As of Week 2, there is no doubt: Syracuse is No. 1.

They proved it the only way that matters, on the field in an 11-9 win vs. Maryland in a 1-2 showdown in front of more than 10,000 people inside the JMA Wireless Dome.

That win, combined with decisive victories in the Orange’s first two contests, make them the unanimous No. 1; no more are four teams receiving first-place votes.

The Terps swap place at No. 2, and Georgetown slides up after topping Penn in the Hoyas’ delayed opening to the season.

North Carolina and Cornell fill out the Top 5, and Princeton drops significantly to 12 after losing to Penn State.

1. Syracuse 440 (22)
2. Maryland 414
3. North Carolina 358
4. Georgetown 347
5. Cornell 343

Sometimes, rankings are pretty straightforward. This week, we have a new No. 1 — and there’s no quibbling about who it should be.

No. 2 Syracuse upended No. 1 Maryland on Friday at the JMA Wireless Dome in front of 10,000-plus fans, and as a result, the Orange are the new No. 1 in the USA Lacrosse Division I Men’s Top 20, presented by CWENCH Hydration. The last time Syracuse was No. 1 was March 7, 2020.

There were significant happenings up and down the Top 20, like Princeton’s precipitous plummet to No. 13 from No. 3 after losing to a Penn State that was coming off a loss of its own to Villanova. Saint Joseph’s then secured its first Top 20 ranking of the season by beating Villanova.

Elsewhere, Richmond and Denver are making noticeable moves, and defending champ Cornell kicked off its title defense with a tight win over UAlbany.

1. Syracuse
2. Maryland
3. Georgetown
4. Cornell
5. Richmond

1. Syracuse

The Orange are 3-0 after beating Maryland for the first time since 2009, snapping a streak of eight-consecutive setbacks to the Terps.

HHH played their most complete, smartest and disciplined game of the Gary Gait coaching era, winning the groundball battle 36-22. They didn’t foul or take bad shots, they didn’t go offsides, didn’t taunt or showboat after scoring goals. They fought. They ran hard. They defended and attacked. Their clock management and situational awareness was upgraded. They just rolled up their sleeves and proved to be the tougher team. They earned it. And their fans loved it.

The close defense and righty point guard Joey Spallina starred. This was Joey’s best performance to date. He was laser focused. He had a low turnover ratio. He shot the ball well. He was a coach on the field. He set his teammates up. He hustled and set the tone by scooping up five grounders. He managed the game and the shot clock. He understood how to attack the Maryland defense. He put it all together on a memorable night in the Dome.

Middie Wyatt Hottle was outstanding early in the game, disrespected by a shorty and no slide. He made the Terps pay.

10,159 fans shelled out $38 a ticket for a general admission seat in the Dome. The place was rocking. The inevitable rematch with Maryland looms in May. So Syracuse must continue to improve, to evolve and move forward. The SU shorties appear upgraded with Jake Spallina, Dante Bowen and Jayden Kittelberger. The young midfielders have enormous upside — Matt McIntee and Bogue Hahn will gain confidence and can run by defenders. Tyler McCarthy nailed a corner and can be a big-time two-way impact player.

Otto begins a six-game road swing at Harvard on Feb. 21. The Orange will face the Crimson, Princeton, Penn, Johns Hopkins, Air Force and Denver during the lengthy road trip.

Success breeds complacency. Beware.

So is Inside lacrosse just not gonna have the rosters or stats of players on their website anymore? Mean their old site wasn’t good but least had everything right on hand. Now ya get schedule n that’s it. No player roster no player stats or anything. So they made their website worst while also making it way less informed or any stats.

LacrosseReference Computer Ranking

Let's take stock of where things stand. Below are the top-20 teams in the LacrosseReference Computer rankings.

I am going to include this every time I post these rankings: this is based on an algorithm, so before you get the pitchforks out, remember that you are mad at a computer algorithm, not me personally.

Some more background: the way that the computer rating works is not by looking at last week's ranking and adjusting based on wins and losses. I take the Strength-of-Record rankings and add a small touch of the LaxElo program strength ratings.

The result is a combination of how good the program is and how impressive they've been this year. As more and more games are played, the balance tips more and more towards the current season's Strength-of-Record and the returning production/transfer numbers are gradually removed. Like anything algorithmic, it's not perfect. But I think it does a good job of taking all my modeling and putting it into the traditional media poll structure.

(I'm also showing the current RPI ranking, although that is not a part of the computer ranking algorithm.)

The Highlights

Moving In:
  • Denver is in this week after a 8 - 7 victory over Utah; they'll look to keep the momentum going on Saturday when they'll be heavy underdogs against Cornell (11% WP)
  • Sacred Heart is in this week after a 14 - 10 victory over Wagner and a 15 - 11 victory over Holy Cross; they play next on Wednesday when they'll be neck-and-neck with Fairfield (54% WP)
  • Villanova; they are back at it on Saturday when they'll be slight underdogs against Rutgers (35% WP)
Moving Out:
  • Michigan did have a 11 - 7 victory over Detroit, but they are out this week after a 14 - 13 loss to Lehigh; they'll look to bounce back on Saturday when they'll be slight underdogs against Army (33% WP)
  • Towson did have a 12 - 8 victory over Navy, but they are out this week after a 13 - 11 loss to Johns Hopkins; they'll be back at it on Friday when they'll be neck-and-neck with Saint Joseph's (46% WP)
  • Dartmouth is out this week after a 13 - 5 loss to Boston U; their next chance will be on Saturday when they'll be slight favorites against Vermont (61% WP)
Moving Up:
  • Ohio State is up 4 spots this week after a 14 - 9 victory over Air Force and a 11 - 6 victory over Bellarmine; they'll look to keep the momentum going on Saturday when they'll be heavy favorites against High Point (88% WP)
  • Penn State is up 4 spots this week after a 13 - 7 victory over Princeton; they play next on Saturday when they'll be heavy favorites against Navy (88% WP)
  • Richmond is up 4 spots this week after a 18 - 12 victory over Virginia; they'll have a big chance to keep it rolling with 2 games coming up against Mercer on Monday and Lehigh on Saturday
Moving Down:
  • Thanks to movement around them, Cornell is down 2 spots this week despite their 11 - 10 victory over Albany; they'll look to bounce back on Saturday when they'll be heavy favorites against Denver (89% WP)
  • Maryland is down 5 spots this week after a 11 - 9 loss to Syracuse; they'll be back at it on Saturday when they'll be slight favorites against Princeton (69% WP)
  • Princeton is down 11 spots this week after a 13 - 7 loss to Penn State; their next chance will be on Saturday when they'll be slight underdogs against Maryland (31% WP)
