Postgame Thoughts… Duke game 2

Holy smokes- PSA-

Not one person hates JB that is taking part in the multitude of discussions on here. It's just criticism directly related to the performance of the program that continues to dip. It's discussing what is right in front of us all and is not denigrating the obvious successes of the past, the creation of the brand or any of the MANY positives over so many years.

It's about where we are and where we are going and many things aren't working with little evidence of a commitment from JB to change.

What was the talk about 50? My ESPN feed wasn't working for some reason so I was watching on ESPN Deportes and they didn't show any of the sideline interviews.
50 years as SU HC.

It’s why I said bleep it Pitino.
I know we won’t and honestly I didn’t want him.
At this point he would have us top 25 by year 2. He would find guards and we have some bigs he could use.

If Pitino Jr. were a good coach i would say bring Rick and let him groom his son as his replacement.
His son isn’t good though.
We aren't going to hire Pitino but I am enthused that SUTOMCAT said that he thought Wildhack is looking to go big. We are, or we used to be Syracuse. I would like to be again. As you know, I am old. I don't have years to waste on rebuilding this thing. I have about 14 ncaa tournaments to go. Maybe a few more but I might not be me then. If it was my choice right now, I would tell jb this is it. Sadly,, in a former life, I had to let people go. The worst thing but necessary. And I would hire Pitino or someone else and try to fix this thing before it gets too late.

Corey Alexander obviously trolling us said he wants Boeheim to get to 50 years coaching.

I have an issue with having the record SU does and it takes 28 games to use a lineup that clearly was effective defensively and actually had some good cuts and passes to get some layups. Why wait 28 games when the record stinks? Coaches drop their egos to experiment at times and I just wish it didn’t take 28 games and a 30 point deficit to try something

I don't get most of you guys:

This team is limited, athletically.

Duke swished (not hit, swished) a huge percentage of threes whether guarded or not.

JB played his bench, his athletic guys (that have shown no skills) as much as you could possibly hope for.

it's all about recruiting fails. Maybe someone else does better. Maybe not.

The rest is just BS.
More than just recruiting fails, imo. It’s also about developing players and bench usage. If your inherent philosophy is to play “6 men and a cloud of dust” for 36 mins per game, then it doesn’t matter who you recruit.
We had 3 good players transfer out because they wouldn’t put up with JB’s crappy bench usage. Even if they’re not lighting it up where they went, all 3 likely would’ve thrived here at SU. But they sat…and watched…and heard the BS victim blaming, and decided to bolt. Can’t blame them for that.

My last thought is where is the game plan ? Every single game is treated the same other than the one where there was a major effort for the Jesse pick and roll. But why is every game the same exact thing? That’s not coaching. Not in the slightest

Same as last year with Jesse. Glued him to the bench until he absolutely had no other choice but to play him.

What don't you get? We haven't been ranked in the regular ACC season since 2014. That isn't acceptable to a lot of us. Its a combination of things. The recruiting misses aren't just a coincidence.

Let's suppose Coach Jones took over the program in 2014. With what we have done since 2014, would we have kept him? A final four and two sweet 16's. And multiple losses in every season. Does Coach Jones keep his job.

Hard to recruit at the customary SU level when the brand is damaged by 8 straight years of no top 25 and not getting any marquee TV games anymore. We're not the brand we were.

1.The only good thing that comes out of this game is Benny. First time this season he has shown some ability. I was stunned. So maybe there is a future for him.
2. I'm not optimistic about next season being any different than the last few. Might be worse. I believe if he has a losing season next year, JB will step aside. Losing isn't fun and he would know the program needs new energy.
3. As far as Mintz goes ... the large crowd and pre-game atmosphere was great. But once the game started and we got blown out the air came out and it's just a downer. How he relates to the staff and other players is more important to his decision making but the blow out downer doesn't help. And I still believe high level recruits are not keen on playing 100% zone. Years ago I don't think it was a big negative but I do now.

Hard but not impossible. That is what sales is all about. We still have a lot to sell. But, we need a Head Coach that is thinking recruiting when he wakes in the morning and when he falls asleep at night. Cal hits the road. And he is selling Kentucky.

probably...but on the hot seat

basically a rich mans Frank Martin

Sadly I had no confidence they were gonna win this game today when I woke up. I thought when K called into the radio show, JB should say go easy on me Saturday.

This game is another example of what should be a major wake up call for the program. Emabrassed at home on national tv, great look. This reminded me of those Miami teams running circles around coach P in football.

If I am JW I sit JB down in my office tomorrow and ask him, can you get competitive with Duke again or just competitive in the conference again, yes or no?

If yes, I would want a detailed plan, timeline. Budget, overhaul the staff, etc.

If no, I ask when do you plan to retire, or let him know you can do it at the end of the season so I can find a coach that is committed to a plan to get back elite.

And he's drunk on himself if he thinks he's making to 50 years if this continues.

It's a reasonable question. I think you factor in where coach Jones is in his career and what kind of recruiting classes he pulled in.

Coach Jones in your scenario is far less likely to keep his job than a HoFer who has a long history of success. Not to mention being who follows a HoFer.

There is a counter question which is if you don't fire CJ, how much longer does he get? What is the runway look like if he isn't bringing in good recruiting classes, isn't winning P5 non conference games regularly anymore and is at odds with the view of those who support the program as fans and alums?

In CJs case he could get fired(timing is debatable) In the HoFers case it's on him for awareness to register strong enough paired with the concerns raised about the program by the AD etc.

So to me - this year has to stick in terms of the list of things that isn't working. Next year has to be a return back to results. The class we bring in, portal included, needs to be good enough with the returnees to win and reclaim national relevance. If it does not happen, and we sit right where we currently are again, the dialogue from the AD has to be more forceful somehow.
