Phil Knight made Oregon Football. Who could make SU Football?

You're aware that the people in the courtside seats are not allowed to stand up and act like idiots during a game.

I'd think that someone who's willing to drop 12k on a pair of courtside seats is probably VERY passionate about SU Basketball.

If only there was a courtside ticker holder we could ask about whether or not she's actually passionate about Syracuse basketball...

Ooh No doubt CTO is a passionate fan. I and we all know that.

Maybe it's just more envy/jealousy as I said before.

It's painful to read because we are all diehards but I agreed with 100% of this post. My only comment is I do not believe SU needs to be a brand football team to be considered successful. Our goal needs to be the second biggest football presence in the Northeast-Mid-Atlantic Football behind PSU.

A billionaire benefactor would certainly help, but it is not totally necessary. Just look at the SU basketball team. Their brand is based around a style of defense and a humongous facility. When people think of SU basketball they think of the 2-3 and the Carrier Dome.

The football team could follow this formula to make a name for themselves. They already have a unique thing going with the Carrier Dome. And although it may be considered a gimmick by some, SU should adopt something like a totally air it out offense. Hell, throw the ball 50/6o times a game. Throw the deep pass once or twice a drive. Regardless of whether you know anything about SU football, that would sure be interesting to watch and would garner outside attention. Or follow the Georgia Tech formula and run the triple option.

It all boils down to doing something unique and owning it.

I wish it were that cheap. $12,500 per seat front row, $10,000 3rd row & $7,500 2nd row and that was awhile ago. Either $70 or $80k per box not including drink & food - might be less for football only boxes.

CuseHulk - you continue to amaze me about your naivety - most boxes and many court side seats are company owned and seats are given out to entertain clients while in town. By definition those people may not follow SU sports like diehards like you but are there for other reasons like business. Boxes and court side seats pay for Dome operations otherwise both your seats and your beer would be even more expensive than what you pay today.

For a live P5 level sports event - you are getting a steal for both football & basketball.

You realize that when you sit courtside, you're literally not allowed to stand up and cheer, right? (You can cheer, you cannot stand the whole game and do it, just to clarify) It's against the actual rules.
Apparently the same rules apply to everyone in any section. The dome is the only venue I've been to for football (and I've been to at least a dozen or so) where I get yelled at by people behind me for having the audacity to stand and yell on third down, or any big play for that matter. It's part of what makes the gameday atmosphere at the dome so uniquely sterile compared to other power 5 venues.

Well, that's just idiots who don't like to stand. But it's literally printed on the ticket contract for courtside seats, so it's an ACTUAL rule.

We just need a good coach and good recruits. The rest takes care of itself. Who was the big booster when we were jet flyin in the 80s/90s? You guys are out of your minds sometimes. It helps to have a guy like Knight or T Boone who irrationally throw money at college sports but not necessary.

If any super wealthy benefactors had an interest, they would have materialized by now.

The only reason it works with Phil Knight is because it's in essence an advertising expense (that's tax deductible!) and a mutual win-win for Nike and Oregon athletics.

If it came directly from Phil Knight, then no, it's not a tax deduction for advertising expense. lol. It was probably deemed a charitable gift, but even then, there are limitations to deductibility.

I never said they were bad people. I just said they seem like they don't have the energy passion or don't care to have the energy passion of the like that of the 311 heaven crew or many of us in the 300 levels, or anybody/where else in the carrier dome (or nosebleeds)

There is and has long been a stereotype of that crowd.

Yet, they spend more money on the program via their expensive suites and seats than you and your crowd.

The landscape of college football has changed drastically since that time, when we landed recruits based on our programs history, prestige, and the unique recruiting tool that the dome was at that time. The dome is no longer a recruiting tool, and our prestige is only non existent at this point. Our last time ranked was in 2001. That's 13 years ago. Ancient history to an 18 year old who was 5 at the time, and considers the McNabb era "the old days" Any recruit worth their salt wants to play out west, or down south in a power 5, with the exception being Ohio State. We need to take a different approach now.

Dennis Crowley could be someone too. I imagine Foresquare has made a good amount of money. They could foresquare the hell out of Syracuse facilities.

Not so sure about Crowley/Foursquare. My brother (Cuse grad) was one of their first employees and that whole company is funded with venture capital/private equity money. They still barely turn any revenue.

If they end up getting sold to someone or going public down the road, then would be the time to go after him (and I would line my brother up for sure). Unfortunately, he is not a big football fan. Cool dude though.

Is Arthur Rock still alive? Dennis Crowley could be someone too. I imagine Foresquare has made a good amount of money. They could foresquare the hell out of Syracuse facilities.

Al-Waleed bin Talal also has a net worth of a about 30 billion. Can't he spart some? haha
Arthur Rock is still alive and I thought of him too. I think we missed the boat with guys like Al Davis or Dick Clark. I might say Costas, but I assume he needs to maintain his neutrality. David Falk?

A relevant cuse team is good for the American economy...Joe Biden...do you have any thoughts on that?

Yeah, it definitely is.

There's nothing inherrently noble or passionate about those in the 300 sections. I've watched plenty of games up there. It can be dead as a doornail sometimes.

Our chance was Al Davis. That ship has sailed though I believe.

I don't think Davis had the kind of money we're talking about here.

Neither do SU "celebs".

The comp is Phil Knight and T Boone Pickens. These guys are billionaires.

I don't expect any SU alum to step up in that manner. There aren't that many sugar daddies of that magnitude, really. I know we could do a MUCH better job fundraising, but there are many more well versed in our short comings there than me.

The sport has changed since the 80's and 90's. Money rules in today's era. Back in those days you could get by as a private school with a smaller budget. In today's era a bankroll behind you is a huge boost to a program. Not having one makes it a tougher hill to climb. Much tougher

Has Rock ever donated to SU for a large, naming-rights type of project? I see on his Wikipedia page that he gave $25M to Harvard for a business-related center.

In general I had not heard of most of these folks, so it's good to learn about them. (I did not attend SU so have not researched the alumni tree)

Will my gifts to Athletics still be tax deductible?
Gifts and payments to Syracuse Athletics are deductible according to the maximum amount allowed by the Internal Revenue Service. We encourage you to review your charitable giving plans with your tax advisor.

The boxes are more often owned by companies (some not though) but the a good chunk of the courtside seats are owned by people. Maybe some of them (the horseradish guy or the metro mattress guy) put them through their companies - but they are at most of the games.
