Henninger destroyed -M’s perfect season and title hopes in a 44-14 domination. But CBA answered them by crushing Liverpool 61-28.Romeo Collier passed for four TDs and ran for another for Henninger. Keenan Scott caught 3 of those passes from 42, 24 and 43 yards out. Meanwhile the powerful -M offense was stymied, giving the ball over on downs 5 times, once on the Black Knight’s one yard line after an opening interception. CBA broke a 14-14 tie after one quarter by blitizing the Warriors 27-0 in the second and 13-0 in the thirdCoaxch Joe Casimento said “We have a huge offense that can do a lot of things.” Quarterback J.R. Zazzara passed for four touchdowns, one off a fake punt. He also ran for two scores. DeShawn Salter rushed for 218 yards and two scores while Andre Dowdll recutrned a punt 56 yards for another score. .
The next round:
#2 Christian Brothers Academy 9-0 (422-128, New York State Sports Writer’s Association #2, Post Standard Large Schools #1 Max Preps 4/425, 9 section, 1 state titles)
Vs. #4 Henninger 7-2 (262-146, NYSSWA #22, PSLS #2, MP 15/1175, 6 section titles)
CBA beat Henninger 33-20 on 10/12
Comment: I keep thinking that CBA’s next opponent is the one that could give them trouble. Maybe I’ll be right this time. But the bothers will rule the roost with probably the best Section 3 team since they last won the state title nine years ago.
CLASS A
Indian River beat Jamesville-Dewitt 31-14 and Carthage upset ESM 43-36. Dustin Sharritt and Denzel Barnes both ran for two scores for the Indians. “This was one of the greatest football games that I have ever been a part of,” said an emotional Carthage head coach Sam Millich. Jose Sanchez of ESM had run for 210 yards and three TDs and caught a pass for a fourth but Carthage quarterback Bailey Wilkinson ran for 236 yards and four scores, the last from 20 yards out to put his team ahead for good. The Spartans returned the kickoff to midfield but a desperation 25 yard pass on the game’s final play was knocked away by a Comet defender.
The next round:
#1 Indian River 8-1 (292-118, NYSSWA #14, PSLS #3, MP 53/2998, 1 section 3 title)
Vs. #3 Carthage 8-1 (289-167, NYSSWA #17, PSLS #5, MP 88/3927, 2 section titles)
Indian River beat Carthage 48-12 on 10/11
Comment: The Comets beat a strong ESM team in a classic game to get here but will they have anything left? Indian River is likely the better team anyway, as they proved the last time they met.
CLASS B
Oneida upset Homer 31-9. Cazenovia buried Marcellus 63-18. Oneida blew open a close game with a 19 point fourth quarter. Dylan Cafalone ran for 175 yards and 2 scores for the winners. Cazenovia had won a wild one the first time they played Marcellus, 43-35 but had no trouble this time, scoring twice in each of the first three quarters and three more time in the fourth. Kevin Hopsiker ran for four scores and threw for another for the Lakers.
The next round:
#2 Cazenovia 9-0 (385-124, NYSSWA #4, Post Standard Small Schools #1, MP 13/1065, 8 section titles)
Vs. #4 Oneida 7-1 (285-97, NYSSWA #8, PSSC #2, MP 27/1776, 3 section titles )
Cazenovia beat Oneida 26-0 on 10/5.
Comment: It was reported on the news that Oneida, who lost that 10/5 game on a muddy field at Cazenovia, were looking forward to taking on the Lakers in a dry Carrier Dome- and that the Lakers, (who Max Preps has rated the #2 team in the section behind CBA, despite being a Class B team), had heard than and we just as anxious to have at the Indians in the Dome themselves, so this should be interesting.
CLASS C
General Brown outlasted Utica Notre Dame 35-33. Watertown IHC nipped Thousand Island 13-12. Zach and Joe Pitre scored 5TDs between them for General Brown, whos topped a two point conversion attempt in the final minute to advance. Immaculate Heart had surprising trouble with Thousand Islands, scoring with a minute to go and taking the lead on the extra point, which is far from automatic in high school ball.
The next round:
#3 Watertown Immaculate Heart 9-0 (308-71, NYSSWA #9, PSSC #3, MP 73/3438, 1 section title)
Vs. #5 General Brown 8-1 (283-142, NYSSWA #11, PSSC #5, MP 100/4271, 5 section titles)
Watertown IHC beat General Brown 28-26 on 10/18.
Comment: Watertown’s win over the Lions was probably the best section 3 game of the regular season. Will this game be as good?
CLASS D
Defending champ Sandy Creek topped perennial power Dolgeville 24-12 while Herkimer beat Westmoreland 29-20. Tyler Swartout scored three times for Sandy Creek, who despite a loss to Westmoreland look like they may be better than last year’s first ever sectional champions. Austin Mills scored three times and picked off three passes for Herkimer. Who does he think he is- Diamond Ferri?
The next round:
#3 Herkimer 8-1 (330-85, NYSSWA #10, PSSC #7, MP 121/5128, 4 section titles)
Vs. #5 Sandy Creek 8-1 (356-99, NYSSWA #7, PSSC #6, MP 86/3863, 1 section title)
Comment: Two very strong teams, both on a roll. Each lost only to the other’s semi-final opponents. This one could go either way. It should be fun.
