Poetry in Motion...

I went to his first game in the Dome...an exhibition game against Marathon Oil. I remember it like it was yesterday: I was 14 years old and was incredibly excited to see Anthony Harris and the local kid...Z Sims (Z would redshirt). I went down to the floor for warmups and saw this guy I hadn't seen before wearing high socks and was intrigued. I can't remember what he did that day but he outshined everyone.

as i reflect on this, i knew there are probably a large number of people reading this who have never seen him play. The guy was like butter. There were so many game walking out of dome where i'd say to my father "moten had a quiet night" and then you'd hear the box score and he'd have 21 and 7. it was like that every single night. Melo was the last one who has come close.

Marathon Oil. Those were the days.

My frosh year watched the Arkansas game from a day hall common room. Gutted. Remember that first game seeing him at Manley vs GW .

He contributed to me going to Syracuse. Big games vs Kentucky my senior year in hs sealed the deal.

Loved his game.

I won’t say I knew him, but I met him a bunch when we were in school. He was quiet, reserved, and he seemed to be OK engaging folks in conversation. My first interaction was my freshman year (I believe his sophomore). As an architect, I often ate in Shaw. Often breakfast after a all-nighter. Most of the athletes also ate there because they would check in with team assistants after lifting and before class. Mo was walking out with his roommates (Graves and I believe Al Wooten). Mo pulled me aside and complimented my coat. I am amazed I didn’t drop my tray. I sat next to his mom for a few basketball games, and after the games, Bernie would let us wait in the hall outside the locker room (could hear JB light the team up in rage from time to time, not the most comfortable place to be). When Mo walked out, his mom was so glad to see him and excited to introduce us to him. He rolled his eyes and gave us a bit of a stare. I later learned he was very protective of his mother. Later, through my own roommates, I would have lunch with him (and others) once in a while at Goldstein. He loved to talk about football, and his home town team the Redskins. He was great to watch. Clutch gene all the way. He was also a nice guy.

I literally bought a vintage cursive script jersey of him over the summer.

I was born in 1982, so I was a bit too young to be emotionally attached to our players from the 80s. The Autry/Moten/Wallace era is what really began my love affair with SU basketball.

As others have mentioned, there was a coolness to his game (George Gervin-esque) that will perhaps never be replicated here. I'm confident SU will do something special at a game this year to honor his legacy.

I know we hate each other 99% of the time, but for whatever it's worth, the Boneyard has a very kind and respectful thread about him going.

What a great reference! Gervin-esque!
