THE FINALS
CLASS AA
Aquinas institute of Rochester won a record 7th State title, beating Saratoga Springs 44-19. The game wasn’t that close. The Little Irish scored all of their 44 points before the Blue Streaks streaked into the end zone, including a 21-0 first quarter lead.

CLASS A
In the wildest game of the day- and maybe ever, Buffalo South Park won its first ever title over Our Lady of Lourdes 49-46. Amazingly, the first quarter was scoreless. The Sparks sparkled in the second, scoring on passes of 40 and 53 yards and a 63 yard run to take a 22-6 halftime lead. But they couldn’t puill away in the second half. Lourdes pulled to within 29-26, fell behind 43-32, then scored two more TDs to make it 43-40. South Park answered back as Tyree Brown scored on a 42-yard run with 9:09 left to put South Park up 49-40. Luke Timm scored on a 7-yard reception with 2:53 left to make it 49-46. But South Park was able to run out the clock in their las tpossession.

CLASS B
The Cazenovia Lakers won their first ever state title, (they’d only won one state playoff game in their history before this year), and Section 3’s first ever Class B champion. Section 3 has now won ever classification in the state tournament, Indian River having become our first Class A titlist last year. It looked bad Early against Section 2’s Schuylerville, who opened with long drive into Laker territory, got held on downs, (they had no kicker at all, which proved critical) but immediately got the ball back on a fumbled hand-off and drove in to score. They held the Lakers, 3 and out and drove down for a second score. But they couldn’t covert on their tries for conversions and were ahead only 12-0 when the Lakers got their passing game going. They forged a 15-12 lead when Schuylerville responded with a rare pass paly of their own, a 33 yard touchdown strike on the last play of the half. Jake Shaffner’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Paul McLaughlin and Cole Willard’s extra point with 8:16 left in the third quarter gave Cazenovia a 22-19 lead that would hold, despite a late interception that set up a final scoring attempt for the Black Horse. Shaffner snuffed that out with a sack by Shaffner of his counter-part Will Griffin.

Chenango Forks won their third straight state Class C title by sticking their forks in the Greenwich Witches, 42-7. The Blue Devils blew out to a 21-0 first half lead, shrugged off a Greenwich score just before the half and marched to touchdowns in their first three possessions of the second half.

Chenango Forks final line: 12-1 (460-148) NYSSWA #1 3/314 States: 26-9 with 54 titles
Interesting that MaxPreps rates a Class C team the third best team in the state, ahead of Class B’s Cazenovia and Class A’s South Park, another indication that there isn’t a huge difference between the classifications.
CLASS D
Tioga after losing in the semis four years in a row broke through to win their first ever state championship on Jesse Manuel’s 33 yard touchdown run with 16 seconds left in the game. The Tigers had been trying to set up a game winning field goal attempt but the waves parted and Manuel bolted to the end zone to win it. They’d fallen behind 0-14 in the first period. They got it back to 12-14 by the half and took an 18-14 lead in the third period. It was back and forth after that as “Ticonderoga reclaimed a 20-18 lead with 8:47 remaining”. Tioga went back ahead 26-20 and the Sentinels tied it up at 26, setting up Manuel’s closing heroics. Jesse wound up with 215 yards rushing and a Section 4 record 2,866 for the season. He’s second all time in the state for his career behind Onondaga’s Mike Hart with 8,584 rushing yards.
