OT - Need a new place to go when in Syracuse

I love Delmonico's but then again I'm a steak lover. Last night they gave me a piece in excesses of 24 ounces.

The only problem I had was that GRob was across from me. They have a wall that has JB in the New Orleans hat, a 1959 NC Football, former HC's DM and P, John Desko along with Vice Lombardi and Joe Montana. They need to replace the last two with Ernie Davis and Cocah Ben and dump GRob for HCSS.

GRob is sitting on a train with a book in his hand that says "The Little Engine That Couildn't" I kid you not.

Blarney Stone has cheap wing night, J Ryans, Tusk, etc...most are listed.

I don't get The Retreat - seems lame. Only been a couple time but felt like a Cracker Barrel vibe with a bar.

I was thinking across the street from the Tusk. J Ryan's, PJ Dorsey's.

Now if someone had said the last place you heard Steely Dan, I would have known immediately.

PJ Dorsey's is now Small Plates.

Try the Flat Iron Grill in Liverpool. Just opened up in the old Colorado Mining Company location on Buckley Rd. It is very good and a great atmosphere.

Hm-m-m-m... When you are right, you are right, bro. Just cover your head from the flack that I'm sure you'll receive.

Never heard that before, I know some very fussy people and all they do is rave about the Retreat.

Go by there anytime and gage for yourself the parking lot is always full.

That place has been popular since the Regatta days

if you like Reuben's go to Danzer's. One of the best you will find. It's just off Brighton Ave.

Also some nice new restaurant's at Destiny

Danzers is a shadow of what they used to be. Avoid it.

Best Reuben in town is out at the Sherwood Inn in Skinny Atlas.

Um okay.

We have a new arena planned to go downtown...er wait, scratch that. Check out Sammy Malone's in Baldwinsville, great Roast Beef sandwiches.

Speaking of that roast beef sandwich, when does Clarks open?

There was an article several weeks ago where Ray Clark was asked that question. He said he would like to open a week or two before St. Paddy's Day. However, whenever I pass the proposed location, there never seems to be any evidence of activity --construction-wise-- inside or out. And these continuing rumors of opening dates have been going on for over a year now. So who knows?

I haven't been there in a long while. Was actually in the mode for it so was thinking about heading there. Thanks for the heads up

Alto Cinco on Wescott. Best spot in cuse hands down. Awesome burritos and craft beers. Just a little small (have they expanded yet into the old munjebs). Boom Boom mex mex is good Mexican as well but completely different vibe.

I've been to the retreat many many times and the food is ehh. Typical american dujour, nothing special. Not terrible but nothing that I crave when I come back into town (grew up in lpool). The outdoor for patio is really nice in the summer though.

Good call.

Danzer's is like something straight out of Restaurant Impossible or one of those shows. I still go (as recently as before the Clemson game on Sunday), but I wouldn't send someone who's never been before. Dirty, kind of careless service, and the food is hit-or-miss.

Good beer, everything else is DISGUSTING. As I come from Ithaca, we usually stop before or after hoop games to deink only, sometimes BOTH depending on the outcome. I like the bar but that place needs to makeover, updated menu, redo a lot of stuff. I wouldn't eat there. Use to be 1,000 times better 15-20 years ago

Alto Cinco has always been great

Just had lunch at the new Dino in Buffalo. Tully's is here, too. So now I need a new place to go when I'm in Syracuse. Suggestions appreciated.

Shifty's is the finest dive bar is Syracuse. Perhaps in the world. On Burnet Ave, a block east of Teall. Across from Dominick's.

Important that you get there before 5. Kathy works till then. Kathy is an amazing bartender. She handles a very busy bar alone. Fun, personable and extremely competent. About the best bartender personality I've seen. Makes everybody feel special.

They have a decent selection of craft beers on tap. Also several in bottles.

One more thing. The food is excellent. You might not expect it by the looks of the place. Very good daily specials and the pizza is fantastic.

Did I mention Kathy?

Danzers' Roast beef club and Hamlet are still good, in my recent experience.

Their German food is really bad. So is that New York Bakery brown bread that they (and a lot of sandwich places in CNY) pass off as rye. And everything needs a good cleaning. Including the deep fryers.

Thanks...it seems like it's taking a while to get that going, hope it's soon.

Ya gotta regatta. Didn't even know there was a boat race going on and people complain about the troughs at the Dome, those woods had some serious action going on!

Don't want to derail the thread...I like the Retreats Utica Greens. Danzers has gone down hill and I agree with Ottomets about the Hamlet which is still very good.

Good, reasonably priced beers, lots of live music and great wings. I love that place.

I am definitely not a "Foodie." I eat to live, not live to eat, if you know what I mean. And yes, as has been mentioned here, I have a personal connection with The Retreat. Beyond that, I like the place. It's comfortable, without pretense. The food is always good, but I don't think people would claim its a five star restaurant. I wouldn't know. I've never eaten at a five star restaurant. The prices are good. The menu is varied. The kitchen is open long hours, and the food comes out quickly. And yes, there are some who think the servers are on the gorgeous side.

The owner has built an incredible business from the late 70s when it was just a dive bar, to now having three seating areas -- a bar side area with loads of tvs; a more reserved area for more quiet dining; and a third area for parties, or more quiet dining. And then of course, there is the Patio during the summer with live music almost every night. I don't know of a better spot to have a few beers when it's nice out. But most of all, it's locally owned, and the owners work right on site. It's the kind of place I prefer to go when I go out to eat or to have a few beers.

But as has been said here, there are SO many great spots to eat in Syracuse. I'm sure everyone has their favorites. I do too. When We are not at The Retreat, if we go out for a nice meal, I love Kitty Hoynes, or the Inn Between, or The Brae Loch, or Coleman's. Some of the new places in the mall are good...though I will admit, most of my dining money will always go to locally owned establishments.

The restaurant business is a tough one. The good ones last.
