Apologize for the ramble, but this loss... I mean win... really irked me. I was so fired up for this season, and while I still think we can recover to go back to a bowl, I am not as optimistic as I once was and I think I know why.
One of the things that pundits like to say about a coach is that a guy that relates to his players is a "player's coach." The kids really want to play for them, and will do anything it takes to get the task accomplished.
GRob was a "player's coach." And while I don't think he's at GRob's level, Shafer is a "player's coach" too.
We have seen more discipline off the field - at least that has been publicized, I think - since Shafer took over. But on the field, our teams are super undisciplined. Both with silly penalties and boneheaded plays.
How many times did we lose contain tonight? How many poor angles were taken to a ball carrier? And the punt return TD - which not many people are talking about - was because players didn't keep their lanes and were flying straight toward the ball trying to be the hero.
Maybe I'm reading into this way more than I should, but I truly believe that there needs to be more of an accountability. During preseason, we had A LOT of "good practices" in a row, according to Shafer. The only one that wasn't was the second one I believe. Maybe it's coachspeak for the media. Or maybe it's someone who gives his players a little too much leeway? Or maybe we just have bad players, I really don't know.
