OT worst call ever UB Ohio

So even without being able to review, why didn't they just pick up the flag as an inadvertent flag?

Edit. Ah, because it still was grounding. Seems odd though that there is no "out" for the ref in junta situation to "get it right." Wasn't anyone else nearby to overrule him on the safety part of the call?

It also seems that he outside the tackles so it wouldn't be grounding also. This rule is the worst rule in college football. How many times did Price throw the val out of bounds with no wide receiver near. But because of the grounding rule of outside the tackles it wasn't called!

inexusable mistake. There are judgment calls in football that can go either way. this wasnt one of them.

I saw when it happened, he was on the 4 yard line, but I think he was still inside the tackle box. The refs said the placement of the ball was not reviewable and the announcers said that was the correct call according to rulebook.

sucks for the ref who threw the flag though. total B.S.

How idiotic. The existence of rules is make sure the game is fair for everyone. Use a little common sense, and make the right call by picking up the flag. Everyone knew what the right call was, UB wouldn't have had an argument. Btw, I have always hated the "outside the tackle box" rule. It's a cop out. Throw it near a receiver or take a sack. Reward the defense for making a good play.

the replay starts at one tackle box and ends on the other. was the snap in the middle? if not then he would almost have to be out of the box. why can they review forward/backward pass, passes across the line of scrimmage, and plays that score, but not a pass play that caused a score. .

replays should fix mistakes not ignore them. again there is a part of the rule book that says refs can make up for things not covered in the spirit of rules. fix the mistake. he should have reviewed the play as part of the did it cross the line and then swallowed his pride and said he realized it was inadvertent.

It also has to go past the line of scrimmage if im not mistaken.

I didnt see this play - but it looks as if he could be 20-30 yards behind the line of scrimmage here. He may not have gotten the ball past it.

sometimes i think the half the distance to the goal is a dumb rule. cheating is punished less the worse your field position is. if the penalty pushes you into the end zone, why is that treated different than committing a penalty in the end zone.

I was in the student section while this happened... not even one drunk supported the call.

Thank god the game wasn't decided by that.

One of my friends played LB at Ohio, I can't wait to get his response to this call... nice.

As an Ohio grad I was a little unhappy with the call. "Worst call in history?" Probably because it was just so blatant. Ohio ultimately lost 30-3 so its tough to say it cost them the game but certainly the momentum. A 7-3 game went to 16-3 in a flash when UB scored right away getting the ball on a short field. UB's first TD came on a horrible call. Ohio ball carrier on his knees (both knees) has the ball ripped out well after he's down inside Ohio's 10 yd line. Called a fumble, not overturned on replay. At half time the announcer said he ran into the replay official and was told it wasn't overturned because on the replay the ball carrier was surrounded by several UB players and they couldn't actually see his knees. Bottom line to the game was Ohio just couldn't do anything offensively, Tettleton's passes were high all night and UB has a good defense.

Not even close. The "equipment violation" calls made by the SEC crew against SU in the Dome against Tenn were the worst calls I have ever seen in my life. That was flat out cheating.

Those were horrible, but their late pass interference call will always be the "worst call ever" - that bullsh!t call gave the game to Tenn after SU had legitimately stopped them.

Granting an XP when replay shows the XP missed but still granting the point anyway may have been one of the worst ever. Last night was a bad call but it couldn't be reviewed, that's a problem with the competition committee or whatever it's called in college. If they had reviewed it and upheld the call then it might be the worst ever. Fact is we won a game on a reviewed missed XP that got left on the board anyway. ND's extra FG, the equipment calls against TN, the late hit out of bounds that wasn't late or out of bounds against NW last year, etc, etc still don't compare to being given points after a play is reviewed and replay clearly showing the points should be taken off the board.

but one replay showed it not missing.. that caused quite a bit of confusion..

Agree with this. The UB call was erroneous and dumb. The SU vs. Tennessee calls were unprecedented and appeared deliberate.

Lol. Funny. True.

You weren't kidding about that Buffalo team being pretty good. Open the season losing to two of the top 5 teams in the country. Then struggle to beat Stony Brook in a game they were probably a little beaten up. Since then, they've blown out everyone they've played.

Someone will probably say 'sure they're MAC teams', but blowing out MAC teams is where we all want to be.

The teams Buffalo has beaten have won like 10 games total.

Someone on some site I read (can't remember which) said that instead of doing half the distance, when they get that far back on the field they should add the penalty yardage to the distance to go and keep the ball at the same position.

That's a good idea
