Our PGs appear

It's ways humbling to get a rude awakening, which is what this team just got. We will most likely always struggle with teams that are overly physical on D. We were in the double bous with about 15 minutes in the 2nd half and didn't take advantage. In the past we could deal with a 51-48 type game - however this team isn't good enough on D to win those games. We will want most games in the 70s this year

That was the wrestler, Rick Rude's, put away move. Im sure many wrestler's would agree with you!

Right and history has shown us that whoever plays the best 6 games in March/April wins the ship.
Totally agree. I'll take last years full tourney run vs a great regular season and early flame out every time.

This reminds me of that mighty mighty bosstones "never had to knock on wood" song where he had the line "I'm not a coward I've just never been tested". Well, SU finally got tested, and now we've been measured...basically on our homecourt too.

I think this was the kind of game where we really needed a guy like Malachi with his ability to drain 3s and successfully take his man off the dribble. I know most of us thought the combination of White and Battle would take care of that, but thus far this season, the Battle that we were all expecting has been missing in action. It seemed like it took Mal half a season to really start going hard driving the ball to the rim, so hopefully Battle starts to come on for us after another month or so under his belt.

And this is why national championships aren't won in November. Way too much chest-thumping on this board about what a great team we had, etc.
They are...what we thought they were: a team in transition, with many moving parts, trying to mesh into a cohesive unit.
I HAVE no doubt that come March we'll be clicking on all cylinders, especially on defense. But this was a much needed wake up call, for both the team and the fans.

Why was a wake up call for the fans "much needed"?

He missed 4 FTs when we had a chance to close within 1 possession. I don't think you can overstate how big those were.

Actually, if Howard had gone 4-4, the game still wouldn't have been a 1 possession game after any of those made FTs.

White did go 1-2 from the line, with the team down 5 in 2H. Lydon getting stripped under his own basket, for an SC layup to extend the lead to 6, was a big play.

The hyperbolic venting over our "poor" ranking? The over-inflated perception as to how "easy" it would be to vault to the top of the ACC? Just a couple of things I happened to notice from our fanbase after a couple of cupcakes were dispatched.
Granted, that's not coming from every fan obviously, but a quick read through the threads posted over the last few weeks, will clearly illustrate my point. And "much-needed" in terms of pumping the brakes and letting this thing play out versus declaring us ACC champs in November. JMHO

So, what difference does any of that make? Does it effect the team's play?

Would a more humble fanbase have resulted in a win today?

The only difference is it might make this board more tolerable. On the other hand, the people giving up on the regular season are conspiring to make the board at least a bad.

Of course not, but that's not really the point, is it?
It's my personal observation that our fanbase was premature and jumped the gun in reference to the current status of this years team. IMO, today's result pours cold, and yes, much-needed water on all that overblown hype.
Your question OTOH, simply points out the obvious, which is that what we do on these boards or as a fanbase, has zero affect on the teams performance. Well no isht, Sherlock.
And yet here we are, still posting, arguing, and relating our opinions. I guess that's what message boards are for, no? My opining that the hype was overblown, and a loss was a wake up call to the fanbase, is just that...mine. Agree? Disagree? Well, that's why we're here.

PG is the least of our problems of anything on the court outside lydon.

What we saw here was a early case of we thought we were getting a ton of open jumpshots. That isn't going to happen.

Our defense was suspect to put it mildly. But we have several players who don't fully understand the zone yet, so there's that.
The same lack of experience for many, including Gillon, who have never played at the pace and aggression that SC provided.
Losses are never good lessons according to some, but this gives JB plenty of examples for the guys to learn from.

Time heals all wounds.

They had 50pts with about 4 minutes left. Our D can get better, but it's the least of our issues

Like I said earlier today, even though I was the only one on here to ever tell Doug Gottlieb he sucked to his face, I was also the only one to admit there was a good likelihood he was right, long before the post game whirlwind.

I'm with you on being tired of any overconfident fan base, but especially one that hasn't remotely even been tested, as Gottlieb pointed out, and was proven correct.

As others have noted it's early in the season, and we may not get ****-r**ed by non cream puffs all season. Time will tell if these guys will gel. LGO!!!

Yep Howard played fairly well other than FTs down the stretch
Yep but did you see Gillion? I'm a little concerned after this first game about our backup PG spot, Wisconsin will be a telling game for that position

The offense will come. So will the defense, but in the meantime, lets cover the area we're supposed to cover. Most of that was inexperience that needs to improve rapidly. This was a good team, but if it had been Duke we would have given up a lot more than 50.

One of the announcers was in love with Gillion, I thought he played terrible especially in the first half. I think he s*. . his pants today and was nervous. He was literally throwing jump passes behind him before he reached half court and throwing jump passes before the 3 point line to bigs...
I was less than impressed with Gillon. Driving into the bigs to do what? Dribble 20 seconds off the shot clock? We are much better at this point with howard in the game.

We got killed on the interior as well...Chuwku tries to block every shot and gets out of position leading to multiple putbacks...who cares if he gets 4 blocks but lets up 10 baskets and can't contribute anything on the offensive end...seemed we should have gone to the smaller lineup with lydon at the 5 much earlier in the game...guards couldn't penetrate the first level of defense, spacing was bad, and the passes did not move well east to west...

Gillin was bad today. He has no plan when he drives that deep. Badly needs a floater or a pull up

Lydon had 6 turnovers and was 5 for 12 from the field. Don't think he had a great game.

Agreed. He wasn't bad but certainly wasn't great. This was my point a few days ago about SU's possible lack of a 'go-to' player - Lydon doesn't yet have the skills to create for himself, so he's going to be made to disappear (and maybe make a few turnovers in the process) if our point guards aren't effective.

Agree Otto, but I also believe part of what we saw was TL pressing to do things when nobody else was contributing very much.

Howard is as good as MCW and leaving early for the draft this year. I read it here.

Your reading comprehension is poor at best, because that is not what was written.
