Pitino shuts down HS recruiting at St. John's

That is because they are stuck in the way they have done things and what has worked for them for years and unwilling to change and adapt. This is why the ACC has fallen off all the old head coaches have retired and the entire league has fallen off because the old-school way of doing things both on and off the court just doesn't work anymore (many fans still cant accept that).

SEC not only started spending money on players but also on coaches. They have the highest paid coaches they have the biggest NIL's because they were prepared because of football. While everyone else was way behind because I guess they didn't think it would impact Basketball as much.
Good point. Coaches in the SEC are miles ahead of what exists in the ACC.

17 year old— “Gee, I would love to go to my dream school of St John’s and play in Madison square garden, like all timers Chris Mullin and Mark Jackson!”

Pitino—“Sorry, we are looking for 24 year old transfers. See you in 6 years.”

Rick Pitino says he will not be recruiting high school players this year to replace those experienced players he's losing. He says you need older, experienced players to win and you won't win relying on freshmen to play key roles unless they are the top top guys like Cooper Flagg. He will be bringing in players from the portal. In his words ... there is no more in home recruiting visits only NIL negotiations. Great article.
thats why red is able to get "5 stars" now ...its fools gold bc theres no comittment and you risk being a feeder program

It's a lot more than that. When Alabama played at UNC, UNC was shocked when Alabama informed them that they had 17 staff members. During the game, Alabama was breaking down film for the coaches on the floor. UNC found they were way behind.

Marquette is 16th in the country with homegrown talent.

There's more than one way to do this. Think of it like MLB. Yeah, the most successful teams will buy their players. Not everyone will be able to do that. We need to be somewhere in the middle. I don't think there's any reason FOR US to go after the Freeman types in the future. Unless it's a generational Flagg type, look at Rutgers at the best example, the Frosh alone don't win. Get your program type freshman and build them up.

It’s professional sports now. Sponsored by universities. The sooner everyone understands that the better. Sadly I don’t think SU fully understand it yet.

Correct I dont think it is just Syracuse either it is like the entire ACC.

Aside from Duke, and maybe a couple others, that’s right. Hoops in particular is straight up pro sports now.

I agree there are different ways to do this but the common denominator is good coaching and Syracuse is way behind in that regard. Marquette/Smart recruits specific types of players and talents to fit their systems and that is what works.

For us to work that way we can't have our current coach with the roll the ball out their philosophy that old school type philosophy doesn't work in modern basketball unless you are able to severely out talent the other team.

Rick should have been our coach
Nah, I don’t care how much success he has at St John’s. I’m not upset we don’t have him because what’s next when he inevitably retires or shows decline. Coach Jim Larranaga was in the final four two seasons ago. Syracuse can still take the L on the continuity hire right now and get a coach who is a disciple of a modern basketball system this offseason.

Regarding the philosophy, it’s why we actually have a more complete roster this season than last season if we had a good offensive and defensive system in place. We have size, rebounding, guys who can shoot with their feet set. It’s becoming more clearer that our 20 win season under Autry last season was not that we had a better offensive and defensive system, but that we had Copeland, Mintz, and Starling (we still have him, but gets so much more attention as the only one who can improvise) who could improvise and override whatever system we were trying to run and Maliq Brown on defense who had a special ability of poking balls causing turnovers. We need both to play like the top 10 program of all time that we’re supposed to be.

This is very convenient for him as it allows for more hours recruiting at night

I'm sure that's a factor as is the overall dough these SEC programs are willing to spend. But most importantly they got dudes coaching on the sidelines. Pearl, Oats, Buzz Williams, Chris Beard to name a few. ACC can't come close and they (SEC) win both ways - recruiting HS guys and through the portal.

If a portal player is interested in SJU and SU, we know who will win the bidding. SU couldn’t come close to matching SJU offer to Kadary Richmond. It doesn’t matter who’s coaching.

I think Nate Oats has been on the cutting edge for a while. I'd bet my mortgage that Alabama didn't tell Oats he needed these staff, but Oats telling Alabama that he needed those staff. He found a home at a school that had the resources, boosters, and compliance stuff figured out and he had the basketball stuff figured out.

It will not be the same for every kid it isn't always going to be 100% about the money. Winning, development, NBA potential, and NIL will all be a part of the package going forward. True Impact players with NBA dreams just aren't going to pick the team that will cut them the biggest check.
