OT - Pacquiao v. Mayweather

AFN Broadcasted the fight for free over here. Fox completely butchered our National Anthem! That fight was exactly why boxing is dying. It wasn't even a fight, just a lot of running around the ring or holding as a defensive measure. was boring and unsatisfying as is most boxing.
I watch a lot of boxing. Unfortunately, Floyd and Klitschko are considered to be at the top, but, they are two of the least entertaining fighters out there. Watch Gennady Glolovkin (GGG), or Kovalev (light heavy), or Andre Ward, when he's healthy. Great fighters who get hit, but hit and win in exciting fights, on HBO or Showtime

I will admit I do not watch a lot of boxing, however for most of us out there we know boxing as a sport where top physical athletes compete to literally knock the other out. In this day of social media Pacquiao v. Mayweather promised all things that the younger generation has never had the opportunity to see, and that is two men going toe to toe, establishing dominance and showing the heart of warrior. This was the highest grossing title fight of all time! of ALL TIME! For younger semi-fans who want a reason to love the sport and even for the older generation who had the opportunity to see the great "Rocky - esque" fights of the past the stage was set to breath new life into boxing. Instead, once again, on the biggest stage, the largest grossing boxing event of all time the viewers as whole are left unsatisfied. It did nothing for the sport of boxing. Sure if I was a super fan I could say wow that was amazing technique and defense on display tonight. However most of the world are not super fans of boxing. Most of the world wants to see the definition of boxing, "the sport or practice of fighting with the fists, especially with padded gloves in a roped square ring according to prescribed rules" (Oxford Dictionary) Sadly that did not happen and unfortunately this is why the sport is dying. The two biggest names in boxing did not even live up to the definition of their sport...

just my thoughts and opinions...

Unfortunately, it didn't live up to expectations. Now come the reports of Manny fighting with an injured right shoulder. If I'm Mayweather and want to stay undefeated then I don't sign up for a rematch.

The best fighter last night (IIRC) was the tattooed Ukranian.

Hagler - Hearns it was not.

I agree with everything you said about him as a person.

From a boxing standpoint, the guy is the greatest fighter ever. His tactics defensively are unrivaled. Rarely gets hurt.
GOOD. LORD , ARE YOU SERIOUS. This fight went exactly as all 48 ,or whatever , of his previous have. The guy,for all his defensive talent, has been the biggest rip off artist in boxing history. And we are all SAPS for continuing to put money in this idiots pocket. His fights STINK! The buildup for this farce generated a moronic response from the general public who somehow thought this would be entertaining. The stupid walk to the ring with Jimmy Kimmel ,probably filming a piece for his show, and the Burger King guy looked like a Miley Cyrus concert. Pacquiau at least tried here and there to engage but Mayweather NEVER left his defensive stance. We are pathetic for buying this

You may be. I HAVE NEVER and WILL NEVER buy a pay per view event.
If you bought it, you got what you deserved.

I think it's kind of funny that The Onion tweeted out a picture of Mayweather's corner man swabbing his eye with a $100 bill, and now people are passing it around on social media acting like it's real.

Oh, The Onion. Tricking gullible people since 1988.

You sir need to read and study up on pugilism. Here's a good place to start - . After that, pick any one of the 25 of these.. http://www.amazon.com/25-Must-Have-Boxing-Books/lm/3PEB0C5J64259. I've read 6.

Pugilists are not gladiators. This isn't a fight until one is dead sport. If it were, it would have disbanded years ago. Just because the 80's-90's gave us the most entertaining pugilist in the history of the sport. Tyson was an enigma, however, he did not redefine the sport. You have to understand the true sport of boxing to be able to appreciate what actually transpired last night. If boxing was all about finding the next Tyson, MMA never would have risen to popularity. Truth.

Anyone who has followed the sport heavily over the last 30 years knew exactly what the fight was going to be last night. I went into it knowing that if the fight lasted 12 rounds, Mayweather would win. Mayweather is as intelligent a boxer as we've ever seen. He avoids the big punches and thus avoids taking a heavy amount of damage. As a counter puncher, he avoids the big blows and lands a few strong counters each round to earn him enough points to capture each round. At 38, it's extremely impressive he has remained as elusive as he has. There really is only one way to beat Mayweather and that is to knock him out/down early in the fight. Otherwise, he'll win more rounds than he loses. Thus, Pacquiao's only chance was to knock him down/out. He was not able to take Mayweather out of his fight.

