OT - My dinner with President Obama

But ... how do you know that I have NOT had dinner with a President?

I would be kind of surprised if you had not dined with a president, as you have been known to be a charitable sort who would get invited to a dinner. I am not sure whether there were only four people though.

I shook hands and shared a few words with a President but there was no food involved.

One of my housemates from undergrad spent nearly 5 years interacting with Obama on almost a daily basis. Your account of his general persona matches what my friend says.

I shook hands with Clinton when I received my PhD at Syracuse commencent in 03, but unfortunately didn't get to speak with him.

Liar -- you just jumped the fence at 1600 PA didn't you? Just Kidding -- that's one of the greatest things that an American can do... dinner with the most powerful person in the world. That is UNREAL!!! You may have even one-upped CTO!

I don't have very much if any annual leave at work, so rather than ask and get denied I just banged in. If my chief clerk, whom I joke is not only devoid of human empathy, but also animal, vegetable and mineral empathy, gives me grief I will tell him indignantly that it would have been positively unpatriotic not to go!

Nycsugrad, stand up? Anything on YouTube? It's always been a dream of mine to do stand up... I'm a great public speaker, but I'm sure I'm the only one who thinks I'm funny

I got those emails about the dinner. I figured it would never happen to me. I think even a little part of me figured it would never come to fruition for anyone. So it is cool to know that it did. Very cool experience and you are right it will never be topped.

I used to get inundated by texts and emails from him. I finally had to call him and say - Barack - enough and questioned whether he could make better use of his time.

I don't have stand up on you tube as it's too easy to steal jokes from there, but look under Andrea Abrahams and you will find some examples of my acting work. Also a four part series called It's Still Me, which consists of four scenes from a feature length screenplay I wrote. I am in the first one, the fat loud mouthed Christine. There is also a 35 second montage of my headshots with curlers that the photographer kindly put together, and a rather long, maybe 9 minute one of acting scenes, the latter of which is a performance art piece I did when that was in vogue in the 90s. Also put something called Vagornaments in the search engine and watch it. It was written and directed by James Murray AKA Murr of impractical jokers fame. I only have one line but it's a good one! Thanks for asking.

Also if anyone wants to know the joke I would have told the president I will make an exception to my no jokes off stage rule.

A friend of mine danced with Chelsea Clinton when they were in high school. I was plucked out of a Clinton Gore rally as a 14 year old in New Haven six days before the 92 election to stand behind Tipper Gore while she spoke. The staffer who found me said I would meet her. Didn't get to.

I'm constantly amazed by the lives of the people on this board. I love reading about your lives and experiences so much more than I enjoy reading about zone versus man or George McDonald's playcalling. Thank you for sharing this story.

Do you live in or near NYC Cuse troop? My comedy guru, Eric Kornfeld, has started teaching again. He's a superb teacher who writes for Bette. Midler and Rosie odonnell among others. I'd recommend that anyone who dreams of doing stand up take a class and get on that stage in front of people at least once. Eric is the man to teach you how. His favorite thing to say to me all those years ago was "Nice concept. Now how about sticking a few fu#%ing jokes in?" Harsh? Maybe. But I learned how to write jokes WITH punch lines.

I got a postcard from Bill Clinton right after he was elected, asking me to give him a chance. Does that count?

Very cool NYC. Closest I can come is having breakfast with Walter Mondale in the mid 70's when he and Carter were running.

Great story. Where was the dinner held? I sent a few bucks to the ornithological lab at Cornell... and I didn't even get to meet a snowy owl.
That's what you get for donating money to folks who study insects (and spiders) ((and scorpions)).

Whether you agree or disagree with his politics, Obama certainly seems like a cool guy to be around. And I think you could say that about most Presidents - you can't get to that level without having a magnetic and dynamic personality.
Indeed.

Ornithology is the study of BIRDS! Entomology is the study of insects.

ANOTHER FEMALE ON THE BOARD- WOO HOO!!!!
Linda ... Andrea was here long before you were. She was one of the first folks here ... 14 or 15 years ago.

Yes you read that correctly. Yesterday I was privileged to spend about 45 minutes conversing with the President of the USA. How did this happen? I sent $5 to the DSCC and from25,000 entries was one of two winners. The president could not have been more down to earth or friendlier. He had brief bios of the four of us, asked us questions and answered ours. There were so many highlights it's hard to know where to begin, but one that stands out was his first night in NYC, when his sublet was unavailable and he couldn't reach a friend, and slept in the alley.

There are no selfies, but there was an official photographer, so at some point I should have pictures to share. I did get two or three hugs, as did the other women, and the man, a veteran, was handed a special commemorative coin. Suffice it to say it was the most outstanding day of my life and is unlikely to be topped.

I hope you nicely explained to him that this year he would be well advised to pick SU to go far in the tourney.

It is more that we are all females in hiding. Not that she is new or an older member to the board. I don't know who all of the members are. I don't know who is male and who is female, and was excited to realize another female fan!!!
