Looks like Joe's point guard play is gonna be a strength of this year's team, n'est-ce pas?

J. Girard III--FG 6-93-pt 5-5FT 3-303R 3A 7S 10TO 10Pts 20

Very good game. But a strength of the team…We’ll see. Just overall quality PG play is important. Last year many were saying that him off the ball with open catch and shoot looks was a fine position vs searching for his own shot at the 1. Trying to set teammates up so far this year has been pretty good. Some nice look ahead passes tonight, plenty of chemistry with Jesse in exhibition. Aka quality PG play.

Certainly a promising game 1. The longer, more physical teams will pose greater challenges, obviously. I don’t doubt he will be up for it, from a confidence standpoint.

It was very good. I spent most of the night asking myself “what exactly do we have here?” We certainly have a team with chemistry. They appear to be playing for a greater good. Certainly like to share the ball (maybe too much at times). Certainly appear to have v good size. Certainly appear to be less quick than prior years. Certainly appear more efficient.

I think this team could be special (I mean I picked them to win it all…) but I need another few games to really know. Atlantis will tell us alot

Speaking of PGs, I liked what I saw from Symir.

I don't think it was an accident that Swider finally got going when Symir was in the game.

He really understands how to facilitate as a PG.

back story: psychologically, swider struggled with not living up to his national high school rankings at Nova.

He hasn't "proven it" yet at Cuse and he struggled in the first half - he was pressing a little.

Joe played a great game...not really a criticism of him, per se...but next level PG play...wouldve been thinking..."gotta get Swider involved"...just a small observation.

Overall, nothing to really criticize Joe on - just some thoughts that crossed my mind while watching...

If Joe wants to play professionally - he's gotta become a PG maestro a la Steve Nash imo...

On the other hand, maybe for Joe to do well, he just needs to focus on his own game and not really worry about stuff like whether swider or benny or whomever is getting enough shots...maybe that would be like trying to dance instead of just dancing...idk

Girard is going to get a butt load of shots as the third option on the perimeter. And lots of them will be wide open.

There’s no need for him to force shots most nights. He really needs to be patient. The pull up turnaround forced 10 footer needs to be mothballed.

But he looks more comfortable running the team.

? Joe got him the ball plenty. He missed them all especially in the first half.

Yeah he did get him the ball...he cant control if another player makes or misses.

but I think Joe is a shooting gaurd in a point guards body, basically...

And he doesn't really "think the game" as a facilitator. Or he hasnt in previous seasons.

I think he is starting to get there...this game he was really sharp from a decision making side...but I think the next level of his evolution will be when he starts dictating what happens on the court more.

Manipulating the action instead of surfing the waves of the action, so to speak.

I’m sure you have noticed over the years but JBs lead guards are usually score first mentality types. Is what it is…

i mean, I've seen it all...lazarus sims was not. sherman douglas wasnt... you could even look at like allen griffin...its been a wide range...although the current decade or so has been that way...

to me the team has been the best when the PG is an actual PG - whether they are score first or not.

jonny flynn or tyler ennis were really good scorers..and MCW was pretty good too...but they all were primarily PG and they knew it. Its a lot to ask of a shooting gaurd to play as a PG...

Im encouraged by JG3 this season and what I've seen for sure, though.

Ok you are going to guys like 20-30 years ago lol. And sherm was a 17-18 ppg guy

well i think with the weapons this team has...a player like symir who cant really play as a score first PG (it seems) is actually better for the team..

but in general yeah its great if your PG can be a Damian Lillard.

And I think Joe is aware of the situation...from his post game interview...and agrees.

Joe played well. It was good to see him in shape. He is always going to be limited on D and against pressure but with this team he has less on his shoulders. Bring the ball up, initiate the o, hit your open looks, play hard on D.
He doesn't need to win games he just needs to play his part.

It occurs to me that--after nailing 5 of 5 three pt shots attempted--Joe should now be at the very top of College Basketball rankings nationally for three pt shooters. (!)

May he remain at that top spot for weeks to come...:)

Some kid for Davidson was 6 for 6. Joe will have to catch him against Drexel.

If you caught Girard's post-game interview, he emphasized several times that his role this year is to provide experienced leadership and make the players around him better. It's obvious he's has really embraced his role as the team's PG and seemingly downplayed his role as a scorer.
As an aside, I thought he came off as mature and well-spoken.

He looked great.

But Lafayette has players that he can and should dominate. And last night, he did. We'll see if he can perform with any level of consistency against bigger, more physical and athletic players. Those types of players have given him immense problems in the past.

If he can, it's going to be a good year. But right now, PG play shapes up as the team's biggest potential Achilles heel.

The thing I like about this team so far is that it's a TEAM. It doesn't have to be carried by one guy as Buddy did last year or as Joe carried Glens Falls. Each player can just relax, do his job and take advantage of opportunities that come their way. That should dramatically improve efficiency at all positions.

With more shooting options Joe needs the quick hook after taking a dumb shot.
