Outlier 2020

Ha! No. Wins are important. But it's a weird way to quantify quality if you're really trying to figure out if a coach is any good. (This is obvious - going undefeated at Alabama is better than going undefeated at Bowling Green for example).

Here's a quick and dirty way to see a) how good the team is (SRS, simple rating system) and b) how tough of a schedule they played against (SoS). Info here

These are the best 10 teams in the last 20 years:

SRSYear/HCW-LSoS
113.542001/Pasqualoni10-36.23
212.142018/Babers10-31.30
36.942000/Pasqualoni6-53.12
46.272012/Marrone8-50.81
54.112003/Pasqualoni6-60.95
62.812013/Shafer7-62.88
71.962017/Babers4-85.80
81.302010/Marrone8-5-2.16
9-0.72004/Pasqualoni6-61.76
10-1.512015/Shafer4-83.91

What does this say? Coach P was a very good coach. Babers and Marrone are basically tied, Shafer is a bit underrated due to playing crazy schedules. Dino fielded the 2nd best team of the last 20 years. Dino's 2017 season is underrated.

There's some other interesting things from that page. I'll post more when I get a second.

Some miscellaneous thoughts on your post:

1. I agree that the 2017 team was much better than it's 4-8 record indicated. That was a bowl-caliber team when fully healthy. It was also the 10th most difficult schedule in program history.

2. The 2000 team had a fantastic defense. If we just had a functional quarterback that team could easily have been 8-3 instead of 6-5. The 12-10 loss to Cincinnati in Week 2 was maddening.

3. I think Liverpool High School played a harder schedule than us in 2010.

4. You often read on this board that the 2012 schedule was excessively hard. I took a look at sports-reference.com after seeing this table, and in the past 50 years only six SU teams played easier schedules than 2012 (2019, 2010, 1999, 1997, 1993, 1970).

Lucky he had a Shaffer recruit at QB.

VA Tech was missing half their team for two games due to Covid. Our injuries should be the difference between winning and losing, but they shouldn't excuse looking inept on O, and lacking overall fundamentals and discipline.

Va Tech Had 23 & 21 out first 2 games, how many were starters?
Their offensive line was intact had good depth, the starting db’s and rover was hit ( because of being arrested) and one of their Qb’s was out but they flip back and forth between Hooker and Burmeister
NC State game depth chart looks like they (Va Tech) had a lot more to work with

FYI They will be down 13 for their game against BC

And Shafer had Marrone recruits. Marrone had Gerg guys. Etc. That’s how this works.

We might not get Dino without Eric lol
Without a turn around by DB he is another Shaffer.
