Class of 2023 PG Jalen Cox (CA) Portal from Colgate (Interest)

Identical numbers. Both 18 and 5.

Wilkins played in a tougher conference, is taller, and is younger. Wilkins has a better list of schools who have contacted him. Wilkins was the best player on an NCAA tournament team, and dominated UConn.
I mean cox has a solid group of teams too

With that said there is a debate here .

Cox averaged 18/ 5/5 plus 1.7 steals. His TS% was 59 last year with a 31 pct assist rate. He put up a rare stat line and had one triple double and was close a couple other times. Very intelligent and instinctive player. Over a 2:1 A to T ratio. I want Wilkins because of the potential but Cox would be a very solid addition.

In surprised he’s only 89 on 247.

He’s a really nice looking player. I would be really happy with him at one of the guard spots

Nowhere near any sort of panic mode. Long way to go. But a Cox, Doty backcourt is bottom tier ACC. Great mid-major players and good kids from what I hear, but that backcourt is no better than anything we had in 24-25.
Hmm. You think so? Are you sure they aren’t just unattractive names on paper when in reality they’re probably really good and would fit with what Gerry is going for?

I would love for them to work out and I think Doty will be awesome and a surprise. Bottom line is Cox was the best player on an ok Patriot League team. Lehigh won the conference and got ran out of the gym in Dayton. It’s a significant jump in talent level coming to the ACC.

I see a major problem in your two starting guards coming from low level division one basketball. Just like Lucas Taylor and all of those dudes. They are complimentary players at this level.

Doty will be brilliant here but not if he has to play like he did at Siena.

Idk I think it’s solid tbh. We are too drawn to that season. Terrible coach and Carlos was too small with no offensive ability.

Understood but to be fair, Taylor & Carlos were never that good to begin with.

We might potentially have 2 guards that both averaged 18 a game respectably in their own leagues.

Taylor & Carlos were decent players in bad conferences. Cox & Doty are REALLY good players from similar conferences.

Assuming cox can play solid defense (can he?) then that’s potentially already an upgrade over George. You have Doty a cox who will probably score at a respectable clip in the ACC as well.

Ehh Cox was way more efficient and didn’t turn the ball over at the rate Wilkins did. It’s not like Cox didn’t play well against good competition. It’s the classic production vs potential argument.

I would love to be wrong. They are awesome kids.

But with 12m + available. We gotta go get some proven high major players. Go spend on Wilkinson, who was the best player on an 8 seed and scored 30 points in Buffalo @ NCAA Tournament. Think it’s worth it to drop 2.5 million on a kid like that.

Just with the position our program is in, I think it’s way too risky to put two guys from Colgate and Siena in our backcourt and hope that they punch above their expected weight this coming season.

I completely hear all of your guys sides to the argument. And if we land Cox, I will definitely be rooting to be wrong. But I see a similar pattern of mistakes being made if we do go that path.

That’s why you go get the euro kid. Anthony and Doty battle it out for a starting spot at the other wing position.

I totally get it but who says we arnt going to get two top level guards? I could see that happening. I’m sure we have plenty of money left

Literally no one wanted Carlos… completely different situation. Carlos had a couple nice games. Cox put up big numbers at a high rate of efficiency all year long and will be a senior coming in.

I do want Wilkinson. I also see no problem with Wilkins or Cox being where we land.

Last year vs Florida, MSU and Illinois, he averaged 11.3/5/5. And im guessing the scouting report was to lock him down.
