The other five defendants were described by authorities as fixers. At least two of the defendants, Shane Hennen and Marves Fairley, were also charged in a federal indictment in the Eastern District of New York centered on gambling schemes in the NBA.
Former NBA player Antonio Blakeney was named but not charged in the indictment. The indictment describes Blakeney as being "charged elsewhere."
The scheme, according to the 70-page indictment, began around September
Probably the angriest I’ve ever been after a Syracuse basketball game. We’ve all seen games that were poorly officiated. It was obvious to the naked eye that something more “intentional” was going on against OSU…The case for fixing games against Syracuse in the NCAA tournament starts and ends with the 2012 game vs Ohio St. Lots of suspicion the ncaa did not want the Bernie Fine storyline advancing to the FF.
Was at the game and knew it was bad. I didn't know how bad until we get back to relatives in Boston who are Kansas grads/fans who dislike Cuse. Even they said we got reamed . Like bad.Probably the angriest I’ve ever been after a Syracuse basketball game. We’ve all seen games that were poorly officiated. There’s like a 50 year old law in New York st still on the books that you can’t gamble on New York college teams back from the old mob days in the late 70’s for exactly that reason.Just asking, not justifying anything: What does the NCAA do if the players testify that their lives were threatened, or the lives of their families were threatened if they didn't throw the games?

If you go into a New York casino I don’t think you can drop a bet on Cuse or St. John’s still. I tried a few years ago and it blocked the bet. Not sure if online spotsbooks like draftkings and fanduel got around that somehow.
Here’s some footage of the game. Watch the kid not play defense on the 4th play. WILD
i watch the games and know there isnt always a level playing field reffing wise - still interesting to see if a team can overcome it or not - it doesnt ruin the drama - but it definitely makes it less compelling - and makes my love of the sport diminishedI’ve definitely said this on the board before so I’m going to sound like a broken record. But I feel so strongly about it:
In the Sweet 16 game against Gonzaga, Trevor Cooney being called “out of bounds” on the baseline by the referee at mid court screams foul play to me. There is absolutely no way that referee could’ve seen him step out, even if his toe had touched the line. For him to blow his whistle when the baseline ref didn’t call it is insane.
Thank god Syracuse went on to win that game. I’m not one to complain about officials but that seemed so crooked I would still be losing sleep over it had they lost.
i dont doubt it at all - i remember being pissed watching that game - but think of the implications of what youre saying - ncaa makes it clear to officials what they want to happen and officials get it done. i think this kinda thing is far from a one off - i think its standard operating procedure, sadly.I was told by a staff member at the time that it was no storyline. It was more than smoke. The rumblings were out there, and our people found things out after the fact. Syracuse wasn’t going to that Final Four if the NCAA had anything to say about it. Exactly as you stated, the NCAA wanted no part of the Bernie Fine story.
We should have just played Fab and gone all the way.
100% cardiac. I agree It drives me crazy. Watching Duke I sit here thinking how is Cam Boozer playing 40 mins a game as a freshman from game 1 against other top 10 competition at 18 years old.i watch the games and know there isnt always a level playing field reffing wise - still interesting to see if a team can overcome it or not - it doesnt ruin the drama - but it definitely makes it less compelling - and makes my love of the sport diminished
it particularly bothers me that some schools are classed as "bluebloods" and seem to always benefit from reffing (duke, for example)...and that SU is not one of those schools for whatever reason despite being one of the most popular and winningest programs in ncaabb history. i mean, take that cj fair block that boeheim famously ripped his jacket off over - total hrsht. it wasnt just the call. it was the context of how the game had been called to that point as well.
i;d love to understand why some teams are so shielded and protected ...i honestly just dont get it.
on the surface, i would assume the more popular a team is the more likely they would be to get favorable reffing - bc that would maximize total fan interest - but SU is one of the most popular and doesnt get that treatment at all

i know the refs arent perfect and of course they will miss calls - it does go both ways - but it just seems too convenient that for example...SU starts pulling away up by 10 vs FSU and donnie drives - gets hammered by fsu and no call - game state 100% influenced the no call there - and thats what I HATE...meanwhile FSU is trailing and gets a couple ticky tack calls to their benefit...it didnt necessarily change the final outcome of the game but it definitely changed the margin and in this era of metrics, that matters a lot100% cardiac. In what world does it make sense that he is not getting beat up by the other team or getting in foul trouble himself? It’s exactly what you said, he draws touch fouls all game because he has the blue blood lottery pick tag. At the same time gets away with playing more physical with the other team when he chooses to. Bancot and UNC was another one that played 6 years of college like this but at least you can say he got that from being more experienced and being in better position. There’s no way these Duke 18 year olds should get the league treatment they get from day 1 of college.
Then I sit here watching Donnie back in ACC play with Clemson, GT, and Pitt I watch him get doubled and thrown to the ground multiple times with no whistle. I was just waiting for him to get up hobbled again.
I’m not saying what guy is even more talented just call the whistle evenly.
I was at that game also and I recall the fouls were even more lopsided for OSU until SU had to foul intentionally at the end of the game. Was at the game and knew it was bad. I didn't know how bad until we get back to relatives in Boston who are Kansas grads/fans who dislike Cuse. Even they said we got reamed . Like bad.
Kinda miss the days when you'd hand in paper bets with your guy.I wouldn't chalk up the OSU debacle to some kind of gambling ring. It's silly to be going that far back when it's fairly apparent that legalized gambling on sports has really turned on this spigot.
