HCIW in the NFL because of the Rooney rule. So even if McAdoo is the next NYG HC and I think he will be they will have to interview at least one minority candidate for the job to satisfy the Rooney rule or you lose draft picks etc.
