I’m just going to put this here because I know you’re all pet lovers, and it should be said.

As I said above, we lost our dog a few months back. We knew the time was coming. He had lost his hearing and a good share of his eyesight. But he was an incredibly resilient dog and somehow managed. I had to fish him out of the pool a couple times when he ventured too close, and in the final days he had to be carried anywhere he needed to go.

It took 13.5 years, but he had become my dog. When we first got him, it was because a family member couldn’t keep him. I would not have picked him as my dog. He was barely 2, but he had been raised by someone else. There was friction between the other family member and us, and taking the dog in became the event that bridged the gap and brought us back together. Everything is good now, but it was taking that little dog in that made it possible.

The dog was smart, but stubborn and he and I did not see eye to eye. It took a couple of years before he and I came to terms with each other. But eventually he accepted me and I him.

It broke my heart to sit with him in his last moments. He trusted me completely.

Pets are family. But in this case he was a pet who helped bring a family together. View attachment 226221
This story hits home. Sorry for your loss. I started this post showing my pugs. I also was in your situation with them leaving me. It was the most difficult decision, but the right one in our case, One had cancer and the other had another medical issue which could not be treated and she was suffering.

Here our my 3 Maltese boys in their Christmas sweaters after going thru their Christmas box and tearing off all the wrapping.
The one on the left is called Buddy Buckets (4) after Buddy Boeheim. My breeder was a friend of Juli Boeheim. Juli told her son about his name and he actually emailed me to tell me how honored he was. Such a nice thing to do.

Toby Bear (3) is in the middle and Billie Bo(12) is on the right.

In late October, we lost our beloved six year old kittie Griffy to an undetected heart birth defect. He became ill and eight days later he was gone. Our surviving cat, 14 year old Dewey, missed his buddy and playmate, became very lonely and was living in a funk. After three weeks, we started looking for a companion and playmate for Dewey. We looked for a small kitten so Dewey wouldn't feel threatened. My wife applied for 20 kittens on line and was denied, mostly because we lived too far away. It's not kitten season in the northeast winter. She finally found and applied for these two bonded kittens from a rescue group in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and got accepted. They were transported from Alabama and we picked them up two hours away from us (I84 exit in Fishkill, NY) on January 16. Ironically, this rescue group prefers to adopt in the northeast. That way there's zero chance they could end up in a high kill shelter in Alabama. Two sweethearts who are as cute as their picture. They love Dewey and Dewey loves them. We did not name them Roll and Tide. We opted for Brinkley and Buckley.

I have a similar story. I lost my beloved Maltese Gizmo to a rare brain infection about 4 years ago. One day he was fine playing with his buddy Billie Bo. 10 days later he died from this condition. Billie Bo grieved terribly and lost a third of his body weight - not a good thing for a seven pound dog.
It was literally a series of miracles/godwinks that led me to Buddy after trying for months to get a companion for Billie. Within 15 minutes of meeting each other, they were best friends.

So glad it worked finding some companionship for Dewey and that the new kitties and Dewey love each other and have each other. They are gorgeous by the way!

OK, you guys made me post these.

Here are my grand-meows.

Rocco

Rocco is a rescued tuxedo cat - a bit grumpy in his old age (12?), but thoroughly loved by my daughter.

And Frosty

Frosty is a rescued Siamese Seal Point, and quite the goofball. He belongs to my other daughter. His blue eyes are stunning.

With all the emotions surrounding this team, it is nice to pay tribute to those who keep us sane in some very frustrating sports moments.
My Buddy actually watches the games with me and seems to understand how to calm me down.
