You really couldn't hand check back when he played...and it made guarding him almost impossible. Teams like Pitt would tackle him at half court if he played today. Enjoy.

superstar and the ultimate showman in syracuse history

Couldn't really shoot beyond 15'. Not that fast. Not a great assist to TO ratio. Couldn't dunk.

Most exciting player in SU's modern era.

Nothing will ever beat "Syracuse" in script. Best. Jerseys. Ever. TGD needs to do a throw back jersey night.

its not even debatable. Best jerseys in our history are the script ones.

Best handle in the history of SU wow simply amazing. Dion really has that Pearl look doesnt he?

Almost brings tears to my eyes. Jaw-dropping then and jaw-dropping now.
Thanks, Jake, for posting.
:)

That half court shot has got to be one of the all-time top 5 Syracuse "moments". Not to hijack your thread Jake, but seeing Pearl's shot from halfcourt got me thinking. Anyone have any moments besides that half court shot and "the block" that they would nominate for Syracuse's "top five" all time moments? I think I would have to nominate Hak's dunk from outside the key area. Others?

I've told this story before, My father ushered in section 303 which is right behind the basket upper level. I used to sneak into the games with him and would stand with him at the bottom of the tunnel. That game I was literally standing on the railing and when Pearl made the shot (he threw it right at me it seemed like) I almost fell off the 3rd deck as I leaped with my hands on the railing pushing off and literally landed on top of the railing when I came down. Thankfully my father grabbed me or I would have been the headlines that night.

Also, notice Pearl does all that and not a single time does he "palm" the ball. A wizard.

I can remember JB saying that Pearl was the only player he knew who could move faster with the ball than without it.

Had the best off-hand (left-hand) dribble I've ever seen, then or now.
That left hand dribble made his game so unique- just check those BET/GTown highlights.
Wow!!!

Funnest player to watch.
Most exciting player to watch.
Made the crowd ooh and aah more than any other SU player in history.
Got the most out of what God gave him that any other SU player.
Probably our smartest player ever too, at least in terms of basketball intelligence.

I wish we had a chance to see him play his senior season here.

Wow!!!

Good call. Didn't realize it at the time, but after watching those higlights again, his best moves were always to his left. So much fun to watch.

You think of killer crossovers and Tim Hardaway comes to mind, maybe some others. But no one, and I mean no one could break ankles without EVER SWITCHING HANDS. That is amazing, to watch him break ankles without ever switching hands. How do you do that? He had such wiggle and shake he could juke players out of there shoes with just a head shake. Amazing player, and someone I wish I had seen play live.

Had a chance to play with Pearl in the old "Media vs SU football" team games they used to have. Alas, he was a no show at the game. Did get to play with Rosie Bouie, which was probably the highlight of my life. I played with Shumpert, Allen Griffin, etc..., but playing a game with Pearl would have topped them all.

I keep telling our b-ball kids the value of bank shots and the stopping for the 10-12ft jumper.. nothing does it like watching Pearl.. 90% of the kids will never dunk but they all want to take it to the rim when a simple bank shot is so much easier to make in traffic..

learn how to make a cross over dribble and bank a jumper and you can play all day..

Where can I get one of the script jerseys from then? Ebay or is there a better place?

The closest thing to actually having a Harlem Globetrotter on your team. Pearl Washington. I was lucky enough to get him to shake my hand and scribble something which didn't really resemble an autograph on my program after a Cuse/ Uconn game at the Hartford Civic Center. I was screaming for Pearl and Cuse the entire game. I was lucky they didn't take me out of that place on a stretcher.

Dion is a better athlete than Pearl, but Dwayne had that special magic that comes along only once in awhile...

5 minutes of highlights and no dunks. i really don't know what espn was thinking.totally different players.
