Class of 2023 PG Garwey Dual (TX) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (4/11/26)

I think Gerry deserves the benefit of the doubt with all he’s done so far - great outside the family hires for his staff, a stealth Euro that Givony compared to Corey Kispert and an underrated portal get in Doty.

I say underrated because I think he has a “package deal” / Siena assumption that creates a negative perception.

The portal is like NFL free agency, you don’t want to overpay early for the shiny objects.

Cusesky posted this in the Donnie thread but it applies here. Can’t just focus on heart and hustle defensive guys. Hoping we have more portal splashes to come.

I’m sure a lot of people on this board have been around basketball. We can all laugh thinking about that person with great work ethic on the court that could just not score no matter the offensive teaching, work, or development.

Kinda makes me chuckle thinking about some of the guys over the years that I’ve been around. Whether poor shooting form, lack of footwork, etc. As Geno said, it’s an impossible teach 😂.

I'm confused - some people will only be happy if we pay a good player as if he is a great player? And will be mad if we pay a good player as if he is an average player?

I’ll start out by saying that obviously there will be more additions to the team. That being stated, as others have said, this addition underwhelms me. I understand some people believe in a build the bench first so you know how much money you have left for the starters, strategy. I do not share that philosophy. Call me negative if you want, I really don’t care. Hopefully the biggest additions are still to come. That would get me excited for the season. Admittedly, I wasn’t that thrilled with Gerry’s hire, but he got me pumped up at his introductory presser. Next there was the talk that money would not be an issue this year. I moved in to the excitedly skeptical category. With a couple of big time additions still to come, I’ll be all in. If not, I’ll wonder if Gerry is trying to replicate his third place finish in the MAAC.

I agree 100% and know exactly who else was interested in him. Believe me, it was a nice get. But the schools that were recruiting him wanted him for his motor and defense abilities. I think us using him as an 18 ppg type of player would be an mis-usage of a very good player.

I was banking on Doty and an elite scorer like Wilkinson to compliment him at the point. I hope I’m wrong but a guy like Dual has the exact same weaknesses as Doty and that will cause problems.
Fair enough and that makes total sense depending on his role here. As an avid reader of this board I do appreciate all the insight we get from insiders like yourself, Bulldog, Dasher, etc. With that being said Red was the belle of the ball for basically 3 off seasons. Take last year with George, Kingz, the incoming freshman we were told money was being raised, he was modernizing S&A, it was all turning around. It was just the capper of 3 horrible years.

Take away the Siena adds, this is really our first portal addition. (MMM seems like a great freshman get as well) Just feels fast to already turn on G Mac, and frankly unfair with the leash Red got on here.

He is big and rangy and can definitely defend. Can put it on the floor, has good a/to numbers. Jumpshot is interesting form if nothing else lol. If he's the top guard off the bench I think we will be quite happy indeed

I’d be happy with Tobiason. Tillery doesn't do all that much for me. I’d be more interested back in the day when you could develop players over the course of a few years instead of being able to transfer on a yearly basis. He doesn’t scream plug and play to me. Any word on a big time center?

Why are people suggesting that spending big money is a good thing? It's not. It's a bad thing. Since we don't have the most money in college basketball, we need to find undervalued players. That's our only path to success. Players like George, Lampkin, and Freeman won't make us good again. It's players like William Kyle and Maliq Brown that will.
So we want it both ways - GMAC was the right here because donors were willing to pony up, AND we shouldn't expect to use that money to get the best guys?

We should get the best value for our money. Whether we overpay or underpay, the NIL money will be spent. Might as well spend it wisely. The only way we can compete with Duke, Louisville, etc. is to get more production for our money than they get for theirs (because they will outspend us every year).

I don't think we are going to be getting any type of big-name player now. I don't know exactly how much money we have, so I don't know if we will or will not be spending it all.

People keep saying it is early, just wait etc...

You are correct, it is early, but it isn't early for us anymore; there aren't many minutes left to distribute. 4 out of 5 starting positions already taken. Backup big is done. We have 1 backup swing man. So we don't have many spots left to fill, and not many truly impactful spots left to fill.
I don’t know that, do you know these are the starters. I who know nothing think Gmac will the players that perform the best in practice, and they are not all here yet!

I think Doty was a legit get and if it was not a given that he was following g mac a lot of the heavy hitters would have been involved
I remember seeing an Oklahoma blog saying they hoped to get him and thought he was a SEC caliber player. Seems like an overall great kid too.
