Podcast from Georgia perspective, breaking down Fran Brown -- Mike McCallister

Basically what I got out of that is Brown is gonna be a amazing coach but not here. This is just to get his feet wet. Thats how i took it

Just listened to it. Only about 20 minutes long. Really good listen. Particularly liked the part about the defensive scheming suggestions that he brought to the staff ahead of his first game there.

I think we’ll have a big $$$ decision to make in 3 years ala Dino.

Or this experiment didn’t work out and we’re back to where we are right now, just hopefully with a much upgraded roster.

The big question is what scheme he will try to run with a roster built for the 3-3-5 in a location where we have struggled to find bodies that match our scheme for 10+ yrs.

Really really really good Georgia perspective

If he doesn’t get it done here he’s back on the hamster wheel. How do you figure if he’s bad here he gets elevated?

I imagine there’s a lot to like about the 335 scheme from a DB perspective. Also easier to recruit. If we go to a more traditional 34 or 43 then we will need to recruit/portal several more big bodies on the d line immediately. I can’t imagine that would be an easy transition in his first year.

Yeah that’s the GRob scenario. Let’s completely change our system without having the personnel to run it. Always works out well

Gergs offense was never going to work
I am very curious who the OC is. If he's any good, he'll leave, but so will Brown

He’s gotta do well enough here to be able to jump to a better job - if he does that and moves on in three years, I can live with that since we’ll be in a much better place than we are now.

Quick summary of some key details:

  • Brown [from the Georgia perspective] was a rising star
  • His agent only reps head coaches, but represented Brown because he is recognized as being so high potential
  • He is an ace recruiter -- would succeed no matter where he is, no matter what the level
  • He prefers playing a 4-2-5 defense

Listening to a blogger from Georgia describing the defensive scheme in such detail makes you realize how crazy football is down south. I don't think I've ever heard a Syracuse Podcaster go into that much detail.

Also the Jimmy Sexton thing is interesting. Seems like we should expect 3/4 years and then him to bounce. Which all things considered it is what it is.

It’s 3/4 years always and JW knew that

It’s either 3/4 years and we are VERY successful and winning and will have a higher flow of $$$

Or its 3/4 years we’re not successful and brown will be fired and we will try the process again

I love that. I think our defense last year when White creeped guys (McDonald/Linton) up into this set we were at our best. Maybe misremembering but I didn't see much of that look from Long this year.

True.

When Jake C hired Coach Mac, he did it because MacPherson's UMass teams ran a pro-style offense - they threw the ball.

Jake wanted to bring a passing offense to the Dome.

After four years, Coach Mac figured out that he was never going to get the kind of personnel needed to run a pro-style offense.

He brought George DeLeone to Syracuse for the purpose of installing an option offense. An offense similar to the option offense that Coach Maloney ran.

That is the lesson of this program.

I suspect that we will probably never have the personnel needed to run a traditional pass-oriented offense.

I suspect that we will probably need to run a gimmick offense - like the "freeze option" or the Wildcat offense that worked pretty well this season.

And that's also fine, because that's likely the timeframe when Brown can have the most influence on the portal.

Well Dino learned the same lesson. 4 years too late.

Bad take. He just didn't recruit well enough at the skill positions. We were a QB and a couple good WRs from being really effective.
