OT: Ten worst places to live in NYS

Well, Las Vegas is pretty much Clark County if you take out Henderson, but I doubt just Henderson being taken out gets Las Vegas students below 50%. I get it though, anything to make the city look better than it really is.

You are comparing a County with 8,000 SQ miles versus a city with 25 SQ miles. For a little perspective Clark County is 2 1/2 times bigger than the largest County in NY State.

Comparing city to city is the way you're doing it. How about county vs. county?

I would guess that Onondaga County closes toward that 71%.

You're not getting it...Syracuse the city is only 30% of Onondaga County. Your comparison is not a fair one.

I am getting it, what I'm saying is the Clark County school district is essentially composed of only the city of Las Vegas. There is really only one suburb.

I was just in Las Vegas two weeks ago and couldn't figure out why anyone would want to live there. Hotter than blazes, prostitutes, bums and drunks everywhere. When your redeeming quality is making money off of people gambling then I don't think there's much room to denigrate other cities that don't fit what you happen to like.

Wait...there's a serious comparison between Las Vegas and SYRACUSE?????
Really????

The unfortunate truth is Syracuse is becoming an ever increasing eyesore.
It appears the university wisely has bought up properties to try to create a fence to fend off encroaching urban blight.
The only reasons to go to Syracuse are home basketball games and Wegman's (and I admit those are two great reasons but Wegman's is expanding into other areas and most games are available on TV or online).

Syracuse?
It's not Camden (although Camden has gotten better now that they have police again).
But it is a depressing place.

And, by the way, that this supposed "scientific" ranking of NY locations is flawed is revealed by the fact that Rochester is ranked far worse than Syracuse. There is no comparison. Rochester is one of the best kept secrets in the Northeast.

Some of the same old cynicism. I'm not sure what some of you are seeing and I'm 30, but downtown Syracuse is getting better, not worse, at least in terms of jobs and businesses. I work for a large private company downtown making good money and we employ 400 people. There's been a lot of development throughout downtown the past 15 years, none of it public and there is more planned. This isn't the 1980's and 90's anymore. If you are educated in business, technology or science you can find well paying jobs here.
I think some of the cynics come from a time when manufacturing dominated this area, and that is no longer the case. The top business in Syracuse in the future are in the Service and Technology sectors.

And you are wrong. Las Vegas is 600,000. Clark County is 2 million. There are many incorporated cities and unincorporated cities in Clark County besides Henderson and Las Vegas.

Long Island is a fantastic place to live if you have family money and can go to the beach, hamptons, montauk and NYC at will. If not, you either struggle making a living on LI or spend your life commuting to a firm in Manhattan.

Considering the whole county is under one singular school district isn't as crazy as you're trying to make me sound.

But sure, it's a craphole here, probably the reason people are moving back in drones. If you really want to believe that Syracuse is such an excellent place to live, there is no way I'm going to be able to say anything without you defending it, which is fine. I've lived there for about 28 years in my life and many years in other places. I honestly look at it as a place that's dirty, boring, garbage weather, and the people are quite miserable. I'll take the sun, lower taxes, things to do, and friendly kind people around me everywhere any day of the week over mini-Detroit.

Hmmm...I was born and raised in the suburbs of Utica. I now live near Albany. I can't argue with Utica being on there, but I am shocked that Rome isn't on there. Has it improved?

I have a brother near Utica in Whitesboro. Agreed that Utica sucks, but man is the food good around that area!

I'm not glossing over anything, there isn't a "Las Vegas school district", there is only a Clark County School District. It's not my fault that they don't have multiple ones like they do in CNY.

I'm not attacking the city, I think it could be a great city, unfortunately local and state government will never allow that to happen.

just to be clear:
I grew up in N. Syracuse, have lived on Oneida Lake, Cicero, and Clay over the years. I moved into the city on 1992 and other than a brief stint when I lived in Fayetteville which was miserable, there isn't any way I would ever move back to the 'burbs. Now I understand why people live there, they have kids and like a big yard. But I'll take my house on a postage stamp that is close to the Inner Harbor and downtown any day of the week. I can ride my bike to Dinosaur, I'm 5 minutes from the Dome, I can walk my dog or go for a run on the creek walk.

There are good points and bad points for every place on the planet. I'm pretty happy with where I live. If you are too then why take the time to trash the city in which you don't live?

Same thing with my nephew. Graduated four years ago, stayed in Syracuse, got a job with a small privately held technology company that had about 20 employees and he has been promoted twice. Now they have about 80 employees and his next promotion will be to VP and he just bought his first house. He's a smart kid so he would probably be doing well in any area of the country but he likes it here plus where else can you buy a real nice house for next to nothing.

Exactly...why I said it was a poor comparison. To be fairer you needed to include the suburban school districts around Syracuse.

When I think of "service" and "Downtown" it usually means jail back in the 70's,80's and 90's now it's on the internet.
