Class of 2016 PG Tyus Battle (NJ) Signed LOI

How many scholarships do we have available for 16?
As of right now it looks like two and one of them is going to Moyer, so whichever guard commits first gets the last spot. Of course we may see more attrition or gain a couple scholarships back from the appeal and have more wiggle room when it comes down to it.

And it's looking like they expect that ... They're still very much interested in Sedee Keita who is also the class of 2016, right? Maybe the schollies get knocked down to 6 and the three this year count towards the total. Heck, they might even be able to field a full 2016 class.

Let's hope Jimmy can deliver the goods tonight. One way or another, we'll know where we stand very shortly and can finish this class...or join the Murray dogfight.

One thing is for sure it suddenly seems like JB will be hitting the road to recruit more than he has in years. I imagine he is energized and ready to kick back at the NCAA as hard by fielding and coaching up the best possible team he can.

Let's see if JB can convince Battle to be part of a mega back court with one of the other highly rated guards that we are pursuing.

I figure that's attributable to the NCAA restrictions. Weren't we limited to fewer coaches being able to go on the road to recruit? If so, then it makes sense for JB to be one of the ones hitting the road.

Between the 4 guards we are in on for 16 you have to think we will get one of them. For me the order is:
1a. Battle
1b. Simmons
2. Murray
3. Gilbert

honestly, i think battle has the most potential, but i think murray would contribute most from day 1 and have biggest impact.

The "Battle front" is looking confused at this point

Positive:
His father has always been very complimentary of Syracuse saying that we have shown him the most love
He had also held at least a slim chance Tyus could commit after one of these visits (Duke/UL) - sort of the impulse buy - but that did not happen. Great news.

Negative or Confusing
Syracuse has suddenly gotten very interested in two other 2016 guards. I think it is good to cover bases, but it seems an abrupt change to the strategy.
Do we think Tyus' interest is waning and/or will he interpret that our interest is waning from these recent moves?

Luckily, even the new "backup plan" guys are elite level players and not 3 star project types so I am happy with the approach being taken. Further, it appears JB himself is doing the recruiting which is also somewhat rare these days if I understand things, so that is also a big positive.

I think the new offers by JB are a strategy for his in-home visit. This is the close. Either Battle commits, or we move on. This is the last meeting. That's why the new offers are out. We'll have the summer to look over those other 2 kids if Battle doesn't join us.

I like Murray, too. More of a natural PG than Battle. Both are terrific players, though.

agree. i saw it was a potential leverage move, but could be a dangerous game. im ok with it.

If we don't land Battle do people think that these sanctions have truly damaged the reputation of the school/program/coach? It seems like Battle has been ours to lose. I think he is a vital recruit to get just in the sense of how much time has been put in on him. Obviously the PG spot is unsettled moving forward meaning that nobody knows how good KJ or Howard will be. Big ifs. But, it seems like the staff wants and needs Battle badly.

I don't think it will be as much about the reputation being damaged as it is the roster being damaged. Elite players want to go where they can contend. Yes, there are other factors too -- but if a kid like Battle doesn't view our roster as being adequate due to being diminished by NCAA sanctions, he's apt to head elsewhere.

Even in light of the sanctions, the Battles have gone out of their way to give props to our head coach and his staff. There's no reason to think that the reputational hit is the issue if we lose out on Battle.

Obviously the staff probably has a favorite, and presumably that is Battle, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be satisfied with any of the three. It's only a dangerous game if you aren't really going to be satisfied with any one of the three that you offer. It's more important to get a high quality guy in in that position be it Battle, Murray or Simmons than to go all the way to the end with Battle, get zipped and then be stuck scrambling for a second or third tier guy.

Chance of a Battle commitment tonight? 5%? 10%? He's seen what Louisville and Duke can offer. He knows what Syracuse is offering. A HOF coach, the Melo Center, the adoration of 35,000 screaming fans, and a stuffed fruit for a mascot.

The sanctions (before appeal) have been overreacted to by so many. We operate with less then the full 13 all the time, and how often do we play more than 10 heck close to 10 guys.
