Postgame Thoughts… Clemson

By no means is it all on Jesse for this to keep happening, but he has to figure out how to not foul out.

He's fouling out so much that it's becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy each game. Refs are looking to call fouls on him.

Again, it's not all on him. He's covering up a lot of defensive deficiencies, but we got to keep him around for the end of the game.

He is so important and so good, we need him to stick around each game.
He got 3 late fouls in 35/seconds. They were all cheap.

Cole came in for Sy because of foul shooting since they would start being aggressive and fouling.
Real toss up. Do you keep the better defense and PG in the game or go to a better foul shooter? I prefer defense unless it is a two-three point game.

Nice win. Yes, "we hit shots," but I thought our passing and movement off the ball was much better, especially in the second half. Buddy missed the 3 from up top badly, but the play leading up to that in the second half was executed to perfection and a thing of beauty.

Great to see some hustle plays, guys diving on the floor, and actually winning 50/50 balls. Onward and upward.

It’s crazy how the ACC is… we really could have 3-4 more wins & be one of the best teams in the conference.

So good to win tonight, breathing some fresh hope into this season. Whether it’s .500+ or even a sliver post season possibilities, I’m with it!

It was a nice win but as expected due to the 9pm start it was a very small crowd. The box score showed a crowd of 15200 and my guess that the actual crowd was half of that number. The days of those 30k crowds are gone for this year as covid is really having an impact. But at least they won !

Yep and should be no problem with that. if Symir was a knockdown free throw shooter he would be in there at the end. I actually think he can be better than he has shown.

Cuse

I agree but the last 2 games he could have been pulled and not fouled out. He had one foul at halftime and I think only 2 heading into final four minutes. He's been better - fouling out in the final minute of games he didn't really need to be out there is progress...I think.

Cole gives you a better rebounding presence as well. Clemson was pretty small and we didn't need them getting any second chance points.

Just don't let Cole dribble or pass the ball. :(

Joe was great last night. Give credit where it is due. I like the three guard lineup a lot. Play the hot hand at the w/Jessie.

Our forwards are a mess anyway.
Agree. This is what the City Rocks did and how they made Peach Jam. We are subbing Edwards for Stewart.

With how good our Guards shoot the ball, imagine if we would have had one of our talented forwards from earlier years like a Warrick. Would have had free reign to dominate (even more) around the bucket. Our current forwards can't take advantage, especially in crunch time.
Edwards and Girard were excellent tonight. Buddy hit some tough shots and Torrence had his best game of the year.

Great win. We shot lights out and the other team could not keep up. Frankly we do this at times in each game we play. First half was rough as we were up 23-12 and then it was 34-34 (outscored 11-22). If we limit the runs of the other team it would help us. We did that last night by getting Clemson into foul trouble. I think we can do that against UNC and Duke (depth) we would have a shot.

To have a shot at Bubble Watch we need to go 9-4 the rest of the way. Its possible and would put us at 12-8 in the ACC which would be one of our best results since we joined ACC. If we look at our team honestly, we need more consistent offence from Cole. The other 4 starters are known quantity and Cole is the only one that has the biggest upside available to us going forward. We can discuss defense, but we wont get better closing down shooters. However, if Cole gets going with sidestep jumpshot that is at least 50% effective...

Go CUSE.

IMO, best lineup going forward is Symir, Joe, Buddy, Jimmy/Cole/Benny (whomever is playing the best), & Jesse

Joe is literally 46% from 3. We need to get him more shots, period. The D isnt getting better. It's not gonna happen, so lets get Joe cookin', keep Buddy doing what he does, and Jesse gets his. Maybe we win a couple
this team hunts 3s very lazily. they should be shooting way more threes than opponents every game.

i realize a team cannot stay hot for 40 minutes...there will be some lulls...

but this team always seems to have several extended dramatic lulls every game.

91 points is a lot but i feel like the potential is there to score even more.

for instance, at the 12 min mark they had 23 points...then scored about 10 points over the next 10 min.

1 point per min is pretty bad and a 10 min stretch of that is long...to reach 90 points in a game with that is pretty good. too bad it seemed to happen with the bench in the game.

that means the team scored 80 or so in the other 30 minutes...which would equate to 107points/40min...which also included a slow down offense the last 6 minutes or so!

overall, I feel like these lulls tend to happen when the team gets stuck in a rut of poorly conceptualized offensive scheming.

when something is working...like the first 8 minutes of the game...why go away from that?

the offense is pretty good as is...but i feel like it could be even better. i think they should focus on eliminating the lulls and determining why they happen.

to me the iso ball is not as efficient as ball movement and teamwork. jesse and joe are extremely efficient scorers when they get the ball in their spots...

ther shouldnt be a team that stops this offense, like some have already this season.

i have the feeling that this team will be ncaa tourney caliber by the end of the season but the record will not reflect that and they wont get in

This is because Of the lack of bench scoring

Joe and Jesse were amazing. Amazing.

The combined efficiency was astounding.

15 FGAs
38 points
12 boards
6 assists
4 blocks
4 steals

38 points on 15 FGAs. That is incredible. Neither went into double digits in FGAs.

BTW, this isn't to throw shade at Buddy, promise.

Someone has to be the volume guy. I concede this fact. But I do think that if Buddy just relented a few shots a game to these other guys, it would be a good thing.

With last night's crowd in the Dome as sparse as I could ever recall, especially for a conference game, I'd like to give a big shout out to Winter Storm Izzy for being such a great 6th man for us last night. ;):)
The crowd was small. I would say 3000, seriously. But our usher got into 4-5 altercations with men not wearing masks, and he actually kicked 8 “kids” out who were giving him a hard time. Another guy argued with him for a good 5 minutes, turning away and then turning back again to argue some more. Down on the floor I could see a few guys who seemed to be drunk and taunting the ushers with no masks. I think they were tossed as well. 9:00 start time? People liquored up? In the meantime, the guy in front of us who has had his seat for about 35 years refuses to come. His wife is disgusted with him. He missed a good game last night.
