OT: Syracuse.com ending comments

So you're going to stop reading articles because you can't see the social commentary by HughJass69 and FreedomGuy1776420?

If you don't subscribe to the site, I'll doubt they'll miss you.

They charge 15 a month for subpar content. I bet they will miss someone when they have to go to those lengths to drive revenue. That tells me they're barely above water as is. I get my money's worth with the Financial Times, NYT, WSJ and The Athletic. Piss off.

The pop up I get says $5.

I have no reason to lie.

there are tons of ways to get the news these days.. but if you really care about local stuff you have the paper and then local tv news which will show about 5 stories a day..

if you chose the hundred other ways to get the info you get what you get and its rarely vetted or sourced.

I used to work in local TV news. TV news is so, so much less useful and impactful than written word journalism. Not exactly your point, but I think we're in the same line of thinking.

The comments were so laughable
No loss by banning comments over there

The fewer outlets that mouthbreathing morons have to run their mouths anonymously, the better.

To be honest, we were all pretty frustrated having to go to a subscription model. We were/are scared it won't work, but it's pretty clear there is no other path. There is no reasonable amount of page views we can generate that pay the bills that need to get paid. I pinky promise it's not enough.

My dad is an Iowa grad and hawkcentral.com (Des Moines Register and Iowa City Press Citizen) had to make the same decision a couple months ago. Personally I follow both Syracuse and Iowa closely enough that it's worth it to me, but it's unfortunate and will be interesting to see the results.

Except for this outlet of course! Absolutely no mouth breathers on here... ;)

Newspaper paywalls aren't really new. For several years I would try to read tweeted articles that would require me to subscribe to read online or I would be able to read just so many articles before the freebies were cut off. It's the going trend. Warren Buffet just sold off all his papers because, although a few were profitable, the rest weren't making a profit.

I should add “unmoderated”.

This place is moderated which weeds them out. Those Syracuse.com comments sections were a disgrace.
I knew that deep down you appreciated us. ;)

Ok, so that's your real reason for not visiting their site anymore. Don't float a ridiculous narrative that people aren't going to read the paper anymore because of the comments.

I saw $8 this morning. But your anger at a local media outlet that has to pay its people plus satisfy its corporate overlords is... odd.
They can do that with the ad revenue they get form the on sites ads. Which is what they were doing before along with revenue from actual physical paper subscribers.

That is how most free sites do it.

I subscribe to read all SU Sports and support the newspaper of my hometown community.
Disney Plus bundle or Netflix is cheaper than Syracuse.com, that should tell you something right there.

Overpriced and again, I can get similar content for free anywhere.

I disagree with regards to SU Sports. Mike Water and Donna are absolutely fantastic on the beat. Bailey/Mink are solid IMO. Again I'm from CNY so i take pride in supporting my newspaper of record.

Clearly there's not enough ad revenue, otherwise I'm pretty sure that's what they'd do.

You ruin everything for cuse10, you know that?

I was banned from commenting to articles there some time back. i was never told for what or why.

Syracuse.com pricing strategy is nuts.

I've seen $19.99, $14.99, $9.99, $7.99, $5.99 and $5.00 a month offered to me.

I finally signed up for $5.99 a month. Not worth the effort to me to save $12 a year to try to get $5.00 a month.

I'm not sure what they doing other than creating confusion for the public and problems for their customer service unit who field angry calls.

If you see a lower price offer. I suggest cancelling at the higher price and signing back up at the lower price.
