4. Syracuse
The Virginia-Syracuse series usually produces fireworks. Neither team has been held under 10 goals since 2015 and only four games this century featured single-digits for one or both, so it’s notable that Syracuse, now 10-3, held UVA to nine in their 14-9 victory.
Riley Figueiras shouldn’t fly under the radar anymore. He’s one of the best defensive defensemen in the country. He marks his guy and that player disappears with little fanfare. Goalie Jimmy McCool was razor sharp, making 15 saves. Luke Rhoa and Wyatt Hottle each tallied hat tricks. Joey Spallina played a shrewd game (2G, 3A) and will likely surpass the SU all-time points record in his next outing. Former player, assistant and head coach John Desko was inducted into the ring of honor and his name will forever hang in the rafters in Central New York. Well deserved.
The Orange’s homefield advantage is significant. Colgate is in the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday at 5 p.m. on ACC Network with Cooper Boardman and Jules Heningburg in the booth.
