They werent ready for this game. Could tell from the first couple minutes. Tentative, passing up open shots, missing badly on the shots they took. Oh well, still a great season.

You're worse than the people that leave the Dome early. Come on man. You're better than that.

Lol we aren't scared we're not very good and don't have a game plan on offense

We're in the elite 8. We're good, just not ready for this big a game. G barely drawing iron on his jumpers and not close on his 2 fts. In this type of game you need to come out like gangbusters, we did the opposite.

Its just a terrible matchup.

Oh well. Is what it is

By far. Team that is great at man d, owns us lately, and knows our style.

Keys were:
1. Don't let them build a lead because their style just runs clock and makes it feel insurmountable
2. Needed threes and limit theirs

We didn't do either at all.

The great thing about these threads is when you're wrong, they're hilarious reads the day after as you continue to relive the comeback.

We can tease each other for them, but not a 'Cuse fan in the world truly expected to win down 16 early in the second half. Doesn't mean we gave up, or stopped hoping, but I'm sure those of you who didn't post on here or call "Game!" in the chat thread did it in your head. Then you keep watching on the (apparently 3% according to FiveThirtyEight) chance that the miracle will happen and you can gladly eat some crow afterward.

Nothing beats the calls to bench Malachi or for him to stop shooting in the game thread, though.

Just FYI, if we're down big to UNC, every one of you better be posting the exact same negative stuff. I want calls to bench everyone, fire JB, stop everyone from shooting. It's apparently good luck and it's fun to read after we win.

The thing is, we had the early lead like 10-4 or something. So the idea that we were scared from the opening tip didn't make sense to me.

To me, the unfortunate scenario was we caught them tight to start and that after the nerves settled the game would go to form. They were/are a very good number 1 seed for a reason.

Wasn't that we were scared. I was saying in the game thread that this was on Boeheim. He admitted in the postgame presser it was on him. Players not in position to make plays. He changed that by not setting ball screens in second half so we weren't bringing a second defender. It worked. Why he's in the HOF and in a 5th FF

This is the exact strategy I took when talking to my buddy. Like when we went to the press and switched up the D, I switched rooting styles. I went into a subdued, hypo pessimist mode and it worked!

Interesting observation. Seemed like we were hedged out to almost half-court a lot in the first half, which in the end just translates to wasted energy.

I made a lot of criticisms of Boeheim in the game thread about our style of play vs the Virginia's and Pitt's of the world, which I do think were valid. What I did not account for was JB actually making changes on both sides of the ball. The away from ball screens and press were fantastic adjustments. Ones that I hope he employs for the rest of his coaching career and Hop continues.

I've been saying for a long time that I'm fine with the 2-3 zone and recruiting for it but we need an alternate defense and the press is just that. It's something that should be woven into our defensive identity from here on out, as a program. We always have the athletes, allow them to be athletes for 10-15 minutes per game going full court.

My thinking was this was going to be just like the Gone-zaga game at the end. But I had no idea what was actually going to happen. Even when we were down by 15 a couple of people posted "game over". I was thinking "oh well, maybe." And then Malachi happened. Just unbelievable! I still can't believe it. Maybe by Thursday or Friday I will begin to accept we actually won yesterday against UVA!

My issues had nothing to do with the players (outside of Richardson, who just wasn't making shots he can make and driving with little purpose other than to over-exaggerate contact, btw again, you're welcome for my posts to ignite him), but everything to do with getting shots. We finally got shots because we stopped running the same high screen that led to crazy hedges by UVA all half. Boeheim adjusted, and even admitted fault with that gameplan.

I'll take some credit here too. :)

Yep, he went with a strategy that was unlikely to work, it didn't work, he adjusted to something that did work. Credit to the coach (players too).

The question for next winter: will we try to run our offense off high ball screens against UVa?

He's got a history of playing possum, which makes for some interesting/frustrating exciting games. Though Boeheim's an aggressive competitor, he's content to apply an unsuccessful scheme to set up an in-game adjustment that he thinks his counterpart won't be able to match. Not sure if this was the deliberate plan last night, but it worked out great. Interesting to see if he tries something similar next season.
