Paul Pasqualoni heads Syracuse Sports HOF Class of 2021

Well deserved. SU should honor him ASAP, while Paul is still around and can enjoy some recognition for the great job he did at Syracuse in person. I am sure it was harder when he was still an active coach in college football or the NFL.

He is a special assistance to Meyer at Florida these days. I would imagine he can get a Saturday off to participate in a halftime ceremony at the Dome. Why not honor Paul at halftime of a home game this year?

Have some of his best players there as well. Let's do it on homecoming. Make it a super homecoming and invite a lot of his former players to be part of things. Donovan, Marvin, Rob, Qadry, Keith, Donovin, etc. We need to heal old wounds and break the football family back together again.
I’ll second that !!

He deserves the Syracuse Sports HoF no question. I do wonder if he ever did make it to the dentist for braces. Never too late. Or maybe he’s just anti-dentite.

P is second best all time after Ben, in my opinion.

I know Mac was more charismatic but I think P had a more impressive career.
Yeah - I tend to agree with you. But it really depends on what metric you like between those 3

I will say this about Mac... I was always under the impression that he played a lot of cream puff schedules, and I was wrong. That's not the case.

1981, 1982 and 1984 were in the Top 10 of hardest schedules in program history.

Untrue
It was a joke…. Not a good one I guess, but a joke nonetheless.

I really just wanted to see DG on two cellies at the same time.

In 1984, Syracuse had a truly brutal schedule.

Maryland ended up 9-3, were the undefeated champs of the ACC and finished 12th in the final AP poll.

Northwestern stunk but beating a B1G team on the road is never easy and was not that year.

Rutgers finished 7-3 and was ranked 25th in at least one poll.

Nebraska was #1 in the country, undefeated when we played them. They won the B8 and finished 4th in the country in the final AP poll.

Florida won the SEC, was undefeated in conference play and finished 3rd in the final AP poll.

West Virginia finished 8-4, and was ranked in at least one poll at the end of the season.

Penn State was 19th when we played them but also got beat up by a tough schedule and finished 6-5.

Freaking Army was coached by Jim Young back then and was on a big high. They ended up 8-3-1 and won the Cherry Bowl against Michigan State. We would follow them there the following season.

Pitt only finished 3-7 but they had Ironhead Heyward, Teryl Austin and Chris Doleman.

Even Navy was good. They finished 4-6-1. Bill Byrne was a fine QB and their RB was Napoleon McCallum. He was hurt most of 1984 or they surely would have also had a winning record.

And the season ended with BC, who had Flutie in his senior year. They finished 10-2, 5th in the final AP poll and Doug won the Heisman.

So we played 3 of the top 5 teams in the country, Maryland finished 12th, and WVU and Rutgers were border line top 25 teams. Penn State was also ranked most of the season and Army was just outside the top 25.

One of those early 80s years, was the year SU played I think 7 teams who had QBs who got some time in the NFL, ranging from Esiason and Flutie to Laufenberg. Tough year.

Great Chart Eric15, I notice quite a few Frank Maloney years on this chart as well.

I think Jake, Mac, Paul and George all deserve equal credit for that run of success.

No Ringo's in that group.

Man - in retrospect that 2001 team is really underrated. Only losses were to teams ranked in top 10 (GT, Tenn, Miami), and beat 2 ranked teams. Offense of RJ Anderson, Mungro, and no dominate receiver. Freeney really carried that DF and team overall. I remember Freeney perfecting the sack and forced fumble combo that year.

Our non-conference schedule that year was very tough. Outside of GT, Tenn and Auburn, even East Carolina and Central Florida were both formidable teams. There were no FCS layups at all.

The East Carolina game was one of the most embarrassing games in Dome history when people booed Nunes coming in for an injured RJ.

I remember Freeney perfecting the sack and forced fumble combo that year.

And perfecting it with a pop warner sized jersey in an attempt to prevent all the holding he was seeing from OTs. He single handedly changed field position on so many occasions.

Dude's record was 107–59–1 and he won the Fiesta bowl and trounced Clemson in the Gator Bowl. Absolutely deserved.
Syracuse was the "fun" team of the 90s for many years. The Baylor if you will. Tons of sugar and some spice (The What NC State loss comes to mind). P took the Mac blueprint and s*xed it up with Graves/McNabb running the show.

We tend to lament about the end of P but the era of P was alot of fun for alum who were on the Hill at that time. It was never out of the realm of possibilities that Syracuse football could beat anyone on any given year. We had the chance yearly playing Miami which was the ultimate put up or shut up game because they were one of the best (the Clemson of today's ilk).

I'm happy for Paul. I hope if he does show up to the Dome to a massive standing ovation and hope many of his former players come to celebrate w him

If Mac is in the College Football HOF is there any logical reason P shouldn't be also?
Not sure if it's "logical", but Mac's defining 1987 season is what got him in, and unfortunately P didn't have that kind of singular year.

Looking at who's in the national HOF, seems that if they're going to enshrine Mike Bellotti, Fisher DeBerry, Lloyd Carr and Barry Alvarez, then P has a case to be in.

I agree w this logic across the board. Mac's 87 season is a wine cellar season for Syracuse.

In a sliding door scenario, if Gedney pulls a Gronk and trucks into the endzone against Miami in 92, does anything change with regards to that season bowl game wise/national title implications? I mean do we finish top 3? I also think if the 5th down play vs Tenn goes another way, we probably lose to Michigan the following week b/c that's what happened then.

Yes, I've thought about that before too. This is the all-time "ridiculous hypothetical with no grounding in reality" that I nevertheless feel 100% certain about.
