OT: Louisville Signs Adidas Deal for $160M/10 years

SU's contract with Nike is up in about a year I believe. Wildhack has stated past relationship with Nike will count for something but they will explore options. Hopefully they will link the increase in their next deal with the plan to pay for Dome renovation. Back of the napkin says a $5M increase together with the ACC Network money easily pays the debt service on a $250M renovation. The money will be there. Get a little State help and let's do it!

Cuse better get paid close to this from Nike or switch. Louisville generally sells more trademarked items so I suspect Cuse might get something lower but shouldn't be too far off.

Louisville has new $160M deal with Adidas, Tom Jurich tells boosters

Is Jurich the best A.D. in college sports? I've never done a deep dive, but his coaching hires (I know Pitino and Petrino are both creeps, but "those creeps can roll, man"), infrastructure improvements, overall athletic achievement (both in revenue and olympic sports), brand improvement, etc., seems second to none.

Jurich's personal brand has taken a hit thanks to the misgivings of Pitino (2x) and the hiring of Petrino. For those that disagree (and that's fine), let me ask, do you think that the Ole Miss AD still had Hugh Freeze's name on the top bullet of his resume? There is also talk that the Cards' 2013 MBB National Champ could be vacated.

He is up there in the Top 5 for sure. Louisville is similar to Syracuse in many ways but has the advantage of a larger Metro with more corporate sponsorship. The downside for Louisville is they share the Metro somewhat with UK.

+ his response to wakey leaks.

I don't know and think you make a fair point. Personally, i dont think anybody in their right mind would compare Hugh Freeze's coaching prowess to Petrino or Pitino. Don't forget Jurich also hired Charlie Strong (after the Kragthorpe disaster) when many of his peers appeared squeamish. I also don't think Ole Miss has upgraded it's athletics program the way Louisville has. Maybe Baylor is a better comparison?

I also agree with the statement that Mad made in the GT thread. What SU needs to do is win to gain some re$$$pect with Nike, UA, Adidas. Louisville has been hot lately in both men's BBall and Football.

Can anyone speculate what factors go into a deal like this? I would think that Syracuse is a more visible brand than Louisville and probably sells more merchandise, but I imagine recent winning tradition in the big two sports plays a part. Economic situation in the area? Stability/marketability of coaching staffs? What else?

And can anyone ballpark the current SU/Nike deal - is it even one-fourth as lucrative as Louisville's?

I thought that SU renegotiated its contract not that long ago (last year?)

EDIT: I might be thinking of media rights negotiations w/ IMG, and it may have been 2 yearsish ago.

In Albany Wildhack indicated it was coming up in the "near future".

As per a Forbes article referenced by the NIAM cite, SU averages approximately 3 million per year from Nike. This ranked 35th out of the 65 schools used in the comparison.

Speculating here, but I think SU will see a significant bump in that number. I have also wondered if somehow these negotiations could be tied to naming rights as part of the Dome renovation - but I openly admit I am way over my head here in knowing how any of that works.

Historically SU ranks about 30th in apparel sales which is pretty damn good for a private school. It does look like the market has trended higher so one would expect a solid bump. Would think Wildhack knows what's what.

Lately it seems like Adidas has been using Louavul as something of their show pony like Nike uses Orygun and UA uses the Twerps. While Louvul doesn't get a new uni to use in every quarter like the other two do, they seem to get more options than other Adidas schools like Wiscy, Nebraska, and NCSU. UCLA (Adidas' only non-red school before this week?) may get dialed up as well now that they've been on-board w/Adidas for a while.

There are some unis you just don't want to mess with. The powder blue with gold helmets is one of them.

Wisconsin and UCLA are now UA schools.

Agree. I believe that Adidas had UCLA in all-black w/powder blue numbers one game. :vomit:

But, "The recruits love black unis!!!!"

I'd be happy if SU could get $10-12M per year...throw that money straight into paying off the Dome Refurb.

Different budgets. A bake sale isn't going to pay for a Dome refurbish and Athletics rents the Dome from the University, doesn't own it.

This article gives some good insights into what Rutgers ran into when their arrangement with Nike expired.

They were at the bottom of all bcs schools in revenue, Nike didn't want to give them a raise and they really had no choice but to jump to Adidas.

But it looks like they got the same deal as UL and the shorter length means they will probably end up with more money over the 10 year period UL now has locked in.

Rutgers agrees to big-money Adidas apparel deal

Anyone have info on when our Nike contract is up? My sense from Wildhack was a year or so.

Interesting read, but the wording isn't very comfortable...maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it looks like the Rutgers deal is for $10 million over 6 years, not $10 million annually.

I read that as $10 million over six years too. So only about 1.7 million a year.
