OT - Tough News To Report

She's a William & Mary grad and received her masters from the University of Chicago. She and I got to sit courtside in CTO seats a number of years ago, a superb day and still appreciated. Well, I have some good news I think. I haven’t said previously to most folks, but she has ovarian cancer and had both ovaries removed a week ago. After a week of testing/analysis on them it turns out that she had two separate cancers. The end result is that she had two different stage 1 cancers. If they had been seen as one cancerous event, it would have been considered stage 3.

She may still have radiation and/or chemo, but I think this is really good news, if anything about cancer can be considered good. I may know more on Friday as she gets her staples removed and meets with her doctor to discuss the next steps. I’d be happy for any insight from those of you wonderful folks in the business, but we’re kind of in a celebratory mood right now. Thank you all for your positive thoughts, vibes, and prayers. Good stuff...

They are absolutely insane in my neighborhood. One flew up my shorts while I was driving on Sunday. It was as bad as it sounds.

She may want to consider proton radiation rather than conventional. Chief advantage is much lower irradiation to surrounding structures and tissues, also radiation side effects are normally less. Disadvantages are availabilty is limited to like ten or twelve places in the country, and cost can be significantly higher if not covered by insurance.
Instead of Xrays(gamma), protons are accelerated to irradiate a specific area using a particle beam accelerator. The beam can be calculated to reach a target area with minimal scatter, exit or entrance damage.
Just something I considered when I had my cancer, but my insurance would not cover so I went conventional.

Yeah, I’m continually touched, pleased, and impressed by the folks here, for a huge host of reasons. This particular time it’s near and dear to my heart. Many times I’m just impressed by the knowledge and wisdom offered by the folks here because of the expertise that exists in this community.

I don’t remember who posted advice to a young flamer many years ago to be careful who they berated because there are incredibly talented, knowledgeable, and successful people that post here. I’ve always thought that to be superb advice. I’m honored to be a part of this place that is no place and appreciate you folks more than I’m able to voice appropriately. Thanks and best wishes to you...

We love you, buddy! We'll continue the prayers/well-wishes, she continues kicking ass.
 
Well, I got to go to Hooville today. Rachel got her staples out, but that was all for today. She has an appt in a month to discuss a round of radiation as the next step. She's healing ok, but the healing process will take a while. It rained most of the day and we saw two accidents in real time. One was a truck heading the other way that took out 1/4 mile of guardrail before running off the road. The other was right in front of us. I had slowed because I saw slow traffic a mile ahead. The car in front of me didn't notice in time and rammed the car in front of him, with both vehicles ending up off the road. Weird day...

Last week I was visiting my son in Florida. He dropped me off at my hotel around 11pm. Thirty seconds later he is waiting at a light to go left and someone comes super fast blowing through the light. Hit three cars including a cop car. Somehow was able to speed off. One person died. So sad.

Proton is the way to go. I used SBRT which is similar with no ill effects
 
Time for another update. Rachel has had three weeks of radiation treatments, six doses in total. Her last dose is on Thursday. I’ll still be around for 2-3 weeks before heading back to Colorado. My older daughter is going to swap locations with me. Thanks for all of your good advice and goodwill...really hoping it’s gone for good...

Man that’s horrible. This is why roundabouts are better than stoplight intersections.

Yeah...it's great. They offered her two options: three higher dosage treatments or six lower dosage treatments. The six dosage option is thought to have fewer long term side effects. She's tired of the drive to Charlottesville but it was an easy choice for her to make...

The fifth and sixth treatments are a doozy, but now it's in the rear view mirror. Thankfully.

And god bless you for being there with her while she had to go through it. Hats off, Shenexon.
