This season sucked but if I recall Shafer took over a team last year that lost its QB, both WRs, star OL, best playmaker in the secondary, jumped to a better conference and got to a bowl and won it. When did GROB ever get close to a bowl or 7 wins? People also act as if Marrone left HCSS the second coming of the 2001 Miami Hurricanes. Offensively he left the guy with Hunt, Loeb and Kinder at QB and a whole lot of nothing at WR. I am not thrilled with how things went down this year and another year like it next year will have me asking for a new HC too. In the meantime the guy deserves another year and he deserves the decency of not being compared to the worst coach I have seen in 40 years of watching football

Really more than just watching football. Not to pile on but he was a disaster at every part of coaching (recruiting wasn't a disaster but still wasn't where it needed to be). G-rob was the worst coach I have ever seen at any level.

Don't need to compare him to Grob. We are what our record says we are.

But I do enjoy the 100s of posts that have been made saying at least we're better than the Grob years. Low bar. We almost deserve this because people have such low expectations.

I confess, I said in the chat room today that our offense resembled GRob's in ineptness.

I do agree we aren't anywhere near the total futility of those painful years...yet

2005 ... 257.9 yards per game
2014 ... 329.3 yards per game

Couple more games, we could have caught 'em...

How do we compare against his 3 win season?

2006 ... 264.2 yds (4-8)

I started writing about how much we actually resemble a GRob team but I am tired of it, we'll just have to wait nine long months to see if HCSS is worth anything to the long term success of this program. Not long into next season we should know and get that coaching carousel revved up.

i wonder why people have such low expectations? i am not commenting about grob, but all in all our coaching is suspect and i still question all our injuries, not just this year either. with all the talk of our hard nosed football, rutgers plays it. it pains me to see that, as we are just getting back into nj (which we need) and we pull off a season like this with a suspect coaching staff. i am greatly concerned about holding our moderately decent recruiting class together . i speak for myself, as a loooooong time fan, my interest and support has waned. sick and tired of the koolaid. i do appreciate the defense the hardnosed part of our team--- and the ones who have a right to be pissed off.

Grob was 10-37.

If we lose our next 22 games, then Shafer is Grob bad. That's how bad it was.

But this was some kind of awful.

He has one year to right the ship, IMO.

I've yet to see how fans expectations affect the play on the field. It's the same as blaming the uniforms. Assigning blame to mythical football elves will be next.

It's karma. And nobody blamed the play on the field on fan expectations. But fan expectations can play a role in the programs expectations.

We had 128 yards of total offense yesterday. If the Maryland game which feels like 2 years ago and the over 600 yards offense were taken out our offensive yard production numbers would be very close to GRob bad.

Go watch the PC after the Louisville game. That was GRob talking.
We are fans we all support the program we all want the program to succeed. Some of us are crabby and can be annoying, but give the opinions that may not be easy to read but are fair. We have plenty of idealists and are positive having realists balance things out when we are a bad football team is fair.

This season was Greg Robinson level bad.

Year 2 for each coach.

PPG
Grob 17.4
Shafer 17.1

Wins
Grob 4
Shafer 3

Shafer had as many wins after year two as G-Rob had in 4 years. That's the comparison. And when did G-Rob win a bowl game?

Coach Shafer is our Coach Spaziani. It took BC year 3 to start going down.
Spaz went to bowl games years 1 and 2 won 13 games those years and then years 3 and 4 only won 6 games total.

It just stinks because it has been 2 years and our offense has gone way down and their is no reason to believe it will get better next year with the same coaching staff. If we had any reason to believe SS will disband the band and make changes its one thing, but outside of McDonald its doubtful any coaches will move on.

Just comparing this season. Why do you want to try to define my comparison? This year is this year and we are what our record says we are.

There has been some inflation in avg yardage so part of that is just era. Grob was worse but this team was 115th in offense.

Actually we're 112th in offense this season (as of this morning). Michigan was 111th. Penn State was 114th.

GRob did finish 115th in 2005.

People who say that Shafer is better than GRob are only responding to the claim that this is like having GRob. No one is pegging the bar at GRob so stop with the nonsense about "low expectations".

You could search and find 100s of posts over the past several years comparing a year or the program to the Grob days. So it's a fact people have low expectations.
