I'm generally on the laissez faire side of message boards--I don't generally get off topic, but I don't mind when others do. That said, I do understand how it's annoying to people though and I'm fine with trying to keep our board focused...

I think it might be helpful if it was spelled out a little more clearly what's off topic and what is ok. Is speculating endlessly about potential lineups with said recruit off topic? Is arguing over whether a poster's inside information on said recruit is valid "off-topic"? Is talking about our chances to win a national championship if said recruit commits off-topic? Is using cultural references to brainstorm potential nicknames for said recruit based on his last name off topic? Obviously there's no definite line, but I think it's clear from reading this board that there's some disagreement on what off-topic itself means.

Maybe if admins/staff hammered out what they want to see on the board, it would make it easier for those like myself who want to contribute to making it a good place for both those who check it every hour, and those who check it every few days. It might also help adjust the expectations of us community members as well.

What's the SCOTUS quote on pornography? "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it."

Same here. It require far more self moderation than moderation on our end, which is far easier said, than done.

I can't point to the reply that starts a death spiral, but I know when a thread is heading there.

To be honest I thought the 2nd AW3 thread pretty much stayed on topic. Although given the train wreck the first one became I understand a shirt leash.

But why was it deleted?
I think the point of this thread is saying that one too got too far off topic. Don't really agree with that sentiment but I'm not the one that has to deal with all the admin stuff they do.

I'm sure the admins had very valid reasons for deleting the new AW3 thread but there didn't seem to be anything off topic. Maybe people were posting sensitive info?

So people who aren't part of this board are the reason for deleting a thread?

See the "flag as irrelevant" option in the screen capture below?

Almost everyone who finds this sight via a search engine and search engine alert, leaves immediately, and flags the alert as irrelevant.

I created a private board for the nonsense, but I'm tired of seeing more and more new visitors leave after reading one page of a post. The avg time spent here for new visitors used to be 14 minutes. Now it's a fraction of that time.

Here's the private board, hidden from robots and unregistered users. Have at it there, but our recruiting boards aren't going to be dragged down any further.

Feel free to share, and if it's used, I'll appoint a separate moderator for that private board.

Has the private board been made yet? color me interested.

I had been under the impression only board members could access the recruiting board - that visitors could only go as "deep" as the basketball board

Nope. That's the pay side you're thinking of.

Boards that are a violation of my agreement with advertisers, and or are an embarrassment to the site, are only accessible to registered users.

Wait, so does that open the floodgates to all the irrelevancy one could wish for in the AW3 thread?

Knock your freakin' socks off. Nobody sees it unless they bookmark the page, and want to enter. A moderator will be picked from the small pool of reasonable posters in the forum.

My only real goal is to clean up the recruiting boards. At one time the recruiting threads were the biggest reason people visited.

Here's a graph worth looking at. Not a very good trend.