I can understand your frustration. Last night's fight was hyped enormously. However, if what you're looking for is a sport resembling modern day gladiators, keep tuning into MMA. MMA is not boxing.

No, MMA is replacing boxing. At least for me. It is 10x more entertaining , and requires a higher skill level, too. I'd rather watch the full 26 mile marathon than pay for the absence of entertainment this fight brought. Yawn. Mark it...boxing as we know it now will go the way of the rotary phone.

Video killed the radio star. This fight drove a stake through it.

Definitely for me. One big reason are the undercards. Undercards on MMA events are very good, especially huge events. For such a huge event, experts slammed how horrible the undercard was for Mayweather vs Pacquiao

The fight was terribly boring. I feel bad for everyone who wasted their money.

Oh really? Was Hagler vs Hearns boxing? Was Frazier vs Ali boxing? Was Ray Robinson vs jake Lamotta boxing? It is a sin to MENTION Floyd Mayweathers name in the same Book as these great fighters. It was my hope that he was exposed last night as a glorified, wife beating, money stealing Saul Mamby. But I'm sure there'll be a load of people laying down money to fall asleep to his next fight.

GREAT FIGHT!!! If you like boring.

Who won? I fell asleep.

I would rather watch the old sat CBS boxing matinees from the 80's than what ever that boring MMA stuff is.

Then you never have watched MMA if you find it boring.

Wasn't even tempted to go to a sports bar. Most boring 'great' boxer ever.

Me? 'Boring' and 'great' are mutually exclusive. It was never the Sweet Science. It was a way out and a way up. Doesn't help that Mayweather is impossible to root for as a person.

I sure don't feel sorry for anyone who wasted their money, though. This was about as predictable a result as you could, um, predict.

How do you judge someone else's likes and dislikes?

ESPN does a great job with their boxing show and the new Premier Boxing events have had high quality fights too. MMA can be just as boring as some boxing matches. Nothing like watching a 5 round final and watch them spend 3 - 4 mins of each round trying to get an arm bar but essentially lay on each other most of that time. You can give me all the... technical and technique jargon you want but MMA contests suffer from some of the same lack of action, too much holding, etc that boxing does. The management of the two sports is drastically different but that still doesn't prevent more and more MMA events having a lot of boring fights.

Roy moved up to light heavyweight (by far the worst division in boxing because any light heavyweight worth his slat moves up to heavyweight where the money is ten times as much) and beat a bunch of losers.

Many hate Mayweather (for good reason) but he fought and beat everybody, and he's ten times the boxer Roy Jones ever was.

The casual boxing fan wants to see two guys stand still in the middle of the ring and hit each other, but that's not boxing. Any two cavemen can hit each other, the art and the science of boxing is making the other guy miss and Floyd Mayweather is the best ever at that.

IMO, Mayweather does not compare to the the greats in the past.He has made it a habit of picking and choosing who he fights and when he fights them. I can't think of a memorable fight involving Mayweather. As good as Manny is he is not a true welter weight and he suffered a devastating KO against Marquez. Can one imagine what would have happened if Mayweather fought someone with the punching power of Tommy Hearns, or move up in weight class like Sugar Ray did to fight Hagler instead of fighting a bunch of guys who weren't true welter weights.

I wish Mayweather had fought during some of boxing's glory years too, just to see what would have happened. We will never know, of course. You can certainly accuse Mayweather of only fighting on his own terms, but you can't accuse him of dodging anybody. He fought all the best of his era (what few there are) and beat them all convincingly.

I imagine if Mayweather fought someone like Sugar Ray or Hearns, it would look a lot like it did when he fought Alvarez who is bigger than Mayweather and is still undefeated against everyone who is not named Mayweather (Mayweather dominated Alvarez even worse than he dominated Pacquiao by the way).

This is all assuming Mayweather in his prime of course. The real difference between then and now is Mayweather couldn't have beaten the best at 38 like he can now. I suspect that Mayweather in his prime beats any boxer ever of comparable weight though.
