Class of 2023 PF Tasman Goodrick (Australia) TRANSFERING TO SYRACUSE (4/8/26)

Not the “sexy” pick up but the guys you need. If he stays healthy he’s definitely an upgrade over Souare. Have to think about these guys in practice too. During practice do you think Souare and his talents were helping other bigs get better everyday by going against them? No. This kid is better than Souare. He’s a big body. Not overly athletic. But he’s skilled, big, and he’s a really good rebounder. Not gonna blow you away offensively but skilled enough to get some baskets. He’s not a big time run protector but he’s big enough where you aren’t gonna back him down and he stays in front of his guy. Really his biggest asset is rebounding and he’s a plus screen setter (extremely important and underrated trait for a big man)
Riley Mulvey set very good screens in the Duke game. As a guy who got so many open shots at the basket in his three years playing with Craig Forth, it might just be something GMAC focuses on with his big men.

Good screens make offense so much easier. It was agonizing watching our lackluster screens at times.

Sometimes I wanted to scream "Just go to the corner so at least you aren't getting in the way of the ball handler!"

We used to have such thin centers the opposition could easily evade any screen set.

Soare was pretty good defensively.

23zone - he averaged 3 blocked shots and 9 rebounds per 40 minutes. He was 3 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier than Will Kyle and didn't get shoved under the basket like Kyle did.

If we have someone who defends as well as Soare as our 3rd or 4th big man in the rotation next season, that will be a win.

But not so competitive vs Indiana, and not exactly dominant in their league (13-7, 3rd place). Don’t put too much weight on one game.
Siena outscored Indiana in the second half 40-35.

Ben McCollum brought 5 players from Drake to Iowa. Two were bench players and ended up starting this year. 2 of those kids were D2 or JUCO originally.

I don't think its a fair comparable. Drake was a far better team that performed at the level of an average P4 team in 2024/2025.

Drake was 31-4, and 11 seed. KP#52. Won its 6/11 game. And while the MVC is not the ACC... its way better than the MAAC.

One of those players, Stirtze, was a first rounder if he had left for the NBA last year. Sure he was a "D2" kid but that doesn't mean much when he is a first round pick in the 2025 NBA draft (had he entered)

Two of those other players played 20 minutes a game on a strong Drake team. It shouldn't be a surprise that they could contribute a role on Iowa either.

Siena was #180 in KP. There are various factors that suggest they are somewhat better than #180... so lets say #120-#140, as I pull something out of my... But they were nowhere near the quality of Drake.

Ehhh bench players for Drake to me are similar to Siena starters. Doty would have been Drake’s second best player after Stirtz. Also I did a bunch of research on this. There’s at least 8-10 MAAC players who’ve done fine in the SEC, BE, MW, and Big 10 over the last 5 years. There may be more. I really only looked at the top scorers in that conference during the time.

To me there is a noticeable drop in the quality of Siena players after Doty. The board seems to lump in concerns about "Siena players" with concerns about Doty. For me, they are not the same. Any concerns I have about Doty are based on me wishing he shot better from 3, which may very well happen considering how much he improved this past season. The other players are a big drop-off from him in my view.

He’s the only one that has a chance to start. The end of the bench has been horrible for a while now. Pretty sure those guys are better than the Womacks, Howard Washington’s, souare’s, Sean Williams of the world and I could go on.

Everyone talks about Sienas 3rd place finish, but it likely would have been a lot better had the Aussie not missed most of the year. I think he’s fine with a backup center. I think people are getting themselves in a wad over the 8th to 11th guys on the depth chart and Folefac hasn’t even signed yet.

Well, duh.
He was an all-conference player.

Doty’s 3-ball % isn’t atrocious, and he did that as THE MAN on every opponent scouting report.
As ‘a’ man on Cuse, hopefully he’s option 2 or 3 at best, so not drawing the best wing defender every game.

Folefac was all-conf Defensive team.

Everybody else was Just A Guy, and/or injured.

The Aussie seems like a worthwhile gamble for a backup C -
IF he can get & stay healthy.
He’s vastly better at basketball than Souare.

I think that is a story to be watched and told yet.
Folefac is production and potential Goodrick is experience with production and low expectations. So as it pertains to building a team in this era that is more than on par with a formula for success in terms of utilizing those 3. I’m cautiously optimistic still yet because of the staff that will be charged with making all of this work from the remaining needs to what’s in the gym already.

I think the doubt will subsist until we play a game no matter what our 12 - 15 guys is made up of.

You give us too much credit. We will think we are either NC contenders or completely horrendous after we play a game.

Folefac seems like a Jyare Davis kind of acquisition, to me.

I like the Aussie center as a backup.

We still need a rim protector, physical defender.

And of course a very good point guard.

Folefac is also 6-7, like Jyare Davis, and may not be up to the physical challenge of the best ACC teams on a night-after-night basis. One good game against Duke doesn't make him 3 inches taller.

I think we're all waiting with baited breath on some legit tested P4 player commits.

The Euro kid may be that, but hard to know until he really gets here and shows his wares at this level.

I have no problem backfilling the roster with mid-major or low-major players for depth, but we need some P4 horses in the stable... Also not convinced Doty will be more than a good 6th man at this level... Hopefully he will be but that's a bit of a diceroll I think.

Agreed. It feels like we’re punching below the level we should be playing at.

A bunch of Siena and mid majors kids
Isn’t going to cut it. We are already lacking athleticism, shooting and size so whatever else we do must address those.
