Does anyone know if we are at 85 or do we have any room if psu players are allowed to immediately transfer?

With the recent transfers, it's kind of unclear how many spots we have open. But if you include Raymon and Clark, we have 83 players on scholarship right now.

Ethics question for all...

Scholarships are awarded on a year-to-year basis. With the anticipated talent purge coming, does SU look into revoking the scholarships of one (or more) of our depth chart players in order to make room? Possibly someone that's never made it off special teams or the practice squad?

As poor as this may be, it's something that is done with regularity in college athletics.

Won't happen here, overtly. Not under Marrone. You'd have to be in the doghouse big-time and not giving it your all.

We did it just a few years ago.

I, personally, am vehemently opposed to taking away a kid's scholarship except in cases of extreme circumstances like committing a felony and such. Taking away a student's education because they didn't pan out the way you thought after they have given so much time and dedication to playing is such a shi--y thing to do. Classless and I don't care what major program or coach does it, it remains classless.

also how would the current S.U.players react to a few penn.st. kids coming and competing for their playing time.

just might cause more harm than good.

Now that you mention it, didn't HCDM do exactly this when he took over at Syracuse? Obviously its an apples to oranges comparison as the circumstances were much different...but still.

As for this, I'd imagine that an athlete would welcome the challenge. I don't see how chasing after a top flight field goal kicker (for example) would ruin team chemistry. The same holds true for position players. If the addition helps the team win, how could any of these players object?

i thought we did something else.. we told each kid how they stood and whether they would ever expect to get time on the field. the ones who were told to expect little, then had the option to leave and many took it. but there is also a clear difference in doing that when a new coach comes in and doing it years later.

Very hypothetical at this point, but if current players are given the opportunity to transfer and be eligible immediately I wonder if some type of waiver will be granted against the 85 ship rule to allow the players to have some flexibility in finding a landing spot.

Perhaps with unprecedented sanctions there should also be unprecedented allowances made. What is going to happen to PSU is totally beyond these student athletes control. Why couldn't the NCAA make allowances for these kids to go to any program they choose, regardless of the schools available scholarships, within a limit of perhaps 2 or 3 exclusively for these transfers. Crazy thought.

If that happens those players become the most valuable players in college football.

Pshychic phenomena. Same thought. You must be Italian too.

If it makes the team better, they would get over it.

How do you feel about a HS student who was given an academic scholarship to attend a university, but loses it when he gets a 2.0 GPA because he's too busy partying with his friends?

The coaches are well-aware of which players are working hard to improve their athletic ability, which is why it's not uncommon for a walk-on to be awarded a scholarship. They are also well-aware of players who are not trying.

Right. That's what he did. That's a lot different than revoking scholarships. There was a recent article about a kid who decided to stay even after Marrone said he wasn't impressed with the kid. The player worked hard and ended up starting and is very thankful for Marrone's honesty and looks up to him. I can't recall the player's name. Think it was a defensive lineman.

Tucker Brumbaugh (sp)?

Not exactly but it's not worth the discussion after all this time and is water under the bridge.

I believe what will happen is the NCAA will allow teams to go over the 85 limit with PSU players this year. However they will have to even out their numbers within the next year. I.e. take 2 PSU transfers and you have two less scholarships for the 2013 recruiting class.

Baumach, though I am not sure how much he actually liked Marrone. I heard that alot of the Robinson carry over's weren't happy with the way he ran stuff, though not all of them. I believe that's why he did not come back for his senior redshirt season.

I read an article where TB heaped endless praise on HCDM for helping him through a crisis (pregnant girlfriend) during his senior year. He stated that he has the utmost respect for HCDM and believes he is doing right by the program.

I also believe that is true. There will be a one year exemption. The following year you must be back at 85.

I'm pretty sure that was Jonathan Meldrum.

Tucker Brumbaugh (sp)?
I was referring to Jonathon Meldrum: "My very first memory of Coach Marrone was when he addressed the team for the first time. He allowed each player to set up a 15 minute introduction. So I signed up and decided to go first thing in the morning. I went into his office and started talking and he looked at me and said, "If this was an interview I would tell you to leave." I was so shocked and intimidated by his honesty and didn't know how to take it. I was in his office for maybe three minutes before I asked to leave. That was the last time I really talked to him until fall camp. I was in my third day of camp in 2009 when my wife (my then girlfriend) called me and told me she was pregnant. I had no idea what to do. So during my afternoon practice I was doing terribly and could not focus. Coach Marrone pulled me over to the side and asked me what was wrong. I told him that my girlfriend was pregnant and I was nervous and scared and didn't know what to do. He looked at me and said, "Do you love her?" I said, "Yes.". He then asked, "Are you going to marry her?" I responded, "Yes." He then said, "You have nothing to worry about if this is the girl that you want to spend your life with. Being a father is the best thing in life so enjoy it." I looked at him and knew everything was going to be alright. That day I respected him more then most people in my life. Coach Marrone is a brilliant man and an amazing coach. He has done wonders for Syracuse football and has given it a fighting chance. His knowledge of the game is incredible and he can see everything on the field. Coach Marrone is a huge role model for me!"
