OT: Syracuse.com ending comments

Syracuse.com, Give us your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to us, We lift our lamp beside the golden door!"

I'm not sure that's the kind of language that crowd will really understand.

As you can all imagine, this is a very emotional time for my colleagues and I. I'm not sure what we are going to do with all this extra time we used to spend reading "this is news?" comments. Please respect our privacy.
Remember the report and mute options on twitter are your friends.

My question is: where will I go for input from people who proudly announce they moved away from the Syracuse area but still have plenty to say about it?
Idk... there's still quite a few posters here that love to point out Syracuse's inadequacies in the locker room compared to Seattle.

But we'll have to use our real names.

People use their real names on facebook?

It seemed like the comment section was 90% wretched refuse.

I’m sure anyone who’s ever posted on the old syracuse.com forums around the turn of the century would agree this was an idea that’s about twenty years behind its time.

Voice of Accountability was a legend on there.

Matt Park with nice props for here.

What did he say? I tried to scroll through the comments to find it, but my brain started to hurt even scanning that nonsense.

I especially always enjoyed the “so what!! It’s winter!! Do you have to be so dramatic!??” responses to weather forecast articles.

Like, these people seemed legitimately angry and offended that the forecasted weather was being reported.

Oh no...he left the breadcrumbs. :(

ah, I remember my days long ago on the syracuse.com board, battling it out with a Neo Nazi on the sports board. such fond memories.

I disagree with ending comments. Some are good and some are pretty bad. For someone like myself that is not from the Syracuse region, getting additional perspective from locals is very helpful. From them restricting your access if you use an ad blocker to putting more content behind a paywall and now this, I'm good on the Post Standard.

It's an Advance Media decision, not a Syracuse.com one.

Cleveland.com and NJ.com are also ending their comments.

Advance Media decision or not, they've lost a reader.

It's a business, not a charity.

So you're going to stop reading articles because you can't see the social commentary by HughJass69 and FreedomGuy1776420?

If you don't subscribe to the site, I'll doubt they'll miss you.
In an age where there are 7 trillion media outlets and places to get content for free, charging to subscribe is IMO ridiculous.

The New York Times is only a dollar a week and that I believe is for paper and digital.

The folks at Advance Media are insane.

That's probably just for a new subscription. The WSJ has new deals like that and then it doubles in price when it renews.
