Postgame Thoughts… Wake Forest

ungood.

oh my god you used to kill me with that back in the day...
Yes .. and then the inbounds steal.. rinse repeat . Such a realistic game

Listen I can understand the “he’ll score more than he gives up argument” for Jimmy at the five. I don’t agree with it, but I can at least wrap my brain around it.

But how JAB, who historically plays offense / defense switches when he has the option, suddenly eschews the concept with :10 on the clock today….is absolutely maddening.

Let’s just fast forward to next year, when his judgment isn’t clouded.
He has screwed up the offense/defense switches all year

The crazy thing is with a couple of winning plays here and there, we could have (and maybe should have) notched two road victories this week.
And should have beaten uva

Honestly as a Fanbase I don’t know what we did to deserve this year and specifically the last two games. As for today a few thoughts.
-Buddy’s regression is mystifying. It wouldn’t be so bad if he were not playing selfish basketball and actually looking for open guys. Also he is a horrific defender who does not bother to go for loose balls. I mean he already has 5 to 10 air balls this year. How is that even possible?
-every game is the same with jg3. 2 to 4 Incomprehensible turnovers. He is a deadly shooter when open but it’s also plays selfish hero ball in inopportune times. The turnover that led to Jesse fouling out was totally inexcusable because it was borne out of an insipid, selfish play. Why is this not coached out of him? Why is he allowed to play like he is Steph Curry? Four unforced turnovers today.
-We all want Benny to get better and we are all rooting for him. But he just stands around on offense and does not look for the ball or cut to the basket. As a result it is like we are playing four on five on offense.
-I don’t care how many points Jimmy had today, he gave them all back on the defensive end. And that is his father‘s fault not his. He simply is not able to play the five at the ACC level. This guy should be a complementary player giving us 15 to 20 minutes off the bench. Instead he is playing more minutes then he did at Cornell. That is all we need to know. I think we win the game if Frank had been at the five after Jesse fouled out.
-I understand that people are angry about the non-foul call at the end of regulation. But the simple truth is the coaching was horrific. We could not get the ball inbounds. We had no plan and had four guys bunched together. And that has been a problem all year and nothing has changed and no adjustments have been made. Putting Jesse back in, the most foul prone guy on the team, with 9 minutes left was coaching malpractice.
-It sucks being a diehard fan for this team. It is almost irrational to route so hard for a program that doesn’t seem willing to help itself. But we will keep rooting for this team as we should but I can’t help already to start thinking about the roster for next year. but guess what? Two things will not change next season. First you need athletic players to win. Second you can’t play zone on every possession in the year 2022. The game has changed and every team has shooters who will make open shots which every zone will give up. I don’t understand why JB can’t accept that and adjust.

I mean there has to be a breaking point right?
I think this is it, I don’t think anyone has expectations that we’ll be over .500 on the year. Will there be more bouts of frustration, yeah, but we’ve seen more disappointment this season than probably the past 5 years combined.

Where to start…

Officiating was awful. That wasn’t off Buddy. BUT… just don’t inbound the ball there. What were Cole and Joe doing?

Edwards out was, unsurprisingly, huge. And Frank not coming in sooner after that is ridiculous. Awful coaching.

Hey… we won the first 5’ of the second half though.

Buddy wasn't bad. He was grinding. Joe had a pretty decent game. He didn't undressed trying to bring the ball upcourt for a change.

Jimmy redeemed himself after a couple really poor games.
They used the bench, and the bench contributed.

Too bad about Edwards fouling out. You want to cut down on silly fouls because there are sure to be a couple bad calls a game when you are a big man.

Wow, such calls. Not reversing the call where the ball obviously didn't go off Buddy, there was a goal tending against Jimmy that wasn't called. The replay as they were going to commercial showed that the ball had come off the backboard, but they never stopped for a check, and so the game went on.

Many chances to win. They were playing hard; they tipped some balls loose at the end that almost went their way that one more time.

Close, but not quite enough. That could have been a good win.

Coach lost this game for the team but will blame Jessie for fouling out.
He does need better situational awareness. I'm not sure when that's supposed to kick in. I get that he's a late comer to the game, but he's a junior.

Having said that, it's not like we lost a Carmelo Anthony talent while playing a Duke level team. The fact that we struggle against a mediocre team after we lose a mediocre player speaks volumes about our talent and depth.

I feel like we should have won all of them but Auburn.

The wins against the non tomato cans haven't been that convincing mind you.

I think we need a change. Even if you mess it up you can hire another coach in 2 years.

1. Symir needs to play 25 mpg! He's beginning to make Joe's passing better.

2. Buddy and Joe can make Plays. Jimmy and Cole can make plays. But Joe doesn't make Buddy better and Jimmy doesn't make Cole better. We're 15 games in, it's time to find a lineup that makes each other better.

3. Benny has Arrived!!!

On what planet we’re Joe and Buddy not bad? Are we talking about the wake game?

Benny was pretty good. He was a contributor today, and played some decent defense, got some rebounds. At one point he was only 2-6 from the field, so don't get too carried away. He still has a couple higher levels he could still reach this year.

I didn't think Frank played that bad, either. We could have collapsed when the Dutch Master fouled out, but we didn't. Jimmy played some defense inside, and then Frank and Benny helped out, too.

We hung in there right until the end, but I shared a sense of doom that I think many of you have right now, like I felt like we were going to lose this game.

I'm ready for 25 mpg with 1.Sy 2.Joe/Buddy 3.Benny/Frank 4.Jimmy/Cole 5.Edwards/Frank.
